I had tumor and node removal on Oct 17, 17. I also had a reduction and lift done at the same time. I was told blood flow being bad is why I am not healing. I have a triangular wound on both breasts. The worst is being treated with a wound vac and the other with wet to dry gauze changes. I am 51 yrs old. A plastic surgeon did my surgery. I am so upset with this. I just didn't expect this. The smaller wound is now growing larger. Any suggestions or what I should ask my doctor because he isn't telling me a lot.

I'm so sorry you are having to deal with that. I had a reduction done when I had my lumpectomy and I had no open wounds. Did they use stitches or glue? I had a purple glue all overand it held extremely well. I had a couple days of a little seeping but that is it. Most of my discomfort was from my sentinel node biopsy. I hope they can get you healed quickly.

You have my sympathy. My PS butchered me. Not only did my one-step reconstruction NOT look anything like boobs, about half of the right died, while the left ended up with a 6-inch seroma. I wore a wound vac on the rt for 7-8 weeks, followed by an additional 8-9 weeks of wet-to-dry dressing.  The seroma pocket had to be packed with iodoform gauze for 16 weeks until it finally healed.  My scars looked horrible for a while there, but now they have faded. Unfortunately, I lost all the recon and I look like a pot-bellied old man.

On the bright side, I contacted the doctors at NOLA (Center for Reconstructive Breast Surgery) and they are positive they can fix this mess. I have fired my PS and I'm trying to figure out when I want to have the reconstruction done. Of course, I'd love to have it done NOW, but it's looking more like sometime in the winter or next fall. We shall see. I know one thing--I am sick of looking like this!

I had stitches. We tried a wound vac last Friday and I went to take it off Sunday night and could not get the whole thing off. My mother had to help me out of the shower, dress me and we went to ER. The ER nurse said she has never seen a wound vac sponge stick like this one was. Delotid didn't do much for pain. I squealed like a stuck pig while they got it off. So, this coming Wed. I have an appointment at a wound center. Hopefully they will be able to help me.

You might see if you can get hyperbaric chamber treatment to accelerate your wound healing, particularly in light of the wound vac situation. I would also discuss some supplementation with bromelaine and zinc, possibly arnica - all are potentially beneficial for healing. Also, try to ingest 100g of protein daily - it is a lot, but it helps your body heal itself. Red meat, chicken, pork, fish, eggs, cheese, Greek yogurt, nuts, fortified cereal are all good sources, as is protein powder added to smoothies. Good luck!

Thank you for the supplement info. I am all for holistic or homeopathic strategies for anything medical. I am having a hard time with the protein thing. I am a grain, sugar, bread, etc junkie. Gotta get my mind set and do what is needed. Thanks so much for the information.

Slam some protein drinks. Most of them are nasty and chalky, but they get the job done. The carbs make the bacteria fat and sassy, so do try to limit them if you can.

I second the suggestion for arnica. I used Arnica Montana 30c, 5 pills 3 times a day. I bought these from Whole Foods but they can be bought online as well.

I had oncoplastic surgery - a lumpectomy and a reduction on the other side. Arnica was recommended by my plastic surgeon. I started use prior to surgery and continued for a few weeks after. It definitely helped healing. My bruises were gone in a few days and drains were out in 3 days. I did have a small area on the side that had the lumpectomy that looked like the wound would reopen. They suggested a kind of gauze bandage that kept moisture wicked away so that the wound could heal faster. You could ask about that. I bought the gauze pads from walmart.

I also used Arnica through my radiation treatment and it helped a lot.

Another recommendation is acupuncture. I started going to acupuncture prior to surgery and continued to go through chemo and radiation. Definitely helped heal and manage side effects.

I wish you all the best!

    Tereslg,

I had the same problem you are having. I was healing well, then those darn triangle openings happened. My PS said it was very common. My chemo was delayed, MO said it might end up being too late for chemo by the time they healed. I had some sleepless nights and spent hours looking online for suggestions. I ended up taking Juven supplements twice a day, just in case. It's expensive, and I don't really know that it helped. I was eating plenty of protein and vegetables at the time, so the supplement was probably unnecessary. One thing that seemed to make a huge difference for me was to stop taking the prescription NSAID I was taking daily for arthritis pain. I found an article online that said that surgical wounds in the late healing stage need inflammation. The NSAID was blocking inflammation and slowing the healing. When I stopped the piroxicam I started seeing healing withing 24 hours. It was amazing how fast the wounds closed then, I was taking pictures and could see a difference every 12 hours. My PS and MO both thought it was just a coincidence, but wanted to mention it in case it might applies to you. I hope you heal soon!

I know but danged I love my carbs. So, I have been eating a lot of jerky, nuts and things of that sort. I hope that you are doing well now and thank you for your reply to my post. I am hoping we can all help each other out in some way.

    Teresig,

I find it disconcerting that it was blamed on blood supply without a cause identified, and even more so that your surgeon does not communicate well in the face of a complication. Smoking, poorly controlled diabetes, morbid obesity (not just being overweight) or a vasculopathy can indeed contribute to poor wound healing. But those factors should be identified and addressed as part of your consent to surgery

Plus smokers and patients with diabetes etc have surgery everyday and most of their wounds heal.

    SpecialK suggestions are excellent.

My only other thought is - have you thought about or are you in a position to seek a second opinion?

    😊🌷

    Reikion,

Thanks for the information. I am going to check on the Arnica Montana for sure. I started the wound clinic last Wednesday. They put iodosorb on with a kind of pad with a foam cover and taped down. It is annoying in that the pad sort of dissolves and then becomes wet. Right now the smell of it is driving me crazy but I cannot remove it. I cannot shower either. Sink baths but I decided to shower from waist down and dry shampoo my hair part time since it is still very short and coming in. I am hoping this is short term and that the doctor will change my care to medical grade honey. I am interested to see how it works and hopefully fast so I can start radiation. Hope that you are now doing well.

I have arnica Montana that I gave been using for pain. It works great! How are you using it post surgery? I read that you are not supposed to put it on wounds, such as unhealed scars
