    Hello fellow Book Dragons! (loved that tee shirt).

    I've been AWOL all summer, moving house and settling in. But still reading, so wanted to just mention the best books that I've read this summer.


    The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls. There is a movie coming out on this book, but I wanted to read it first. The life these kids had,, OMG,,, a really amazing memoir.

    A Promise to Kill by Erik Storey. Book #2 of the Clyde Barr series. If you like Jack Reacher,,, then I think you'll like Clyde Barr. Even Lee Child like him.

    In a Dark, Dark Wood & The Woman in Cabin 10 by Ruth Ware. Excellent thrillers.

    Her Every Fear & The Girl with a Clock for a Heart by Peter Swanson. More excellent thrillers.

    Working my way thru David Rosenfelt's Andy Carpenter series. Waiting on book 5 at the library.

    The Thirst by Jo Nesbo. Harry Hole #11 I love this series.

    and currently reading Y is for Yesterday, Sue Grafton's latest,,,,

    Can't wait to read The Last Tudor by Philippa Gregory. Just got it yesterday but I am in the middle of re-reading the Twilight books.

    The Once and Future Liberal:After Identity Politics, by Columbia University Professor Mark Lilla...Just got my library reserve notice for the book. Can't wait for the library to open tomorrow so I can get it! Not sure if any of you read his NY Times Op-Ed following the election. Caused a s'!t storm and Harper Collins asked him to expand on the column....It was The Times most read Op-Ed of 2016.

    Here's a recommendation:

    Piece of the World by Christina Baker Kline (the author of Orphan Train). The main character, Christina Olson, is a disabled woman who spends her entire life on a farmhouse in Maine. The story tracks her life (the fiction part). Andrew Wyeth, the famous American painter, came to town to visit friends and decided that he wanted to paint at Christina's farmhouse. He spent the next 20+ summers painting there and Christina became his muse. She was his model for his famous painting "Christina's World" (the fact part). Very well written and entertaining.

    Glennie, thanks for the recommendation of the Clyde Barr series by Erik Storey. I've read all of the Jack Reacher books and I agree Clyde Barr is an intriguing hero in a fast paced thriller. I started with the first title, Nothing Short of Dying. My husband is enjoying it too.

    Ruth, me too, I enjoyed A Piece of the World by Christina Baker Kline.

    My favorite book of the summer was Born a Crime, Trevor Noah's memoir of his childhood and teenage years growing up in South Africa during and just after apartheid. It was fascinating from a historical perspective even if one doesn't follow his work, but for fans (I am one) it is particularly intriguing to see how his upbringing helped shape his talent into a successful entertainment career. Very well written and easy to read despite the sometimes difficult subject matter. Definitely recommended.

    Hubby had listened to the books on tape version, which Noah narrated himself. Given Noah's talent for voices, I suspect that would be a great option for those who enjoy books on tape.

    The rest of my summer reading has been mostly forgettable but fun trash novels. I did also finish Y is for Yesterday, though I found it someone dark and depressing, even for Grafton....

    I just finished From Sand and Ash by Amy Harmon which I did not enjoy. It is a romance novel set in Italy during ww2 between a Catholic priest and a Jewish girl. First, I'm not a romance novel enthusiast but it is for my book club so read most of it and second I thought it dealt too lightly with the holocaust aspects. The author was intrigued by the role of Catholics in providing sanctuary to Jewish people during the time, but I thought the romance part was too center stage.

    I finished The Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown. It is about 9 American rowers from University of Washington and their quest for the gold medal in the 1936 Berlin Games. I really enjoyed this book, told from the perspective of one of the rowers, as well as contrasted with how Germany used the 1936 Olympics to try to show the world how wonderful the new germany was. And an interesting glimpse into poverty of the 1930's in the US. I love WWII fiction, but I also like to read non-fiction once and a while too. This was a good read.

    I'd like to selfishly refer my book on this topic ... The Boyfriend by Karen M. Tidwell ::) I'm hoping to have the second one out in December or January, but with planning a wedding, raising a 4 year old, working full time and now this...well that might get delayed again. Or time out of my full time job for this stuff will allow me more time to write...oddly.

    Guess I should introduce myself. I followed Ruth to this group. And, she’ll be interested to know I’m currently reading an Eleanor Roosevelt bio. It’s a compilation of her writings.

    My favorite genre is historical fiction. Ruth has led me to several great books. My son shares my history interests too and gives me great tips.

    It’s fun to be on a board with real authors!
