sisters,

I have decided and concluded that I needed total hystrectomy asap.

I am 47 ok soon to be 48. Fared reasonably well regards to DMX, 8DD chemo and 6 wks of zapping, no delay no noticeable and or lingering SE. Zaps were done 4 wks ago. Got and will be getting really minor procedures done such as colonoscopy and minor orthopedic surgery. My hyst is on Oct 30th. Now you would agree why my username is very appripriate. My questions are:

1. How long was your recovery period? For example, How early you were ok w 30 min of regular traffic driving, 30 min of leisurely walking and very light cooking?

2. What do I must have?

I would really appreciate it.

I'm 61 and had a full hyst last Oct and it was really very manageable. My worst complaint was severe vomiting in the first 24 hours (anesthesia.) I finally just stopped taking pain meds and took Tylenol because I couldn't take the vomiting anymore.  My pain was light, more like pressure on the perineum really.  I was tired the first week post-op, but by day 10 I was going crazy, even called my doctor and begged for him to let me go back to work. By Day 14 I was driving everywhere and was cleared to carry my 15-lbs worth of laptop bag. I think I was doing simple cooking by day 7. Of course, I had already gone through menopause, so I didn't have any hot flashes or anything like that.

My OBGYN wants me to have a hysterectomy but I really don't want to do it. I have a very large fibroid that grew while on Tamoxifen.

I had a total open hyster in Feb. The pain felt like back labor the first night. By morning I felt good and ask to go home after one night. Compared to the bmx and Dino arms it was relatively easy. I was on Tylenol by the weekend and drove a short distance to do chores. I have to admit it was hard to have the lifting restrictions but otherwise it was fine.

Recovery time will somewhat depend on what procedure you have. I had a vaginal hysterectomy in July. I was in the hospital overnight. I started drinking fluids as soon as I got back to my room, and started walking the halls about 2 hours after I got out of recovery (between pushing the fluids & being able to more around, I was able to ditch the catheter that afternoon instead of them leaving it in overnight. Bring some comfortable, non-restrictive clothes to the hospital (and a cute robe for all that walking the halls). I didn't need any prescription pain pills, but you might want to stock up on some extra strength Tylenol. You will need some mini-pads as you will have some spotting which might go on for a month or even a little longer. It was two weeks before I drove (the doctor said the key is that you would be able to slam on the brakes if you needed to). I started walking right when I got home; first just down the block a couple times a day and then went a little farther each day. It was probably a couple weeks before I was walking half an hour, but I was back to my usual hour by about 5 weeks. I actually found sitting was a lot more uncomfortable than moving around. I did NOT do any other kind of exercises, no house cleaning etc. etc. for the full recommended 6 weeks.....and then gradually got back to my regular routine. I think because I did follow the doctors orders, it was a pretty easy recovery. My surgeon said that at 6 weeks you are 80% healed, but it takes 4 months to be at 100%.....which is a good thing to keep in mind.

As calidancer said, hystersisters.com has lots of good information & can answer most questions a person might have
