Hi all. I am scheduled for surgery (single mastectomy) on Dec 7 out of state. After release from the hospital we will be driving the 7.5 hrs home and then back 10 days later for follow-up. I have to admit this makes me nervous, so I thought I would reach out and see if others have done the same thing and have any tips for the journey?

Is the hospital keeping you at least overnight or 23 hours? When I had my single mastectomy (UMX) I was out of state, but it was only 2 hours away. They kept me overnight because of the travel when usually, it would have been out patient. I don't see you will have any issues after the 10 day followup, but I am concerned about the 7.5 hour drive right after surgery for you. Any possibility you could spend the night in a motel close to hospital for another night? Make sure you take ALOT ALOT of pillows to prop yourself up in the back seat and take your pain meds! Do not get behind on them those first few days.

I have to have my other breast removed because of genetics next Spring, so this stuff is fresh on my mind once again.

    Sending hope and prayers!

I traveled after surgery (was done outpatient, spent the first night at my sister's house and then she drove me). I used several pillows to be comfortable. The bumps in the road (literally) were extremely uncomfortable. We only drove 4+ hours, and I was very ready to get out of the car. 7 hours would have been difficult for me, but maybe in the back seat?

They will be keeping me overnight but we have decided to stay a day or two in a hotel to recover a bit before we hit the road. I have a wedge and the motel gave us some extra pillows. I hope that is enough to keep me comfortable and let me sleep.
