Starting Radiation November 2017

I had my 2nd rads tx yesterday after the bolus mapping so I was on the table for about 20 minutes. The treatment part went better, and I realized you're not holding your breath for that long. It was only a couple of seconds, maybe 5 at the most. But I swear the 1st day it felt like forever. LOL After 2 days, I'm feeling some tightness around the edges of the tissue expander.
I'll ask my RO on Monday about what the bolus is for and if there's any side effects to my skin and/or tissue expander.
-
Hope all goes well, sunny jay
-
sunnyjay--- I am getting bolus, too. My RO explained that typically rads pass thru the skin and treat the stuff under the skin. But in my case, they want to make sure to treat my skin to kill any cancer cells that could be lurking in my skin so the bolus is placed on top my skin, the rads pass thru the bolus like it was my skin and then impacts my skin directly.. increasing skin dosage
-
I’ve had 5 of my 21 scheduled treatments so far. I started noticing some tenderness on the skin around the right nipple after the 3rd one. That seems really too soon, to me. Anyone else noticing side effects so early? I naturally have very sensitive, reactive skin, so I have been worried that it might end up pretty bad by the end of the 4 weeks.
Also, they aren’t asking me to hold my breath for any of the sessions. Is that odd?
-
AngelaJL, someone explained to me that holding breath is usually for the left breast, to help protect the heart. The suggestion was not to hold your breath unless they tell you to. Good luck with your RADS. I don't start until Nov. 20th.
-
Ah, that makes sense. Thanks Nancy!
-
I’m lurking again, not sure I can able to join you gals or I might have to join the December thread.
-
Holding your breath may also have to do with what type of radiation machine you are using. I am having my left breast done, but don't need to hold my breath.
As far as lotions/creams, I use Eucerin after I take my shower in the morning. My treatments are first thing in the morning at 8:00am. At first I was really sad about that availability. I had hoped I could have the late afternoon. I started treatments Oct. 17th. I haven't felt fatigue until this Friday. I chalked it up to major carb crash. I usually have protein only in the morning. Friday I had a day off and had a pancake breakfast. After I finished I had never felt so tired in my life. I just went straight to bed and slept for 4 hours. No more carbs for me in the morning. I will see if this makes the difference on Monday.
As far as lymphademia, I do have some swelling which my Lymph specialist said is expected. I see her once a week to help get things circulating. She gave me this stuff called Hawaiian Moon Aloe she got at one of her conferences. OMG, feels incredible cooling on my skin!!! Will use immediately after treatment to cool the skin.
Hoping well wishes for all!

Happy Sunday, All! Enjoy your day of rest (from rads treatments!)
Angela, holding your breath is to protect the heart so that technique is used when treating the left breast. As Shellsatthebeach said, it all depends on the rads machine that is used. My cancer was in the left breast and I don't hold my breath because the machine that is used on me makes other accommodations.
Shellsatthebeach, thanks for the carbs tip. I slept awesome last night (10 hours.) DH brought bagels home for breakfast--hadn't had one for eons--so I indulged. Oh my goodness! I am sooooo tired--(it is only 10:50 AM!) Definitely not doing that again!
Intgragirl--I re-read your earlier post about feeling like a cancer patient again and not liking it....I hope a week or so has put you in a better place. I know what we are going through is the same yet different...and it all is for crap...but I hope a weeks' closer to the finish line has made you rally a bit and know that soon this will all be just a memory. I mean, think about all you have all ready endured--it is over, done with...and so will rads!
Brightness 4 (and anyone that is having the shortened treatment)... I am so jealous!
I was prescribed 28 whole breast treatments and 6 boosts. I have completed 15..so I would almost be done if I were on the abbreviated plan. Alas...I have to trust my RO...But the good news is I have had very mild SE--just the hint of pink and some tingling here and there...and this ridiculous exhausted feeling (that I blame on the bagel so that is easy to fix!) So, chin up! 15 down--19 (good Lord!) more to go!
-
Sheilasattgebeach, thanks for that tip about carbs in the morning. Now I'll be better prepared.
