Surgical excision biopsy

Morning , Ladies... I was so happy when I came across this thread! I had an excise biopsy on Oct 10 and go for results this Thurs. My biopsy was done under fiull anasthestic and the incision appears to be right beside the nipple. I had A LOT of bleeding the first 1 1/2 days... I bled through 3 pj tops, housecoat and even through all that to the sheets. I had no expectation it would bleed so profusely, thankfully it has stopped now. My timeframe from the surgeon wanting to get the biopsy to actually having it done was only 1 1/2 weeks, I was very grateful for the speed (so we're my nerves) of the surgery date. I still find myself very tired but the pain is managable. I will be so very glad to get these results and at the same time am absolutely terrified. Thank you all for sharing your journey... it truly does wonders for my nerves and state of mind to be able to follow up on all of you.
-
Good luck tomorrow momallthetime!! We will be thinking about you!
Beautifulstargazer, welcome to the thread. Let us know what the results are!
-
thank u mystic. it's really such inopportune time, it always is, but this is really bad.
Beautiful glad you are coming along. what did they see b4 the excision?
-
momallthetime, I have a feeling you will be ok to go to appt. I wish there was someone to help you out and take care of YOU for a few days..but I am a mom of 5 ..so I know. We just keep on going. If it was my daughter I would do the same.
I took the Norco that night, not because of pain but just so I could sleep comfortably. Pain was more the week after for me, so I took 2 more..but honestly Tylenol would have sufficed. I kept that surgical bra on and I really think the breast feeding ice packs really helped with swelling and pain plus it kept the bruising to minimal. I think it will also depend on what type of incision..and where. My 1.8 cm lesion and they took out 5.6 x 4.5 x 1.8..and the margin still wasnt clean! In glad I pushed for the periareolar incisiin..but looking at the mammogram I know why he wanted to do the radial incision, it was deep in the breast. Scar wise, you would have to look very closely to see. There is a very slight indention/asymmetry that I see ..but only because Im looking. I never really looked at my breast before ..so it actually might have been there before!
I see the surgeon on friday.. we will decide then about the re-excision. Just had a post op mammogram and the radiologist didn't see any areas of suspicion, she knows about the margin but said it is probably too small for mamo to pick up.. if they cant see it..I don't know how they would use double localization wire to re-excise ?? Maybe he will want a breast MRI? I shall see.
Best wishes for Wednesday! You have so much on your plate, I hope it all turns out benign.

Mel checking in b4 hoping on the taxi. I do have my girls and hubby, they would be IN me if they could, they are so young in their 20's and do so much bcs of sis, that i try to keep it cool. I can't keep it too blase, because it's not fair to them, they know it's something to go through and i have to show a bit of what I feel. The concentration should be on the sis, and their well being.
Five kids must be a lot of fun sweetie. at least I have no little ones to worry about. I could sleep it off on the weekend.
Margins are margins, trust me, if surgeon felt it's not clean, then it's wise I THINK to re excise. Nothing is fool proof but...
I hope so too. TTYL

Best wishes and good thoughts for you today momallthetime!

Hi Ladies, I have posted more than a month about me but have been reading your posts on a daily basis. So this post is also for people who are going to come across and look for answers on their question.
I had my incisional biopsy on 10/10 and had to report at 6:30am. Got my IV straight away, at 8:15am got my Xanax and after 5-10min they took me to do needle localization. I received anesthesia for that but it wasn’t really helpful to my left breast since the mass was deeper, took me to tears-don’t want to scare anyone-. My right breast was not painful-closer to the nipple-. All that took about 30-40 min. My surgery was scheduled at 10am. I have to say I was in prep room going back and forth in between the procedures and my hubby and mom were allowed to stay with me. By the Time they took me to the operation room my doctor assistant came, the doctor anesthesiologist, lots of nurses and lots of questions were asked. 10:30am i was At the operation room and was told and felt the anesthesia in my hand, burning sensation. Woke up like zombie and had big pain in my throat From intubation. I was brought down to the room around 1:30pm. In a mean time I was in the recovery room my surgeon, his dr assistant, dr anesthesiologist and nurses told my family all is ok and I woke up. At 3:30pm I was Home
-
I had bleed the very first nigh and went my dressing to be changed-left side-. Had pain and was taking medication, not now. Here and there I feel some sharp pain but is going away. Still sleep in sports bra (44C) and I have cuts on both breasts of 7 inches around my nipples.
This Monday 16th doctor called and said is not cancer but Atypical Lobular Hyperplasia and have to follow up with him on 10/25.
Strips still stay, don’t fall off.. and have two weeks off from work since I have heavy lifting job.
I wish speedy recovery to all and God bless all

