Severe fatigue post accelerated partial breast radiation

one week out from 5-day treatment of external accelerated partial breast radiation and I have been slammed with severe exhaustion. I was fine the first couple of days. I can barely make it to the bathroom and it's been 3 days. My radiologist had said that most women get tired and may need a nap at the end of the day only. The pain in my breast ferls worse too. Has anyone experienced this kind of fatigue? I have to get back to teaching and I'm getting worried and depressed. Thanks so much for any input

    Loomisgal,

I had major fatique, not "can barely make it to the bathroom" but could sleep all day type of exhaustion. I am fighting a double ear infection as well, which may be part of it. I thought for sure I would not feel this tired a week after finishing. Hoping we both get our energy back.

I was told that the radiation effects continue for a couple of weeks after treatment ends. Make sure you're getting lots of liquids, protein, and minerals.

Loomisgal, I had APBI but mine was internal, utilizing the SAVI device. I felt great immediately afterwards but I think that was largely the adrenaline rush of completing the more active phase of treatment. The relief lasts for a few days, then your focus shifts to more long-term considerations & that can be emotionally exhausting. Exercising & getting your body back in shape will help. Get a referral for PT (be sure she's lymphedema qualified). You'll get your strength & range of motion back & your energy level will increase as you begin feeling stronger. And don't be so hard on yourself - it's only been a week & radiation is serious stuff!
