I had my biopsy this week and the Dr.s office called me late tonight.

I have Invasive Ductal Carcinoma with the Nottingham Histologic Grade 2.

The hormone test are not back yet and I should get an appt set up with an oncologist on Monday. How much longer does the hormone test usually take?

What should I expect to happen next more testing?

Thanks.

generally speaking, the hormone receptor tests require a few additional days. If you received your biopsy results today, I'm sure you'll get the hormones back middle of next week. As for tests, there may potentially be a CT scan, Pet scan and/or MRI

Have you decided on a breast surgeon yet?

Remember.. take one day at a time. Make sure you're 💯 on which docs you choose, as they are now with you for quite some time. Listen to them. Come back here for advice... we would love to lend a helping hand.

Primary care told me I needed to see an oncologist first but maybe she was mistaken. I have no idea what I am doing or where to start first.

I can work with a nurse navigator that will gladly help me get appointments with the right places and in the right order.

At this point more testing would be a great idea but I am not one who can do a MRI and I am not claustrophobic normally but that test sort of freaks me out. I am sure the open or standing ones are not as accurate.

Thank you for taking the time to reply.

    Hi stexas:

I received my diagnosis 8 days after my biopsy, and the biomarkers report another 7 days after that. However, I live in northern Alberta and my biomarkers had to be sent to the nearest large city (Edmonton) for testing. I also noticed that the date stamped on my biomarkers report was almost a full week before I got the call from my GP's office telling me the results were in!

Did your report give you any kind of information regarding tumour size? That might be one reason they want you to see an oncologist first. Because of my staging, I was sent straight to the breast surgeon.

The tumor size on mine is 1.3 cm posterior right hand side at 9:00. I know they have to stage our cancer before we can have a treatment plan so I am assuming a surgeon would be first for that. My plan is to go to MD. Anderson in Houston they are one of the best and that is where I want to go I do have to check our insurance but I almost bet they take all insurance. Thank you for the information.

gosh , sorry for your diagnosis. Take care of yourself while you're going through all your appointments and setting up your treatment plans.  I agree, I found out my hormone status about 3 days later and I too was told over the phone.  As to doctor order... I saw an oncologist first ( I got 3 opinions), and I saw 3 breast surgeons (3 opinions). I was able to fit those all in within a month times. All were covered by my insurance company and they require second opinions so was glad for that. I was happy I saw the oncologist first as they set the stage for long term , post operative follow-up. They filled in a lot of blanks. The surgeon is just that, a surgeon. But you need a good one and a Breast surgeon who handles cancer patients every day. Since you're going to MDA you'll be in good hands.  On this site there is a list of questions to ask your doctor. Print those out, get a notebook and take notes.  Best advice I was given was to bring someone with me to my appointments. Its amazing what we don't hear and don't remember when we 're stressed. Its good to have another person there to help.  I'd also suggest getting copies of all reports, radiologist reports and copies of the scans.  Its good to have your own copies.  Good luck with everything, and keep us posted.

I have been printing out the reports from the patient portal. The biopsy is not on there for some reason maybe because they are still doing the second part of it. I have a new Samsung Notebook I bought just for this and even downloaded the Cancer Coach App. I checked the memo portion of the tablet and it records so if the Dr.'s do not mind I can record what they are saying which should help me remember. Thanks for the information I am sure it is all over whelming.

Hey there Miss Texas, it's Georgia again. So sorry about your diagnosis and the waiting for results! It can be the worst part. On the other hand, MD Anderson is terrific and their breast cancer center even lets you start the appointment process online. Link below.

Personally I started by making appointments with two surgeons so I could get a second opinion. Then I saw an RO pre-surgery to be sure I understood everything. But the patient navigator at MDA will help you sort it out I'm sure and seeing either the surgeon or the RO first should be fine. I was actually in touch with Dr. Ben Smith, an amazing RO who is running a clinical trial there, and can highly recommend him. Seems like you are well-prepared but let us know how we can help please.

I am going to wait and talk to the nurse navigator who said she could help me tomorrow. Hopefully she knows what appt I will need first. Maybe I can get both the same time lol. Thanks Georgia1.
