My surgeon says I have small abdominal  blood vessels as shown on the scan.  If this is the case when he operates he will have to use some muscle for the flap as this will have better blood vessels.

I am terrified of losing my core strength as I have lost a lot of weight to have this reconstruction and am now fitter than I have been in a long time.  I want to be able to canoe and horse ride and trek and swim.

Can anyone advise me please?

hi jilly- who is your surgeon? Have you considered a 2nd opinion? Or considered SGAP instead of DIEP? I fully agree on not wanting to lose core strength. That’s why I ask.

I had SGAP with BMX. Apparently my blood vessels were small and vessel grafting was done. One breast had necrosis due to restricted blood flow and eventually shrink from a DD to a B cup over the next 2.5 years. I had a DIEP to replace the failed breast and no complications. Apparently blood vessels in the hips are smaller than in the belly, so the rate of complications is slightly higher for SGAP. I would be cautious about small vessels.