Momallthetime, thinking of you!!! Hope everything is going well
Mel- good luck on Friday, do let us know what your plan will be. If you do end up going back in, hope your insurance moves faster than last time!
-
Goga, I also had 2 weeks off.. and nerve pain for almost 3 weeks
-
Hi guys,I'm home sweet home. Everyone was so wonderful and made things much easier. What a different experience than what I went through in different settings.
It went really smoothly, i had one Percoset, i feel it, but at this time it's not bad. He also gave Keflex 2x day. Appointment is set for next week to see the BS, he will give the results and check on it.
As it turns out after buying like 10 sports bras - first i realized most have padding, hmm I don't need anymore padding, the ones that don't, don't do a/t for me. I'm like 36F who knows they are ALL different and wrong..
The cut is a radial cut towards what i would call from the areola and the valley between the breasts, so the bra causes xtra pain/discomfort. BS asked that i wear a bra for sure till Friday but then I'd be squeezing the area he cut, should I be doing this? My plan is to wear my loose shirt, go bra less, with a fancy scarf over me, does that make any sense?? I thought because the biopsy was under the fold he would go through there, but they put the needle towards the top, they said that it's in the center, so...anyway, any suggestions? Should i let it be or squeeze? Usually of course i prefer to wear a bra, it's good for my back and breasts, but...
Mel waiting along with you.
Everyone it was so wonderful to have you share and be there through all this, you guys are gr8 ladies.
Goga good for you.
-
momallthetime, I am so happy to hear things went well for you!!! Now go rest and recover to get ready for your daughter's next treatments. As for the bra vs no bra, I wore a compression style bra for 5 days after surgery. It made me feel like I was protecting my boob... so it would not "swing" and hit something. If you feel comfortable without one, I think you would be ok to let them hang free. I think it's a very personal decision
Good luck and let us know how everything goes!!
-
Hey mystic88 - thanks! It's more about not having the area squeezed just seems weird to put pressure there, def would prefer a bra. I liked it when i put it on after i left the place, but it was really squeezing. Maybe i'd put the sling on when i go out, so as not to bump into a/t...
You know what they say location, location...maybe when i'll have more pain after the local anesthesia wears off, maybe i'll really have to.
-
mom-- yup, definitely see how you feel when the local wears off. It would be great if all you needed was a sling for protection!
-
momallthetime, my surgeon insished on the surgical bra. I wore it for almost 3 weeks! I believe the compression is supposed to help prevent a seroma or hematoma. For me it was more comfortable, I would have more discomfort when I would remove it to shower. I actually held my breast while showering the first week! Lol.
Glad your home and it went well!
-
My breast is still swollen so the shape still looks full. Surgeon said that once the swelling goes down it may dip in and become more concave on that side. I'm not too worried about it. If I have a lopsided breast with a scar, I'll consider it a reminder of how blessed I am.
Surgery wasn't a picnic for me but it wasn't too horrible either. I fell asleep quickly and then woke up in recovery. You're going to do great! I'm so happy you have a doctor you know and trust! That is so important!
-
Hi guys, thanks for all the good pointers
(no pun intended) - I did take at the end a simple amoena bra - it's wire less front hooks, and just a soft material no padding, I had a scarf on top of it because it did not give me a great shape, but it seems to do the job. At night, it really did hurt, i put little pillows to support me on the side, laying flat was a no no. Once I settled in, it was ok. during the day today, i took the sling along, but i did not use it. My breast does look big, the areola is large! but i did not pick yet under the bandage, will take if off tom. They called yesterday and today to check up on me, they asked how I was doing, I said you REALLY wanna know!! How much time do you have?? Gosh i scared them, i told them I was holding my own.
