Port removal-local anesthetic or something better?
I'm having my port out in a few weeks. I have been offered the option of having it removed under a local anesthetic, or under something "a bit better." I think I had "something better" when it was inserted. I know I just had a local when the manmosite catheter was installed and removed. I tolerated all my ofthose.
Anyone have a recommendation?

I had mine taken out with just the local. I wasn't given the option of anything else or I would have taken it because I was really nervous about having it removed. It ended up being okay with the local, I just had to work really hard at not thinking about what was going on
I was alot more aware of the tugging and pressure sensations than I was when I had the port put in (when I was mildly sedated). I did like the fact that I felt "normal" right after the procedure because I didn't have any other anesthesia than the local. I could've driven myself home afterward if my husband hadn't been with me. But boy was I nervous in the time leading up to my appointment!! -
they knocked me out putting it in and taking it out. Fine by me lol

I keep putting off getting mine removed for this exact reason. The surgeon who put it in just uses a local to remove it. I want “something better" too. After all the crap we've been through and this is the thing that hangs me up ?!? Does anyone know if they suture the hole in the vein closed or does it just close up on its own with applied pressure ?

Thanks for the input, ladies! I've been putting the removal off for a couple of years now. Maybe it's time to get moving now
Legomaster- I've been wondering about stitching up the vein hole, too.

I'm scheduled to have my port removed in two weeks. My BS is going to remove it in her office. I heard it only takes a few minutes. I assume I'll be given a local.
I'm wary too. It was inserted in a hospital operating room and I was knocked out. I'm amazed that the removal is so quick and easy (when the insertion is such a big deal.) Since my port has a blood clot, I want it out ASAP so I can get off the blood thinners.

I had a PICC line, not a port, and the nurse applied very strong pressure on the vein for 5 minutes and then applied a pressure dressing that stayed on for 24 hours. I think they avoid putting any more holes in the vessel to try to seal it up.

I had local and it was fine.

Had my port removed this morning at my BS's office. Had a local. Took about 20 minutes. Tissue grew around it (cause I had it for a year) so it took a little extra time to free it. I only felt a little tugging. (I think the vein closed up on its own). She closed the wound with stitches and glue. The local has worn off now and I feel a little stinging. Tylenol should take care of it. I'm allowed to shower tomorrow.

I’m sure it’s nice to have that out Bellasmomtoo. I need to call and get an appointment. Just so easy to leave it though..

Timely topic as my port is coming out on Tuesday at the hospital with a local. From my understanding is putting a port in much more than taking it out

I had a local only, and it was even a bit difficult for them to remove in the general spectrum of how hard it can be, but it was fine. I specifically asked for nothing more because I wanted to go straight to work.

I had my port removed last week. I ended up having a local, which was just fine. The odd part was hearing all of those unnatural scritchy noises right under my ear. Ugh.
The steri strips can come off tomorrow. Then I really start moving on with my life. Hmmmm....
