Starting Radiation October 2017

I'm using Miaderm (the regular version, no lidocaine) and two tubes will be plenty (5.5 weeks of treatment, 28 rounds). I'm using it 3-4 times per day, with great results. I'm getting my last of 28 treatments, tomorrow, and met the Dr. today. She is very happy with the skin. Even the techs said the skin looks good and that my use of Miaderm multiple times every day is probably helping. I do use the soap, as well, just on the radiated area. I suds it up in my hands and then use my hands to clean the area.
I did get red, quite dark by middle of week 5. Some itching, mostly around my port, and some discomfort under my arm/armpit area, but that just started yesterday, and is not too bad, really. I've had no delay in treatment, no open wounds, and nothing so bad that it interrupted my daily activities.
I hope this helps!
-
had 12 of 28 this morning. Think I am seeing some redness this afternoon (insert sad face) wanted to make it to the halfway mark at least.
No pain, just done splotchy redness
I assume it is from the bolus that I have during part of each treatment. And suppose I should look at the bright side-- rads should be killing any rogue cancer cells. And, again, it doesn't hurt
-
I just had 11/28 today, I got blisters on Monday in a spot above my left breast on the inside, my armpit is turning brown and is tender, too. I haven't been taking the greatest care of myself, dealing with my DH's services and the need to travel for treatments and stay with my daughter who is still an hour away from the cancer center. Also have some depression and just trying to get motivated again...where do you buy mioderm?
-
amazon sells Miaderm
Please try take care of yourself a bit.
-
utjoy, please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. So sorry for your loss.
-
I forgot my manners.
Utjoy, my condolences to you and your family.
-
utjoy - you can order the miaderm on Amazon.
Sending you hugs and wishing I could be more supportive...
-
utjoy - Hang in there, I cannot imagine what you are going through right now. As I mentioned, I lost my mom to cancer in February, just two months before I was diagnosed myself, and that was hard enough for me. I'll be thinking of you and come here as often as you can if you want to just talk. You definitely need to focus on taking care of yourself as much as possible right now.
LoJo100 - Yeah so happy for you being done!
******
I'll be completing #20 today, so 2/3 done with mine. I'm definitely having more redness, especially in my armpit area and under the breast. Yesterday they gave me some gel pads I can keep in the frig and use when needed, and the RO recommended ibuprofen for pain. So far I'm not to that point yet though. I may have to look into the miaderm everyone has recommended.
I have 6 more whole breast rads, and the last 5 will be targeted at the area where the cancer was located. I finish up the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and yes RO mentioned it would probably be the worst about a week after treatment was done, and then should start healing. So sounds like I'll be healing right about the time I go on vacation in early December at least.
Take care everybody and hang in there!
-
LoJo, wooo hoooo!!! So happy for you!!! I hope you have appointment free weeks ahead.
hugs and prayers,
Theresa
-
Sorry for your SE's utjoy. I just had #11 last night and I'm concerned because I'm really red, sore and swollen. Is anyone else's boob getting swollen from this?
-
So sorry for your loss utjoy.
I had 19/33 today. I have some skin changes as expected, no swelling, very little pain and itching. I had vertigo for five or so days that concerned my RO, but it seems to be gone now. RO said it wasn't caused by radiation, but he was concerned that it would interfere with it. I guess they didn't like the idea of me vomiting on their expensive equipment, lol.
-
Thanks, Teese!
Yes, today was the LAST radiation treatment. The techs gave me a diploma today... I'm 28/28!! This is also the last big treatment I have. I have no appointments between now and the week after thanksgiving. The week after Thanksgiving will be the next set of appointments to get my port out, follow-up with the RO and then meet with my MO to start Tamoxifen.
My brain hasn't gotten around the idea that I'm "done." It will take a bit. My RO actually told me to give myself a month to get used to no regular appointments and no major active treatment. I see why!
My radiation area is very red, dry and now itchy, but all-in-all, doing well. Will keep using the Miaderm to keep it well moisturized.
I will still be around! I hope all of you are doing well and that your SE's are minimal.
-LoJo
-
Lojo100 yeahhhhhhh on your GRADUATION!!! Glad to hear that you are done and that your SEs were minimal. My journey will start soon, I pray that I'll be as much of a trooper as you've been! Enjoy your no appts and enjoy your downtime:)
-
I completed my final (28th) whole breast radiation today. They also did the sim for my boosts. The rad tech explained that the boosts are pretty superficial (don't penetrate deeply) and the purpose is to go after any cancer cells that might be clinging to scar tissue. I thought that was pretty interesting. I have 7 boosts to go.
-
LoJo100-- Woot Woot!! Congrats!!! 28 of 28 done!!
Thank you for sharing your experiences with rads with us. Sure helps when you can see someone ahead of you and know that you, too, can handle rads.
Hope your next 2 weeks are full of healing.
Major treatments completed... so happy for you!
Enjoy your thanksgiving especially without doctors appointments.
-
14 of 28 in the books... so half way done!
Red blotchy area under where breast was still. Mastectomy scar is red
No itching nor pain (pain in my armpit is from cording from surgery that I see a PT person for)
Hope everything is having minimal SEs. Keep marching forward. Almost done with rads!!
-
