Chemo delay due to WBC

I was wondering from others who are further along in this process. Have you had chemo sessions pushed back due to low WBC?

I had chemo #1 and on day 8 my WBC were .6, so will be tested again in a week. I have read that typically nadir is Day 7-10. So hopefully they will pick up soon

Hi Jennifer - yes it does happen. It happened to me with my first chemo too. My WBC was .7. I even had the neulasta shot the day after chemo. It did finally kick in so my chemo didn't get delayed, but I did AC every 3 weeks not 2. Are they giving you neulasta?

When I was on AC, I had neulasta and received treatment every 2 weeks. My WBC stayed ok. Now, I'm on weekly Taxol & Carboplatin every 3 weeks and I need to give myself 2-3 neupogen injections a week. That keeps my WBC counts up high enough to avoid taking a week off.

I seem to have run into several issues with counts and it's frustrating. I hope you bounce back quickly!

my doctor was more concerned with the neutrophil count than total WBC. I did have a one week delay on my second to last Taxol treatment. I only received neulasta with the AC portion of my chemo.

Jennifer are you getting neulasta or neupogen shots? I think most people do during the AC portion. Those drugs are powerful.

Yes I had the neulasta onpro. My neutrophil was really low too. And platlets were less than normal. Although hemoglobins were good.

As much as I don't look forward to chemo, I am anxious to get it done. Being TN you don't have a lot of treatment options

Hi Jennifer. Yes, my weekly taxol chemo were delayed twice in a row after taxol #4, due to low counts of neutrophils (0.94, 0.87). I felt relieved with my first delay because I was exhausted at the time and really glad for one more week break from chemo. One week later, when I got another phone call from the oncology unit about my second delay, I felt on the edge. Luckly my oncologist rang me the next day telling me that it is not uncommon for these to happen. When I returned for my taxol #5 with neutrophil count of (1.13), my oncologist already decided to reduce my chemo dosage by 15%. I will stay on this dosage for the remaining treatments. I felt better with my taxol #5, not as sick at the infusion time, less se for the rest of the week. I had my taxol #6 this morning. My neutrophil count crawled up to 2.0. yay! The count has stayed below 2 for previous 6 blood tests.

My neutrophil count was 0.9 before my second AC. My oncologist then prescribed nuelasta for the remaining three AC. I proceeded to AC #2 without delay. Best wishes.

Yes, platelets have been tricky for me. I don't get treatment if they go below 100. A week off always solves but it's hard to wait. I haven't had a clear cut pattern but many others do. If so, your MO may be able to come up with a proactive plan.
