hi there, I've had nipple removed due to Paget's, in October, am currently having 20 sessions of radiation, after living with no nipple for a while I realise I want to get nipple reconstruction, my breast is quiet square to the front I was wondering do they need to do more than just reconstruct a nipple, my DR hasn't mentioned reconstruction only tattoo, option has anyone been in same situation ? Or ebpven advise on the actual nipple reconstruction good or bad please?

I had nipple reconstruction surgery in November. I had a BMX where they were able to save one nipple, but found cancer in the nipple on the right side,so it had to be removed. The nipple on the non-cancer side bothered me post-BMX b/c it was too protrusive. Therefore, I wanted it to be toned down and also wanted to restore the nipple that had been removed. My surgeon did nipple sharing so that he took a small amount of tissue from the non-cancer nipple and transferred it to the side that had nipple removed. I actually have my final follow-up with surgeon later this week. I am very pleased with how the donor site appears; in my opinion, it is exactly as I had hoped. I think the side that was transferred to is OK; it is a bit small and nipples are not exactly in same location so I don't think it is perfect, but I suspect perfection is hard to achieve. In general, I am happy with it.

By the way, the surgery is very minor. It was done in the physician's office and only requires a local anisthetic. I was able to drive home afterwards.

I have had nipple reconstruction one was done in November 2015 and the other done August 2016 . I am very Pleased with both ,the Plastic Surgeon was able to match them up well. Both mine were done during other Surgeries and the Plastic Surgeon when you consult with him he will be able to tell you if you may need other work to round out the breast.

thanks girls for your replies sounds like it worked out very well for you both, I'm doing radiation at the moment half way through I'm seeing the breast dr I think in may, he told me he would sort out my breasts size wise but he's not a plastic surgeon I don't know if Irish health service would pay for nipple reconstruction I'm sure they wouldn't, however I do have health insurance, may not have good enough plan for that either but if all else fails I'll save up and pay myself I'll let you know how I go thanks

I had nipple reconstruction on a radiated breast. You may need to wait a year or so for the tissue to heal before doing the surgery or even the tattoo. I waited over a year and had antibiotics to prevent infection after surgery. I also had a flair of breast lymphedema that took about 6 months to settle.

My reconstruction looks good relative to the amount I had. My tumor was right beside the nipple, so I lost a lot of breast issue along with the nipple in surgery. I didn't request a fat transfer, so it is still flat and, if I lift my arm, concave there. The origami nipple disappears into the flatness. I would have been more successful with a fat transfer. The original tattoo was very dark, but is now faded to nearly the same color of my current nipple, 3.5 years later. My PS did the tattoo at the same time as surgery. I'd suggest getting a tattoo artist to do it instead. In the future I may have mine touched up.

The reconstruction, especially the tattooed areola, was really important to my mental well being. It helped to not see a blank breast in the mirror in the morning. Always an unwanted shock.

I posted here in January while I was having my radiation about nipple reconstruction, i went to the DR in May, and he said he will do either a fat graft or an implant to round out my breast as it's square and then make a nipple from my scar, and do a breast lift on the non cancer side.I was thrilled but now I'm thinking why would I slice into a healthy breast and have scarring on both breasts and will the non cancer one feel different after being lifted I assume I'll have an implant will I? I didn't ask any queastions because I was thrilled that the DR said he could do a nipple reconstruction and I wouldn't be left like this forever, now I'm thinking omg any advise on scarring and feeling in breast after recovery time I don't really mind about pain as I've a strong pain threshold but I don't want to have no sensation in my 2 breasts, having said that I'm 46 and I do want breasts that match, any advise good or bad greatly appreciated

Lorri, I had a lift on the left when I had my mx and recon on the right. There is very minimal scarring. mainly, there is a scar sort of outlining my nipple (as they actually move it when they lift) and then one running from nipple down the underside. I actually get keloid scars, but I didn't on that side and they aren't really noticeable. I lost no feeling, and they are in every way like "normal" (except 'perkier' right after the life). That was 14 years ago, so I can confidently tell you the lifted side has aged just like a normal breast. Please do ask if you've got other questions.

Thank you MTWoman, the operation is months away November I'm going to see the DR again I'd assume I'll get them done late November early December I'm really looking forward to looking normal again for myself my own head. I just was worried and wondering about it all how realistic is the nipple reconstruction does it actually look like a nipple

Sorry Lorri, I think maybe I got this thread mixed up with one on mastopexy

    SickTired

My PS constructed a nipple for me using cartilage from behind my ear and skin from my upper inner thigh. The initial idea was that I could get a tattoo to darken the created areola, but for whatever reason, the skin itself has remained darker than the surrounding skin and almost perfectly matches the other one. So no tattoo needed. It has sunk a bit over the years (14), but does still protrude. It looks pretty realistic.

Sleeping immediately after the surgery was my only issue, as I had difficulty laying on my back with my head on a pillow if it touched my ear, but couldn't lay on my right side (reconstructed side) or my left (left ear had cartilage harvested).

I opted for nipple reconstruction! Had my exchange surgery this past Friday. Posted pics on pic site. I'm still wearing what nurse called "nipple bolsters" over the nipple. Big reveal of these will be this coming Monday. PS used skin from hips to fashion fipples. Wish me luck!

I'm very upset today, haven't posted in a while, I had a follow up with the breast surgeon today, last saw him in May he said he would remould my breast create a nipple and lift the other side I was delighted but I should have known it was too good to be true. I went to see him today he spent ages looking at my breasts felt it was like making shapes obviously seeing what he could do he sat beside me so all angles were covered then I got dressed he was going on about moulding the shape said he'd sort out the breast then later would sort the other side, he said in the new year then he said I think you'd be better going to a plastic surgeon said he does nipple sparing mastectomies but not really nipple reconstruction he said cause he might make it worse I don't live in the (US) I live in Ireland so I came out of there with nothing I'm really upset cause I thought I was gonna be sorted by spring, I'm afraid I'm gonna be left like this, I don't kno why I'm posting here really maybe for some support cause no one really knows how I feel

Oh gosh Lorrie, I am surprised that he initially told you (if he isn't in fact a Plastic Surgeon PS) that he could do a nipple reconstruction! I am sorry that you find yourself feeling stuck, when you had been given a clear indication that you could be sorted by spring. I had a BS do much of my work (lx, mx, TI placement, exchange surgery) but did have a PS for the nipple recon and lift (for the other side). I'm not sure what else to tell you than I am so sorry!
