Wire excision removal for benign fibroadenoma

I met with the breast surgeon regarding a fibroadenoma I've had for the past 2 years that appeared to be getting larger - I am 44 years old and this was just discovered a few years ago. I've been very active in my mammograms and had my first baseline at age 34. She is wanting to do wire excision removal to the tumor itself and all surrounding solid/fluid mixed breast cysts.

Ive had 2 previous benign biopsies before and am unsure if it's really necessary at this point to have the removal. The surgeon is recommending it but said it's my choice. My BIRAD rating was only a 4 and I've read that only 30% will come back malignant. If I was scored BIRAD 5 or higher, I'd really have no reservation proceeding with this procedure. I'm trying to avoid any unnecessary procedures at this point. I didn't want to "watch and wait" originally but the more I research this procedure and read about statistics, the more I feel I should just wait it out.

Any input, comments are greatly appreciated.

Hugs to all - Deb

Hey deb, do you have a few threads running right now? I think your other ones are getting responses and it is difficult when different people are asking the same questions or are not benefitting from information uncovered on a different thread. Also, if someone in the future starts to read one of your threads, but you've lost track and not kept them all up to date, it is frustrating for newbies not to read any resolution. Just food for thought.

    Hi MTwoman,

Yes I had another thread running that I'm trying to actively keep updated; however, I just started this new one as this is the latest doctors findings/recommendations and I wasn't sure how to incorporate that into the original thread. I know sometimes threads get lost out there and I wasn't sure which topic I should even start to inquire on this matter. This is all so new and I have so many questions/doubts.

Thank you for your input. I appreciate it :)

Are you getting your questions answered? What I've found is that once folks start to answer questions on one thread, they'll stick with it as they've marked it in their "favorite topics" and get notified when anyone adds to the topic. I do want to make sure that you benefit from as many wise and wonderful bc warriors as possible!

Yes MTwoman. Thank you so much. I know no one can really answer my million dollar question regarding the true need for a wire excision removal being absolutely necessary or not due to my above concerns; but otherwise, everyone has been very supportive and I'm still confused on what to do. LOL

Just had my wire excision yesterday and I'm so glad it's over. Not the best experience (details in my other post - “first me now my 25 year old) but I'm glad to say my doc called to reveal my pathology report: proliferative changes without atypia but with my family history and previous history with me for endometrial polyp removal she is settting me up for BRCA testing. She explained although this is not cancer, this type of pathology puts you at a higher risk for diagnosis. If tested positive she will place me on medicinal therapy (tamoxifen, evista, etc) if negative I'm hoping to jump off this roller coaster once and for all!

I pray for all that are going through real life changing events.

Surgery this past Thursday afternoon and still sore.Wondering if most women also experienced this or is it just me - I have very dense breast tissue - I don't know if that makes a difference.

    Thanks for your input.