They gave me Versa, i signed a release for intubation, but they did not need to do it, like you said, i was up and next thing I was in recovery. I wish my sleeping pill was like that, I take Ambien, and many nights my dreams are so vivid i hate it, and also it only lasts few hours, not a delicious 7/8 hour sleep. I knew I was alive when they offered me coffee. Oh the little luxuries.
Was a tough day with my DD. But I won't burden you here with this, lesson lesson, DON'T TRUST ANY DOCS. Seriously, we are supposedly in very good places in NY and they neglected and pooh pooh away lots of stuff, causing much grief. ALWAYS, ask for copies of every Blood test, scans, reports. That I did, and it has been very helpful.
Follow up on Tuesday.
Take good care everyone and thank you.
-
I'm glad to hear you were able to make it to your DD's appointments, even if they caused a lot of frustration. Hope everything gets figured out on her end and that both of you recover without any setbacks!!
Mel, good luck at your appointment tomorrow!!!
-
Well, it wasn't what I wanted to hear! 🤣They put several markers when they did the excision so they will use that to figure out where the double wire will be placed for excision. He wants to take another 2-3 cm ..
Mammogram only showed surgical changes nothing suspicious but the surgeon and radiologist discussed it and think it still should come out . I insisted on breast MRI. And agreed to do it in December..my 2 weeks off will be during christmas break/new years.
It is what it is. Hope you ladies are doing well.
-
I'm sorry Mel... at least you have things planned and can move a little bit faster than last time...
-
Yes, and the fear is gone. Im sure it is just adh and not something else lurking. Just doing it as a precautionary measure as they recommend.
-
Good!
Hope you can relax and do some fun things between now and then!
-
He actually suggested Novemeber but I figure December would be a good month, right before my daughter breaks for school. I normally have to work the holidays so I would get the holidays off! I plan to catch a train to NM the day after surgery to visit my folks in NM! It's been a few years since I've had Christmas in NM. Hopefully it works out. ☺
-
That would be great!! I think planning should be easier as well now that you know what to expect post op
-
Mel this is such a nuisance huh??! Well as mystic said now you have a day, and you can plan stuff around it. Let's hope for the best.
Definitely feeling the pulling now, i'm wearing the bra and adding little pillows for sleep. Took some advil but it's bearable, now that the bigger bandage is off i already see the indentation, the strip is still across the cut, i hope it melts in the showers.
Take care e/o
-
So I had some pain I thought it was from the surgery, but today at the scheduled appointment doc said it's fluid build up right at the corner of the cut. So he took it out with a syringe, i thought it's gonna hurt but it actually felt good. But hmm he kinda left a very small i'd call it cyst maybe still there, it's painful, i am exhausted so i did not call them back today if it's still there tom, i guess i'll call them. Did anyone have this? What a pain ( no pun intended), - it i don't do a/t about it, it will just linger?
Doc said it's benign. Pathology reads: No residual Papilloma. - Firbrocystic change, proliferative type, associated with microcalcifications - minute focus of atypical lobular hperplasia.
I'll speak to radiologist md tomorrow, supposedly BS is not concerned, and he knows about my daughter, but should i be worried at all with any of these fancy words?? Dr.Google says it could be something to think about could be not. Gotta love it.
Hope y'all doing all right.
-
Mom, sounds like you got a seroma. That really sucks, but should not be a big problem. Sometimes they resorb on their own, but when they cause pain, draining them is a good option,.
Glad to hear your results were benign!!! Looks like those terms are all good news. They may want to monitor closely due to the focus of ALH
Let us know what the drs say tomorrow! Hope things are better with your daughter, too.
-
Glad for the good news mommallthetime, sorry for the seroma 😑
-
mystic, do have residual pain? I was feeling good until after my mammogram now I keep getting burning sharp stabbing pains in that breast. Of course I jump to the conclusion that the mammo is causing migration of the 10 clips they left behind. Haha.
-
I have some pain every now and then. Most of the time it feels just fine, but it will hurt if I stretch my arm out or if I lay down on my belly.
I'm sure the multiple compressions for mammos don't help your situation at all