Linwentz, we made a trip across to N Dakotayesterday and I found Aquaphor. So pleased to get it. I plan to use everything I can, and love the green tea ad cabbage ideas. Now - just to find Calendula oil. Eight more days to the start of RADS. I've been told my course will be a mix of morning and afternoon appointments. MRI totally clear. I am set to go.
-
I just put on my afternoon smear of Miaderm & my oh my, do I have a silky smooth boob! And I am pleased to announce looks very much like its rad-less sister! This might not keep up ( I still have 19-gulp- more treatments to go) but so far so good!
53Nancy, Aquaphor is a bit of a greasy mess. I use it liberally at bedtime only. Make sure to wear an old t-shirt or cami - and then your pj top. Hard to say for sure, but I think it really helps. I found Calendula cream (not oil) on Amazon. I think that helps, too. I alternate between the Calendula and Miaderm creams. I haven't even used the Emu oil yet ( and might not!) Feeling positive
-
Just want to double check is this is the Miaderm cream everyone are using?
-
Linwentz... glad to hear your boob is on a good rad jpurney:) My order of Miaderm should be here this week. My simulation is this Thurs; rads to start the 27th. I plan on smoothing my boob in advance so that it helps. My RO said could lotion the day of rads, just do it 2hrs before. I have 20 sessions so I too hope that mine go well! Question, how often do you lotion and do you keep any of yours in the fridge?
PauletteK, yes that's what I ordered.
-
Thanks lifechoices
-
PauletteK you are welcome. Funny thing, I ordered the 4tube pk because I wanted to start lotioning before my sessions. When I had my consult last week, the Dr says ...dont buy anything we'll supply Miaderm... oh well, at least I have mine anyway. Looks like we'll be rad buddies...so praying our boobs will have a smooth journey.
-
Lifechoices I just ordered one for now, I don’t think I would start rad till end of this month or December but I wouldn’t mind to prepare a little early.
-
PauletteK yeah, I'll be starting Nov 27th. But same here wanted to be prepared. We Got This... before you know it, we'll be all done!
When my rads are done Dec 22nd) I start Tamoxifen...
-
Linwentz, thanks for the advice about Aquaphor. I think I can find Calendula on Amazon.ca and Well.ca, but haven't found Miaderm yet. I will also use gel from my aloe Vera plants. I am hoping everyone gets through rads without serious problems. I am anxious to get started on the 20th so that I can get finished! Good luck everyone.
Ouch! Misdem is $121.00 for a 4 oz tube on Amazon.ca
-
I was told not to apply lotion until after treatment--which is at 10:40. I then apply a liberal dose of either Miaderm or Calendula cream right after treatment , then again sometime mid after noon and lastly at bedtime (a big slathering of Aquaphor. I also do the green tea thing before each application of the cream. So mostly I apply cream 3x a day. I am not sure whether what I am doing is working or this is just how my body reacts to rads. Either way, so far so good!
-
Yes, that's what was recommended to me.
-
53nancy... I paid $128 for the 4 tubes... they came in a 4pk
Georgia1 and Linwentz, so you dont lotion at all prior to your rads? Did you lotion the week before?
-
1st week and 5/16 down. I am very happy it's a long weekend. My brain really needed a break. It's been pretty nice in Calgary so have been able to spend a lot of time outside walking my dogs the past few days. The fresh air and sun (and lack of hospitals) has done wonders for my mood. I had a great tech Thurs and Fri: very on the ball, get me in and out with minimal fuss. Plus, he scoured the area for butterfly stickers for me to take home on Friday because I don't have tattoos and just inked marks covered by stickers
.
The other tech earlier In the week was a trial. She was running 30 minutes late every day and took freaking forever which added to my overall stabby feeling
. She also delayed between her "hold your breath" and hitting the go button. We had a chat about that routine on Wednesday....maybe that's why I have a new tech
.
Thank you so much for your supportive words. Greatly appreciated. I have friends who want to get together with me but I really just want to tuck in by myself until this crap is over. I don't have the energy to try to explain what this is like to anyone. I feel like an ungrateful asshole because my friends are wonderful and have been there for me all year but I just have nothing to give anyone right now.
-
I started 25 treatments on November 6th, had number six today. So far so good. Lots of fatigue, but that might be leftover from chemo.
