Period question...I know, i know
hi all!
Hope everyone is doing ok. My mastectomy (double) is scheduled 10/19. I got my IUD removed right after I was diagnosed (hormone positive) and I am thinking, even with my remedial math skills, I may get my period around my surgery.
1. Can you wear tampons at the hospital? Not in surgery right?
2. What about showering?! After surg, I can't for many days?!
3. Anything else I should plan for/ mentally prepare for?
Once again, I'm SO blessed being a woman. If the boobs aren't trying to murder me, the uterus will toss in some blood and cramps for some good fun!Good times.

Well, the silver lining is that maybe the pain meds will help with the menstrual cramps. I was able to shower the day after surgery but I think every doctor is different. I would think they would want you to wear a pad in the hospital. Even with way sore chestand arms I could have managed a tampon the second day. First time getting up to pee though I needed help pulling up my underwear and wiping. After that I was ok. Just make sure all your supplies are out and where you can reach them. Getting into the back of a cabinet would have been difficult

Here's how it was for me- no tampons during surgery. To be honest, inserting one after my mastectomy would have been difficult and painful. Those chest muscles you use to bring your arms in front of you are going to be very sore!
I wasn't allowed a shower until the drains came out day 5, but a could wash from the waist down, I just adjusted the shower head pointing down and stood towards the back. Many on this site have suggested a flexible shower head to help with this. I made darn sure not to get my bandage wet!
Also, don't be surprised if the surgery throws your cycle off. My period came almost 10 days early, immediately after my surgery. The next cycle was really long, presumably to get back to "normal."
There are lots of suggestions on this forum, some you may find helpful and others you may not need. Best of luck for an easy surgery and recovery!

For the surgery, the hospital provided their own underpants and pad once I told them I had my period. (Got it right on the day of surgery, wouldn't you know). The nurses also appreciated the heads-up after surgery, since they were the ones checking my urine. For what it's worth, my flow was a lot less than usual.

Simple answer is you need to ask your doctor. I'm guessing the surgery will have to be rescheduled, but really don't know. Best wishes!

I had my period during my lumpectomy. It came a week early I think because of stress, just in time, lol. Yup, you can't wear a tampon in surgery, that's a huge no-no. Just tell your pre-op nurse and they will give you a horrifically large pad to wear with those mesh hospital panties that they give you post-partum. It's totally not a big deal and they see it all the time....I stressed about it and really shouldn't have.
If you think you might have trouble staying clean and not being able to shower, how about some baby wipes for down there? That's what I would do, I think.

A hand-held shower makes it so much easier to keep the bottom half clean without getting your dressing wet. It also makes it easier to keep your shower stall clean!
