Hi!

Just scheduled prophylactic BMX due to BRCA2+ and DCIS twice in one year.

I had breast reduction surgery in 1992. And breast augmentation in 1997 and 2004. I’m used to scars and breast surgeries. Implants are under muscle and cause no issues.

Anyone have breast augmentation under the muscle years prior to mastectomy? If so, did this impact your reconstruction decisions?

Did it make anything easier in regards to recovery?

I’m hoping Somehow someway my prior surgeries will make a BMX with immediate swapping for new implants a lot easier.

Please someone tell me some good news. I need it.

I'm sorry you find yourself in this situation. I also had a reduction, followed years later by an augmentation, and years after that a bilateral mastectomy. The difference is that I had breast cancer so the radiation really screwed up the healing. Luckily that will not be an issue for you. The only thing I can say is that they will use your old scars, so you won't have new ones. The new implants will feel a little different because of the lack of breast tissue. And, being that you've been through breast surgery before, you know it's never an easy thing. That said, I think you'll be ok. I know quite a few women who have had prophylactic bmxdue to BRCA. They all seem to be ok with the results.

    Good luck.

Hello AlwaysSunnyInPA! The good news is that you're swapping for implants and that's easier than tissue transfer. I've had implants for many years as well and will be having a BMX. I'm looking into tissue transfer, though. I have learned that implants (that have been in for years) can cause a bit of a divot in your chest wall. So, that can impact the amount of tissue transferred or the CCs in your implants. I do wish I could just swap mine out for another set of implants, but I've had various health issue over the years and am convinced that my body just doesn't like them. Who will be doing your surgeries?

I just had a single MX, which removed a 20 year old implant that was below the muscle. The good news is that my PS told me that the capsule looked good, so capsular contraction is not a risk for me with new implants. So it sounds like that is one risk that can potentially be eliminated or mitigated for patients who have had augmentation prior to BC. One plus in this journey. My PS put a TE in just to hold the space until new implant.