-
Can anyone tell me how bad and how quickly fatigue becomes an issue? I have my first treatment (of 16) in a few hours and completely forgot that I committed to driving a friend to the airport (which will take several hours) later this week a few hours after treatment. Apparently fatigue will hit just about the time we’re heading out.
-
Good morning All! Happy 😊 Monday and the start of a fresh rads week. Hope all goes smoothly for everyone.
Brightness 456-- like everything in this journey, SE are individual. For me, I have not confronted fatigue yet (except for the morning I had a big ole' bagel for breakfast!) I am 15/34 and far so good. Hopefully you will be fine during your long drive...safe travels!
Lifechoices-- My RO said nothing about applying creams prior to starting rads so I didn't. I hadn't done a lot of radsresearch so I didn't even know others were doing it. My treatment is at 10:40 so it makes sense not to apply cream before treatment (plus my RO said not to) I am pretty much of a rule follower... so whatever my docs recommend, that is what I do. I do, however ask tons of questions and feel them out if there is something I want to do.
Integragirl-- don't feel guilty about how you are feeling. I think it is very normal to have a jumble of emotions as we navigate this difficult and very personal journey. I find it easier to rant here--on this site-- or in my journal then talk to dear and caring friends. I can't tell you how many phone calls or texts have gone unanswered. I do need to be careful no to push them too far away, though. Rads is my last hurdle--( not counting the every 6 months check) and soon I can return to some semblance of normalcy. Hopefully, that is where you are, too
-
Linwentz; thanks for your reply. I guess Im trying to dodge the SEs as much as I can. But as previously posted everyones SEs are not the same. I won't know my schedule until my simulation this Thursday so I guess that too will determine when or how often Im using it. As for the week before, I may just start just to make sure my boob is 'soft' and smooth. lol... I drink plenty of water on a regular now but will add more veggies to my food intake. I also take vitamins daily so hopefully with all of that and prayerfully staying healthy that will play a part as well for the better.
Integragirl; Linwentz is correct, you have every right to feel however you want. MOST days Im 100% 'winning', but some days I get that thought in my head like really, is this my life. But then Im reminded one day at a time...and before you know it as Linwentz stated; normalcy will soon follow.
I too have a journal. Some days my writing is all peaches and cream; other days i write in CAPS as if im screaming my words on paper. But it helps. Noone can know your true thoughts but you and although my support team are like the BEST EVER still some days I can't even relay to them how i really feel.
Linwentz, this too is my last lap (rads); and then on to tamox.
-
Lineentz, I was interested in your comment about you’re a breakfast bagel and had read somewhere else that eating curves at breakfast
-
Radiation is my last major treatment in what has felt like an unending gong show this year. I'm on Xeloda until April but that is fairly stress free so far.
Brightness, I finished 5/16 on Friday and so far (knock on wood), no real SEs. I was tired but I chalked that up to being very stressed out last week and not sleeping well. I've felt pretty good all weekend and even did two closet "fall purges" yesterday. I hate that chore so must have been feeling pretty good to tackle it
-
Good morning, everyone. I hope that your day is going well. I had a question re: having carbs at breakfast time adding to fatigue. What suggestions would there be for avoiding carbs at breakfast? I don't think I could eat eggs every day.
I love to do smoothies with fruits and veggies, and protein powder added in with ground flax, chia and wheat germ. Would this count as carbs? What do YOU eat for breakfast. My first appointment, next Monday, is 10:15, but I've been told my course will be a mix of morning and afternoon appointments, so it kind of leaves us up in the air for planning, but hopefully I will get a schedule my first time in.
-
Lifechoices--I am with you-- I want to do all I can do to help my journey be as smooth & pain-free as possible... I guess that's the control freak in me. So besides all the creams and lotions, I drink 64oz of water daily (prior to diagnosis, water was only for baths!) try to eat only Whole Foods, have greatly reduced coffee& diet soda, exercise at least 30 min daily ( my favorite is just put on my favorite dance music and go to it!) and have taken advantage of the free Reikki sessions offered at my cancer center. I am also going to explore acupuncture and yoga as well as homeopathic supplements. I do not want a re-occurrence so these will need to be lifestyle changes forever.
