IDC + Hashimoto's thyroiditis
Hi ladies! I am new here, first time posting! I am 30 yo and was diagnosed a couple months ago IDC stage 2B. Does any of you also have Hashimoto's thyroiditis and take levothyroxin every day? Do you know if there is any conection with breast cancer? I am going trough chemo (AC) now and I am being very blessed. So many weird stuff happens with my body but they have been mild. I got my new wig today, I am so happy!!
thank you!

I was diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism, Graves Disease, and Hashimotos in 1990. My thyroid was treated with radioactive iodine (and I became hypo) and I have been taking Synthroid ever since.
I was diagnosed with BC in 2016. I don't *think* there is a connection.
Welcome to the club (that no one wants to join). I admire your positive outlook!

Hashimotos is very common, especially in women, and when it burns out into thyroid underfunction, you get thyroid supplements to maintain normal function ( TSH 1-2 in most). Endocrinologists who see a new Hashi patient do not immediately refer for breast cancer screening because there is no known association. Both are just common in women.
There is, however, an association with autoimmune low b12 and other autoimmune problems, including rheumatoid arthritis, and celiac disease, so at least check the b12, is easy to supplement, and if you have arthritic or GI symptoms that could be managed.

Hi Carolina, and welcome to Breastcancer.org!
In addition to the helpful posts you've received here, you may wish to join the Breast Cancer With Another Diagnosis or Comorbidity forum -- specifically, the Anyone dealing with hashimoto's? thread and the BC & Autoimmune Diseases: How many? What does the research say? thread.
We hope this helps and we look forward to hearing more from you soon!

I too had Grave's back in the early 2000s. I have Hashimoto now. Both run on my mother's side of the family. I'm the only BC diagnosed person on that side of the family and there are a lot of relatives (she has 8 sisters and two brothers). They all have kids and there kids have kids. Seems BC was a fluke for me.

Thank you girls!!

I have had Hashimotos for a little over 30 years. Your thyroid levels will change a lot while they are trying to regulate your meds.
Find a good endo. one that listens to you and not your lab work. There is a normal range for labs but most patients feel better with their TSH in the lower range of those levels.
The most Synthroid I have been on was 200 mcg right now I am on 150mcg. My Hashis came first and the breast cancer for me just happened.

After chemo, I have continued fatigue as well as hand and foot neuropathy. My GP tested me for B12. Said I was too low so now I have monthly b12 injections for the rest of my life. Who knows if I was always low in B12 then cancer or cancer then low B12........wishing you wellness!

Hi Carolina1987. I have hypothyroidism, fibromyalgia, nerve damage and arthritis. I was just diagnosed with multifocal invasive ductal carcinoma. My doctors say there is no corolation but I have read that women who have breast cancer have a 50% higher probability of developing thyroid cancer. Good luck! I am still debating lumpectomy or mastectomy. Very stressful. I am er/pr + her2 - and will be put on hormone meds for 5 yrs.

I've been hypothyroid for several years (I'm 71 now). Thinking back, my TSH rose significantly right before I was diagnosed with bc and they doubled my dose of Levothyroxine. Does make you wonder about the connection. I've also wondered about the HRT they put us all on when we went through menopause. I remember them telling me "It'll make you feel younger". Then when diagnosed, they tell you your cancer is fed by estrogen! If I only knew then what I know now!