Dodgersgirl: AWESOME! sorry about the itching and pain; but now the countdown is ON! Will be heading out for my rads consult in a few..I GOT THIS!
-
lifechoices2017--- I am not having itching or pain, so far and am thrilled by that
Yes, you do have this!! We are strong and we charge forward!!
-
LoJo - Congratulations on being finished with rads!!!! Here's to a quick healing! I am glad your SE's are minimal.
Dodger'sGirl - Congrats on the halfway mark. It will be over before you know it.
-
Hi All
I officially finished 21/21 rads on Monday. So far very little side effects post rads, some itching and a tiny bit of redness, but overall I'm healing/doing better than I thought I would. The breast center gave me their own lotion to spray on 3-4 times a day so not sure if that's why or not. I was so emotional Monday. My family and friends came to watch me ring the bell, and seeing them all made me cry happy tears. I think everything just hit me at once. This year has been so rough and so many people I know and care about have been diagnosed with cancer too. It just makes me wonder why. I will be thinking of you all as you finish your treatments. Stay strong and hopefully you all will have minimal SE's.LOJO and Others whom finished treatment-Yay Congrats!!
UTJOY-I am so sorry for your loss. I will be keeping you in my thoughts and prayers, I cannot imagine going through this and losing a loved one so close.
CATLADY-I am sorry for the loss of your mother and mother in law. What a horrible year for sure. My prayers go out to you and your family.
-
SpeedyTeach; WAY TO GOOOO!!!!! Yeah for you...
I will have 20rads beginning Nov 27 - Dec 22...prayerful that my body endures well! My RO mentioned the Miaderm on yesterday and Ive seen post on that so hopefully that will do me well.
I do have a question for you; did you use ANYTHING before your sessions? or did you wait until your symptoms showed. I see some post that suggest to wait until you see signs; others start lotioning like a week before.
Just trying to get a feel for what works best (knowing that what works for one may not work for another)...but still just hearing the feedback helps.
CONGRATS again on your 'finale'!
-
Thanks to all for your kind sentiments and prayers. It sucks to be me this year, BUT...I'm surviving ok. As my DH would say (as he rolls his eyes), "Stop wallerin' in that crap". He wasn't insensitive, just realistic.
I ordered and received the miaderm yesterday...today is 14/28! I get to go home for the weekend, something I dread in a way, yet, I also just want to go home and lick my wounds...alone. The long drives allow me a lot of time to think, to pray, to pull myself together. The hardest part is finding things to look forward to...re-defining my self on too many levels. Do I sell the boats? The motorhome? jeep? Clint's businesses? I'm not doing anything drastic at this point & am so fortunate to have our sons & good friends to help as I know nothing about the drilling or oil industry. Reality bites.
I still have so much to be thankful for. We all do...blessings my fellow warriors.
-
Lifechoices-My RO had me putting on their lotion right away. I got the lotion a week prior from them and started that week before starting treatment. I'm not sure if that's every RO's recommendation, but wouldn't hurt to ask yours. They also gave me a sheet with instructions on how to take care of my skin and what to do and not do. My RO also gave me samples of other oinments as needed.
-
SpeedyTeach; yeah they told me that I could treat a week before AND 2hrs before my sessions and then again right after. As Im reading most on these post lotion like 2-3 times a day but I guess I'll figure out those times once I find out the exact times of my treatments.
What was the lotion/spray that they gave you?
He also said that I could shower with 'warm' water...not too hot, but not cold (sounded like the three bears) lololololol... but he said because the breast temp may be different inside/out because of the rads its best to try to bathe in a lukewarm water.
I asked what soaps to use; he did say I could use the Miaderm soap, but I already use Dove and he said that'd be ok. Just to make sure that I get a 'good lather' before putting it on my skin as I wouldnt want any 'dry' patches to rub and irritate the skin.
AND... he said as for undergarments, a nice supporting cotton bra would be best for everyday. Said that other fabrics may cause sweat/moisture but cotton will keep it dryer.
I did ask if I needed to sleep in a bra...he said probably not going to be comfortable but a loose fitting cotton tshirt would probably work. He said that allows the skin to breathe and doesnt 'confine' me in my sleep (lol) ... Im a 42DD so it takes alot to confine them.
Lastly he said that w/me doing the prone breast radiation most of my affected areas would be the breast seeing that it wouldnt affect my arms and top stomach area; doing this allows the 'part where our breast falls' to not be as irritated and that should also help w/wearing a bra.
Its a waiting game; but one that Im near ending so we'll see. THANKS for your feedback, its greatly appreciated!
-
Lojo Congratulations!!! I’m happy for you! Take care of your skin for the next 2 weeks! My RO said that’s the average for people who had radiation.
I completed 25 radiations today. Next week is the 5 boosts focused on my incision. I’m glad I’ll be over just before the week of Thanksgiving.
PS said he does reconstruction 5 months after last radiation. I’ll have DIEP flap. Does any of you know if that surgery is as invasive as the mastectomy? I’m trying to plan time away for work, and also wondering if ill need family help at home.
Have a nice weekend!!
-
15 of 28 done. Looking forward to the weekend (2 days without treatments!!)
Noticing a new place of red blotchy skin near arm pit. Not sore. No itching. Also notice the skin in arm pit looks tan.
Still applying calendula oil twice a day and green tea 3 times a day.

