Did you get a 2nd opinion on path from biopsy?

Hello everyone,

I had a 1.4 cm area that showed up on my digital mammogram. Was sent for stereotactical core needle biopsy. The path report was 4/7 positive for DCIS , grade nuclear 3, hormone negative 0%, no evidence of invasion.

Is it possible for it remain as DCIS (not invasive) if it's grade 3 and 1.4 cm? I'm worried that invasion was missed. I'm going all out with double mastectomy (to avoid radiation and also get every bit of benefit for it not to return).

Should I request a 2nd opinion on the slide? If so, how do I go about that?

Thanks for your help.

    Hi ps075 -

Your DCIS can remain non -invasive....after your BMX the patholoogy slides will actually tell you the final of the final pathology report and dictate your continued treatment - if any....you can always have a second opinion done. Your biopsy is typically an initial analysis that starts the ball rolling to get an idea of what other tests are needed, and what treatments are options at this point. Your biopsy sample would have to be sent to whomever you chose, and after your double BMX your slides would need to be sent to wherever you choose.....typically you find who/where you want the second opinion done, and either go pick up slides and send or have the path dept handle it, and get the slides returned as well. Hopefully that helps and I hope I understood what you were asking....if you have an invasive component somewhere on your DCIS it would have to be measured and it actually could have a different profile vs your DCIS. Then the invasive component would be staged and future treatment decided based on what they find.
