DCIS just diagnosed in both breasts

I was just diagnosed with DCIS in both breasts. Test have been going on since July. My sister is a breast cancer survivor and had a double mastectomy. My left breast was diagnosed in August with an ultrasound biopsy. They did an MRI on both breast after that and found a mass in my right breast so did an MRI guided biopsy. I have an appointment Tuesday with my surgeon to go over the results. I picked up my pathology report myself from the hospital on Friday because I couldn't wait to see if it was in my right breast as well. My surgeon told me before the biopsy if it is in both breast I will probably have to have a double mastectomy. Just wondering if anyone knows if this is normal. He also didn't mention radiation or chemotherapy. My sister had to do chemotherapy. Do they do double mastectomy without doing chemotherapy? Also does anyone know what the test P63 is? It was on my pathology report and was positive and I can't find anything about it. Thanks for reading and helping me. Feeling very much alone right now.

    Hi Cindyluhoo,

    I'm sorry for the reason you find yourself here, but you have found a great place for support and encouragement. I'm sure others will be along soon to welcome and answer your questions. I also had DCIS. (right breast only) With pure DCIS chemotherapy isn't used as the cancer is noninvasive, meaning it is still contained in the ductal walls and had not invaded the breast tissue. And if you do have double mastectomy you usually don't require radiation (although in unusual circumstances, as in close to chest wall it may be recommended). You usually won't know until surgery and final pathology if there is absolutely no invasion. But for right now, it sounds like they have determined from your biopsy sample that you have DCIS. You are in the hardest part right now where you have to wait and don't have all the answers. We are here for you. I'm sure others, with more knowledge, will be along to answer your questions. I just wanted to at least let you know your not alone, we are here for you. Sending you hugs.

    Edited to say: does your pathology report mention any specifics of your DCIS, such as grade or ER+ or ER-? I'm sure your surgeon will go over it with you but these are helpful to know. As far as the P63 test, don't know what that is.

    DCIS in my L breast. BMX on 3/31. I chose a BMX for peace of mind. If I wouldn't have chosen BMX, then a lumpectomy would have been performed on L breast, with radiation to follow. As stated in another post, chemo is not warranted with pure, stage 0 DCIS. Final pathology report will give you the accurate stage and grade.

    Thank you so much for posting. No..I'm not seeing anything. I meet with my surgeon tomorrow so hopefully will know more. I guess I'm just wondering if it is normal for them to do a double mastectomy if they find ductal carcinoma in both breasts. I do have breast cancer in my family. Also I have discharge from my left breast and pain in both. Probably has nothing to do with my diagnosis. Thanks again for posting. It's nice to have someone to discuss this with.     Thank you for posting. I am certainly going to ask alot of questions tomorrow. Again, just wondering if it's normal to have a double mastectomy if they find this in both breasts. Trust me, I love my boobs but I love me more so will do whatever is recommended. I do have breast cancer in my family so maybe that's why they are recommending the double mastectomy. I just don't know. This whole thing has taken a long time. My left breast was diagnosed back in July. My right was just diagnosed. Prayers to you and thanks again❤🐕
