Starting Radiation November 2017
Who is with me? I start my 21 treatments on Monday, November 6th.

AngelaJL-- I started rads in Oct but won't be finished until Nov 30th so would like to be part of this group, too (currently participating in the Oct Rads group)
-
I'm in, I'm 1week PFC. Went for mapping today, but won't have first one till 11/27. For no reason at all was quite anxious about this, however it turned out the radiation therapist went to my church and just a connection with her made me feel more at ease. The whole thing took maybe 45 min and that included a tour. Tats were nothing too.
You two gals will be nearly done before I even start, but I'm going to enjoy the break.
Thank you for starting this thread Angela, of course I'm happy to see you here too Dodgersgirl. How's your DH doing?
Theresa
-
Teese- enjoy your break between chemo and rads!! Sounds like you will be able to enjoy Thanksgiving, too!!!!
DH is continuing his cardiac rehab therapy. Thanks for asking. Dr called today because his hemoglobin numbers are too low. Sending him to his blood doctor.
Do you know who many rad treatments you will have? If I have already asked you that, please forgive my crummy recall-ability.
-
Dodgersgirl, I'm sure your DH feels like we do when his hgb is low. Hope the put him on some iron to get it up quick.
I'll have 30 treatments. No boosts. They made a mold I lay on so my arms and head are in the same place each time. I was comfortable and my right arm never got tired or cramped. However I read where you were laying in bed with your arm above your head (I think it was you)so I started that this week and will continue, to keep my arm limber. Good tip.
-
Teese,
I find that stretch in bed with right arm over my head, resting on pillows a great way to stretch out that shoulder/arm pit area. I have fallen asleep while stretching my arm!
I am going to physical therapy 2 times a week to work on ROM and scar/skin tightness. (And to break up cording). Sure seems to help
-
I start 6-7 weeks of treatments on November 13th. Hopefully I'll be done before the new year. This will be for my left chest wall and left & right armpits. I've had 6 treatments to my liver earlier.
My physical therapist told me to start applying Miaderm to my treatment areas daily starting now. I got another tattoo at my form/mold session today. I'll go for my simulation next week. They told me to expect my treatments to take about 40 minutes (just my liver took about 5 minutes, by comparison). Since I'll have over 30 sessions I'm considering asking them to play some guided meditation for me... or even an audio book
-
I'm in if there's room. I go for simulation on Thursday then rads start the following week- 20 total treatments (16 + 4 boost). I had my second surgery 2 weeks ago this coming Thursday so I'm pretty happy that they're moving me forward with rads. I want this behind me as fast as possible :-)
-
I will see RO on the ninth....so unless something crazy happens, will start radiation in November, Had chemo and bilateral mx already.
-
I completed chemo Friday and hope to get started with radiation in the next few weeks. I might be late November but will follow along so I am prepared. My chemo group was so helpful.
-
I start mine on Monday the 6th too!
-
Argggghhh - I hope to be starting in November too. However, waiting on genetics to determine if mastectomy is still on the table. So torn between just doing the rads and then IF it comes back do the mx.....or just do it and get it over with. Tick Tock - I've been waiting 3 weeks for my results.....waiting is playing so many tricks with my mind.
-
I just heard from my RO, I have an appointment with him on Nov 13. What are the steps involved in getting radiation set up? I am guessing that with Thanksgiving the following week I am not going to start until after Thanksgiving. How many appointments did you have before radiation started?
-
OCDAmy, I had 1 appointment for rads started. The first appointment included a visit with RO, then on to mapping where a mold was made for me to rest my arms in for each treatment as I have to keep both arms over my head during treatments. Mapping included 3 tattoos and 3 stickers with markings.
After all the measuring and marking was done my first visit was over. Next all the data points gathered during my mapping were turned over to the experts to create a rad plan for me. This took about a week. I then got a call from RO's office with my start date. Some people have a simulation run before starting. My RO does the dry run and real run on first appointment
As far as Thanksgiving, my center will be closed Thursday and Friday so will have rads the Sunday before Thanksgiving
-
DodgersGirl, thanks! I should have asked what was going to happen at this first appointment, I think I will call back and ask. I have my last expander fill this week and then get the port out a few days after my RO appointment. I am anxious to keep moving.
I herniated a disc in my neck several years ago and have some arthritis. How is your head situated during radiation? Is it on a pillow or something? Does your head need to be turned? I am a little worried my neck is going to hurt through this. I had PT so my range of motion with my arm is pretty good.
-
OCDAmy-- for my treatment my head is on something kind of hard and I am asked to keep my head turned to the left to radiate my right side. I have been wearing a stocking cap which I leave on and find it helps cushion the hardness under my neck. One treatment I just had a ball cap on and felt less comfortable in the neck area. Mention your concerns during mapping. Maybe they have something they can do to make the position more comfortable
-
DodgersGirl, are you doing yours lying on your back or front?
-
AngelaJL-- I am flat on my back with a bolster under my knees for my treatments.
-
I have been lurking on the many radiation sites for awhile and have learned a lot from you ladies. I started my rads treatment on October 23. I really wanted a shortened treatment but my RO was steadfast on the 6 weeks plus 4 boosts route. She said that I was not a candidate for the hypo-fractionated treatment due to the size of my tumor so...it looks like I will be around all of November (and into December for a while, too.) Like all of you, I can't wait until this is behind me.
So far, I have had eight treatments and the worst part is the drive (which when you think about it, is not a bad thing!) It takes me 40 minutes each way. It is not a bad drive, it just seems like such a time waster. I should listen to a book on tape or something to make it seem worthwhile! As far as the treatments go, it takes longer to get dressed, undressed, and into position than the actual treatment. One of the technicians said that the actual radiation treatment is under two minutes. Which again, isn't a bad thing! I have been slathering with Miaderm twice a day and Aquaphor at night. I have read that some of you say your RO doesn't recommend Aquaphor--I wonder why?
I have not experienced any real SE yet other than some tingling near my incision. I have followed the advise of many of you and try to walk at least 3 miles each day and eat healthier. I don't know if it has done any good, but it makes me feel like I have a little control over this unwanted detour in my life. I got rid of my underwire bras and bought some of the Genie bras that had been recommended. I think I will ditch them too and just wear a cami when I am home--which is most of the time (except for rads--and I will definitely wear one there!) I retired from teaching in June (diagnosed 2 weeks later!) and I am in constant awe of you ladies that are working full time plus dealing with all this craziness. I wish all of us a rather uneventful and boring November!
-
Welp, got my genetics back and I don't have any mutations related to breast cancer, but no surprise that I do have one related to colon cancer (3 generations in a row perished from it) but that's another story for another day. So onward to radiation in November. We can do this!
-
QUOTE: tlfrank "Welp, got my genetics back and I don't have any mutations related to breast cancer,"
That's awesome news and a relief I'm sure! I'm glad you got that over with so you can move forward too.
I elected not to do the testing b/c of insurance (I wish I could have). I may do it in the future but that may be putting the cart before the horse at this point~ IDK.
There's quite a few of us getting rads or about to this month. I wish us all luck.
-
I’ll be starting soon. I’ve got my mapping/planning session next week. I’ll most likely be doing 33 sessions. I’m not happy about that, but I can’t do accelerated since I did chemo so I don’t meet the criteria for a shorter regimen. I’m nervous about burning etc, but my RO feels confident they can help me keep it under control.
I’m so very ready to get this over with and keep moving forward. I want to feel like me again