Happy Saturday!
I start rads a week from tomorrow. Yep. On a Sunday. Since that's also Thanksgiving week and the rad center will have a long weekend, they'll be open one day the weekend before that. I was scheduled to start Friday, despite telling them I have carpal tunnel surgery on Thursday. Surgeon's orders are to do nothing for 24 hours after surgery. I can do both - did check with my orthopedic specialist. I just can't do rads the very next day.
My 'skin care education' is that Sunday. (It's my dry run day before starting the real thing.) I've been told no deodorant on the cancer side. Period. I've also read articles on studies that show there's no need to do that. And that feeling disgusting is more harmful than imaginary ... oops, scientifically disproved theories about potential harm. I also was told my skin must be absolutely dry before rads. Um. Before stronger/clinical strength antiperspirants came out, I had issues with visible moisture. i.e. pit stain and pit stank.
Questions:
1) What's your experience with deodorant/antiperspirant use during rads?
2) Some of you have mentioned using a lotion a week before starting rads. What lotion? Did your RO give a reason for doing this? I've got pure aloe vera and Aquaphor, and am debating if I should start putting one of those on.
3) For anyone out there who's also had a BMX - did/do you wear a bra during rads? I haven't worn one since before surgery. I'm thinking about buying some men's cotton undershirts. Post-op soreness around my scars was eased by wearing shirts with short sleeves.
4) Boosts: They'll be making a plastic mold of my scars for when I have boosts. I'm used to countless strangers seeing my chest; letting residents do mock exams, having students observe ... but this somehow sounds invasive. I suppose the question is, does that make me nuts? (wry grin)
Thanks.

So happy to read about those who are done Treatment! Congrats!
I had a long day yesterday at RO...the machine was down because the computer systems were down. I had an 8am appt..and finally left at 11am and gave them a number you call me since I live nearby. Of course the one day I leave my cell phone at home, just return home to get if and have a missed call asking if I can come back and I do.
Yesterday and today...I'm pretty miserable. Very raw under the treated breast, painful to move at night when I roll over, ordered Miaderm last night. I'm desperate and putting emu oil, lotion and cream on it as much as possible now. For the first time I cannot wait for this to be done. Just have 3 more whole breast treatments next week and then 5 targeted treatments after that. If this pain gets worse though not sure what I'll do. Going braless is tough since I am a 38DD so not Small!
So hoping I can manage this pain, itching and irritation for a fee more Weeks!

Felinemum,
To answer your questions:
1. I used regular deodorant on my non treated side and Scmidt's on my treated side. I put it on in the morning before work. I have rads at 4:00. On the weekends, I used regular on both sides. My arm pit isn't receiving radiation so it isn't sore. They just radiate to the edge of my pit.
2. I use Miaderm, emu oil and 100% aloe gel. I began using emu oil 2 weeks before rads to help soften the skin. I also started Miaderm a week before. My schedule for lotions are: miaderm in the am, and immediately after rads before I leave the office. Aloe vera gel (kept in the fridge) when I get home. I sometimes take off my bra for the rest of the evening , if I have no further plans. I use Miaderm again around 8 and then emu oil right before bed. I just finished my whole breast rads yesterday and have 5 boosts next week. Overall, my skin did very well. I am pink and I had 3 days of intense itching. I used cortisone cream. But as of right now I am good. Everyone follows different steps for skin care. I am certain you will find what works for you.
3. I didn't have a BMX so I cant answer this one.
4. I will be using a cone type thing for boosts.
Best of luck. It does go by quicker than you think.

Catlady, ask your RO for Silvadene for the raw skin. Mine gave me a 50g sample tub, and that was enough for me. I had the same problem with raw skin under my breasts as well as in my armpits, and it worked wonders for me. I'm a 40DD, so I hear you about going braless, but I have to admit that my skin got much better once I quit wearing a bra and started using silvadene.
