I’m worried
Hi Everyone,
I haven't posted in a while but am worried about something.
When I was diagnosed, my lymph nodes were clear, so I didn't have scans. I will start by saying, I have always been extremely health anxious, but I can't help it.
Anyway, about a month before I started chemo, I felt some discomfort on my right hand side, in the waist area, and kind of going further in towards my belly button, also a bit of an ache sometimes where my right kidney would be, and sometimes rumblings up near rib cage with a bit of bloating sometimes that would then subside. I've always also had a touch of ibs.
I will also add, I was majorly stressed by the diagnosis of breast cancer at first and became fixated by this righside pain after googling that the liver is in the right upper quadrant and that her2+ likes the liver. I was pressing hard into my side loads of times every day, reading up everything about liver mets, and suddenly then, feeling worse.
I went to my gp, she said it might be ibs or some sort of inflammation.
I started AC, the discomfort just stayed there all the way through, I hurt my left side one day after I got kicked with a rugby ball and the pain on the right disappeared for about a week and a half, then came back the same.
I went into it with the oncologist who didn't feel it was anything, he said liver mets don't present like that, he did a physical examination and assured me that my blood tests were perfect and he felt it was totally unrelated. He said by the time there is ongoing pain for what was about three months at that stage, that there would be other signs, and blood results would fluctuate.
I started Taxol and herceptin and I got a few new aches and pains in my upper and lower back and I seemed to have some more rumblings up towards my upper abdomen as well as still having the side ache, I said it to the doctor at chemo and she said it was most likely colon issues etc and she knew by my bloods and to look at me, that I was fine. I went to my gp again and was given a months supply of pantoflux, which on day 9 of taking them, the pain has disappeared, but it also coincided with the day after my 3rd Taxol and herceptin infusion and now I'm worried it was the chemo that made it stop.
Would the pain have gone after the first Taxol and herceptin infusion if it was related or more likely the 3rd? Does liver pain just disappear like that overnight on chemo, without even a twinge after? Could it have been the pantoflux kicking in? Would a radiation planning scan show problems when I go for that ? Am I mental? I'm so anxious all the time, it's horrible. This bloody disease!!!!!
Sorry about the long and winding post

I'm sorry I don't have any answers - I just wanted to say that I understand the anxiety. Once you have someone walk in the room and tell you how mortal you are, nothing is ever the same. You are NOT crazy! I would definitely write down all of your questions and then call your DRs office. Maybe even a nurse practitioner would take the time to explain everything and calm your fears - or move things if need be. Don't worry about being a pest - you need to know. Please post back when you find out something!

Thanks SophiaMarie, that’s the thing, I’ve expressed everything to three doctors and a head nurse and none of them seemed concerned at all. But like you said, the anxiety is so hard and once I feel one thing, I google, then I read a million discussion threads and then I fixate. Maybe it is just a fluke that the pain disappeared after third chemo and week into antacid treatment, and day after I spoke to a nurse about all my anxiety. maybe I should just try to trust that they know what they’re doing, but I just find it so hard. I don’t trust anything anymore

Elfmcg, I think that finding the balance between reasonable concern (worry) for your health and health anxiety driven worry is difficult, especially in the context of being in treatment for bc. IMO, it could be extremely helpful for you to find a therapist that has experience with women with bc AND treating people with anxiety. I hear it when you say "I have always been extremely health anxious, but I can't help it", however there ARE treatments for anxiety and skills that you can learn that can drastically affect how the anxiety affects you. It is even more important for those of us with a bc history to be able to sort out a real feeling of "something not right" from the typical "emotional noise" that health anxiety creates. You need to be able to discriminate between times when you can trust your providers (listen to them when they tell you it's okay) and the times that you need to push them to find answers. Anxiety is absolutely awful and can devastate people's lives. Please consider getting a referral to a well-qualified therapist. Sending you warm thoughts and best wishes.

thanks MT,
I am looking into that at the moment, I definitely need it.
I keep telling myself that surely if four medical professionals have heard my concerns, surely one of them at least would look further into it if needs be!!!

Hello Elf
In case this helps, I kept on getting a pain under my right rib and wondered too whether it was something to do with the liver. Turned out to be nothing more than a floating twelfth rib. A doc said it had just got a bit inflamed and would clear up. It did. That was five years ago. Hoping for this for you.
By the way, you'll see I had a similar diagnosis to you.
Best wishes
Alice

My doc has told me that pain from mets will not come and go. It will come, stay, and worsen with time. I am not sure if that is true for everyone, but I assume it to be true until proven otherwise.
Hoping your pain and anxiety both ease

I have IBS and I can tell you that when I was having chemo it was the worst it has ever been. I had symptoms on both sides and it sounds very similar to what you're dealing with right now. It took a long time for mine to calm down after chemo. It was so bad that I actually thought that I might have colon cancer! Of course I didn't. One of the things that I found with chemo is that it seems to make any pre-existing conditions much worse. The other thing that can make things bad is anxiety. Hugs and I hope it resolves soon.

elf - I too fixate on a pain and make it all consuming, I also had an ache and pain on my right side that started after last AC infusion and lasted through Taxol 1-3. By #4 completely gone but have a bit after #5. Why was it gone week 4? I really think because I was obsessing about something else!
I felt like I was going mental and my husband was like "you can't do this to yourself". I think I've finally just exhausted myself and have much more control at this point. When I say control, I mean of my reaction to BC. I'm doing all I can to fight this - I'm at the point where I can't let unfounded fear wreck my life. I think is so hard and I do think that medication can be helpful

Thanks everyone, I’m really going to try to worry less, and focus more on trying to get through this difficult enough time as it is, without constantly worrying about something even bigger than I already do.
Does anyone know, does the radiation planning scan for left breast include the liver, or do those scans not work the same as usual ct’s?
Thanks

I have heard that the radiation planning scan does not look for other issues unless it accidentally catches something.
Good luck
