Specialist referral -why??

Hi all,

Just had my first mammogram mid-September (routine), was called back fro additional images and then an ultrasound was done last Thursday. My primary doctor's office called today and said the ultrasound looked ok but they want me to see a specialist...? I of course asked why and the girl at the office didn't know. Has anyone else experienced this? I'm just very confused and of course worried.

I'm 41 and I had a breast reduction about 15 years ago and kind of chalked up the call back and ultrasound to that.

That would really irritate me...to have someone call me to refer me to a specialist and have no idea why. I hope you call back and ask to speak with someone that can give you some information.

Spoke to the specialist's office this morning and they stated that the ultrasound says benign but the second mammogram states additional images needed. Well wouldn't that have been the ultrasound?? I'm so confused. My appointment is next Thursday....

mishelly, not really. Mammograms "see" stuff that ultrasounds don't see well, and vice versa.

Thanks, I guess I assumed that if the mammogram saw something and then an ultrasound was done and it was benign that was the end of it.

they may want the spot evaluated by the specialist and may order an MRI to get a better look. Hoping this is all related to the reduction and nothing to worry about
