Steroids are making me crazy

Options

I’m hoping for any advice on sleeping while on steroids, but most of the steroid info is on the chemo boards so may not be applicable to my situation. I am on a 60 day supply to treat my radiation pneumonitis, less than 2 weeks in, 50 mg a day of prednisone at the moment. Apparently rads fried my lung because I’m thin, and I need to be on this just to breathe normally right now. I don’t take sleeping pills or anything, I’m not sure I would. Does this get better as I drop the dose or worse the longer I’m on? I’ve got a toddler, so I need to function

I'd discuss with your MO. Unfortunately, my experience was not that it got better over time. That said, I was taking for a different reason (to avoid nausea during chemo). My MO was willing to halve the dose but was worried that nausea would return if he did. I ended up using very small amounts of marijuana (so small that I never felt high, it just helped me sleep) instead and that did the trick for me. Seems like a small amount of a sleeping pill might do the same. Or perhaps Melatonin?

Talk to your doc, and hopefully someone here has an experience closer to yours and can chime in.

Hugs to you; steroids really are the pits, even though they do help in so many ways.

octogirl, thanks for the idea! I would’ve never thought of that. Smoking is out of the question, but I could get some treats made if needed. I will also talk to my MO.
