Biopsy - breastfeeding and driving questions

(not at the same time, of course!)

I'm going in for a needle biopsy tomorrow. That's all the info I have about that. I'm 37 with a palpable mass that ultrasound showed to be 2.4cm, well delineated. Left breast, close to the bottom/chest. Some microcalcifications

I'm wondering about how I can expect to feel after the biopsy. Do I need someone to drive me home (1 hour drive) or will it just be a little sore, but something I can live with? The first clinic said I needed someone, the second said no (long story there involving a transfer of clinics).

Secondly, I am still breastfeeding my 9 month old. Anything I should be aware of regarding biopsy and breastfeeding? Neither clinics had any info on that for me. I will have bf about 2 hours prior to the procedure and I might bring a pump to empty my breast some more if need be.

Surgeon and radiologist were both fairly confident it is a lactation adénome but they want to make sure it is not a neoplasia lesion since it grew quite quickly in 2 months (from what I can understand and translate on the French report). Bi-rads 4b.

Thanks in advance if anyone has any insights to share!

I was numb locally after the biopsy, just felt some pressure afterward, but no pain. I had a small flat ice pack about the size of my palm I could place in my bra for 20 mins out of each hour. I went to the procedure directly from work, and had no problem driving myself home - approximately 30 minutes. I worked the next day with no issues - physical job in the hospital, just brought the little ice pack and kept it in the freezer for use. I believe I took Tylenol that evening and next day, but really didn't need it. Sorry, I have no info regarding the breastfeeding other than I am so sorry you are dealing with this issue while you are doing so - you should be enjoying your baby and not having to worry about this. Good luck and wishing you the best!

Agreed, no issues driving. I had 3 biopsies across my chest and drove 8 hours home. :) Just stoped and got ice along the way as needed. Was sore for sure, but wasn't an issue to drive.

As for breast feeding....I know they used Lanicane for pain. I would do some research specifically on that related to breast feeding and see if anything comes up. Its the same pain med they give you when you get a filling from the dentist. (Unless your location uses something different ofcourse.) I wouldn't think its too big of a deal if they don't know to begin with.

Good luck, hoping all goes well.

The center that does mine makes it a point to specifically tell me that I will be fine to drive home. I stopped and bought groceries on the way home after my last one.

simplysmj, depending on how close to your nipple the procedure is, your tolerance for discomfort/pain and how aggressive an eater you have on your hands, you may not want to breast feed until a few days after your biopsy. Some women experience little to no pain (I was one, returned straight back to work), but others are quite sore afterwards.

Oh MTWoman makes a good point. I didn't think about the actual nursing part. :) Ya...I'm not sure I would have been up for that. Would have been gritting my teeth through it probebly.
