Deep posterior margin is positive

I had a LX on 9/7/17. My path report came back that my tumor extended into the deep posterior margin. All other margins are negative. My BS said she went as far as my fascia and there is nothing else to take surgically so a MX or re-excision wouldn't help. She said this is somewhat of a rare case. I am concerned my RO won't radiate without clean margins but I don't really have any surgical options. I will be prescribed Tamoxifen but Chemo isn't necessary due to my tumor status. Has anyone been in this situation and had radiation? I see my RO next week.

    Hi Teach70

My situation is not exactly like yours but close enough I thought I would comment. I had a close posterior margin of 1mm. For DCIS the standard is 2mm. BS said it would not be possible to re-excise as it was to the fascia. This was reviewed by the hospital tumour board (group of bs, mo and ro's) for discussion and decision was to proceed to radiation. I had 16 treatments plus 5 boosts. I believe the boosts were due to the close margin. So far so good. Best wishes to you.

    TO,

Thank you for the reply. I hope that I am able to do the same. The waiting to find out is the hard part. Although, this entire process is a waiting/worry game

I had a mastectomy and was told I also have a positive deep margin.

I’m half way through chemo and will be needing radiation.

Did you end up getting chemo?

Has your deep margin changed your radiation plan