When school was out in June, I planned to have my annual mammogram, a colonoscopy ( I am on the 3 year plan due to polyps) & a skin check (something that looked like a pimple but wasn't a pimple appeared on my thigh.) Well, the mammogram was "suspicious" and thus began my journey with DCIS & sidelined my plans for other "body checks." A reminder about making a colonoscopy appointment prompted me to make one. I first am to meet with the gastroenterologist next week. I am so nervous. Now that I know my cells can go wonky..this has me really freaked. And I should go to the dermatologist too. I was waiting until I was done with radiation... I don't know how I would cope with more doctor appointments not to mention another negative diagnosis. But we do what we have to do right? Does anyone know of anyone who faced multiple cancers at the same time. Mine (I don't think) could have metastasized since it was not invasive
-
Linwentz - I know what you mean about being appointment overwhelmed. I'm two months behind on my dental cleaning - Very bad since I'm the Admin for the dental hygiene department at the community college here! I also need to schedule with the dermatologist - (have had multiple basal cell carcinomas in the past). Facing having to take time off work every day for 6 weeks has made me put off these other two things. But you're right, we've got to do what we have to do.
I have not faced multiple cancers at the same time, but with the little I know at the moment, I don't think your DCIS could have metastasized otherwise it wouldn't be DCIS anymore. Just a guess, but I'm sure some one else will respond who has more knowledge.
Good Luck and hugs to you.

I have appt with RO on 11/14. I wish I could start RADS soon after but I have a feeling it won't start until December. Question - Can you color your hair during the period you are getting radiation treatments? Just wondering what kind of restrictions there are.
-
Ellen, I have not heard a word about hair coloring during treatment. A lot of buzz about lotions and deodorant but I haven't read or heard a peep about hair dye. My RO said not to shave the underarm that is being treated...& that was the first I ever heard that one! Maybe someone else on this forum has heard one way or another. When it doubt, ask your RO
-
I had my simulation and tattoos (6!) two weeks ago. I'll be face down for the treatment sessions, which I'm happy about. My RO said he prefers to have us face down (when not contraindicated) so that the beams are less likely to reach areas not targeted for treatment. He says it's safer and there are fewer long-term side-effects this way. Sounds good to me!
Other than not wearing deodorant and not taking antioxidant supplements, I haven't gotten much for instructions. Since I have ridiculously sensitive skin, they gave me a couple different types of creams to try out ahead of time to make sure they aren't going to cause a reaction on their own. (Radiagel? And something else I can't remember right now. Begins with a 'c'.)
Good luck to all of us!
-
Does anyone know whether or not a flu shot is a good idea when one is about to start radiation?
-
Angela, how is your head positioned...like it would be for a massage in a little hole?
-
My RO said that the radiation may stop hair growth in the underarm. She also said that it was okay to shave only if it's comfortable to do so, I'm thinking an electric razor may work. As far as deodorant, also okay if applied several hours before or after TX if doing it in the AM - again as long as it's comfortable to do so - I'm thinking a natural product such as "Toms" in a rollon or spray vs. stick would be most comfortable. I was advised that if shaving and deodorant become to painful, carrying natural, fragrance free baby wipes might be a good idea to fight odor mid day.
Calendula cream samples were given to me to try because I also have very sensitive skin. Another reccomendaton was to brew green tea and saturate cotton squares with it, and apply in the am, after TX and prior to bedtime. The tea is known to draw the heat out and minimize the burn.
I'm interested to hear what others have been told on these topics.
-
tlfrank-- I started rads in Oct. Today was 9 of 28. I have been applying calendula oil 1 hr before treatment and once in the evening every day (per RO).
I have also been using the green tea cotton squares 3 times a day. Today is the first time I could feel the cotton pads were getting warmer after applying green tea. I sure hope it is pulling out the heat from my skin
I am too early in rad treatments to know if anything is working though. Damage should start appearing after this week. Sure hoping to keep the damage to a minimum though. So far no pink skin at all.
I was also told by RO to use aquaphor at night once skin starts to show dryness.
