Surgical excision biopsy

My scabs finally fell off today! The incision looks a little bit open on the bottom end (probably from overusing my arm earlier than I should have...) but otherwise looking like it's healing.
I am calling my BS tomorrow anyway because I got a call from my pathologist who wanted to make sure I got my report. I have never heard of this happening, so I want to make sure he didn't write an amendment to the report or something along those lines.
-
mommakat, I definitely had more pain the second week than the first. The hard lump is still there but softer. I did massage with coconut oil and applied ice well into the second week because it made it felt better. I am still having incision pain and nipple pain. My left nipple is so sensitive when the wind blows!
Back to work tomorrow!
-
Two weeks out from surgery now and got the "all clear" from the doc today. She reminded me that liquid vitamin E, massaged into the incision scar will help tremendously to reduce the scarring. Just take a Vitamin E capsule and poke it with a pin to get a drop or two.
Blessings,
Jamie
-
mystic, did you talk to your BS?
-
I just got a call back from them Mel, thanks for asking! No changes to the report as far as they can see. They are not sure why the pathologist called me so they are going to look into it and call me if anything changes. How are you feeling? And how are you doing back at work?

I'm 5 days post surgery and all of a sudden I'm getting intermittent sharp stinging pain. (Nerve pain?) I'm too scared to take off the small bandages and look at my incision.
My surgeon didn't see me after surgery at all. I was just discharged by the nurses after recovery...so I had nobody to ask questions about how surgery went, why it took longer than planned or how things looked. Did any of you see your surgeon after your surgery before being discharged?
Also, did any of you have nipple discharge prior to surgery? If so, did you have any changes to that post-surgery?
Hope everyone is recovering well! You all cross my mind throughout the day!
-
MamaBee,
I didn't see my surgeon afterwards either. I know she went out and spoke with my husband, but a nurse did the discharging as well. Are you referring to the steri strips? I was told not to remove them and to let them fall off on their own. I ended up "encouraging" them to come off almost 2 weeks out I think.
I had a little bit of nipple discharge that I still see on and off, but I think that is associated with other issues I have going on more than with the breast mass itself.
Hope you continue healing well and that the stinging pains go away soon!
-
Thank you Mystic!
I have a bandage on (cotton padding with a transparent edge) that I can't bring myself to take off because I don't want to see my incision. The steristrips are underneath the bandage. My incision was fairly big because my lump was 4 1/2cm x 3.3cm x 2.2cm.
My nipple discharge was unilateral, uniduct and yellow...small drop, only when expressed. Surgeon was insistent that it was hormonal and not related to malignancy. After surgery, the discharge had a pinkish/reddish tinge and then got dark in colour. As I said, I have no one to ask as my surgeon is not available for an appt. I'm concerned that because I see signs of blood in the discharge, that she has obviously operated on wherever the discharge was originating from...maybe indicating that it's not hormonal
This period of waiting for results is its own special kind of torture
-
Mamabee, I sometimes saw my surgeons after surgery (not the one at Duke), and sometimes not. For example, after my lx I didn't, after my mx I did (I was admitted to the unit, but I was able to discharge after lunch the same day after my surgeon rounded on me). If you are concerned about the discharge, call the surgeon's office and talk to a nurse. I wouldn't read anything into the changes. I know waiting is hard, but as you've already had the procedure, you don't have that much longer to wait. Sending thoughts of good results for you!
-
I agree wit MTwimab MamaBee- if there is anything, anything at all, that is concerning you, call your dr. You have the right to get answers.
Keep us updated!
-
thank you ladies! So grateful for all of you!

Surgeon just called.....it's BENIGN!!!!
Let me state for the record because so many people ask this question...just like I did!...
My lump was rated a bi rads 5! (96% chance of malignancy) Imaging showed it as being 4 1/2cm and upon excision it was over 6cm....and it is completely BENIGN!!! So yes, sweet ones, it IS possible! I wish I had found more testimonies about that possibility...so I'm leaving mine here for others to find.
I also had/have unilateral, uniduct serous discharge, a small eczema like rash on my breast (which I had never had before), shock pains in my breast and underarm, pain in my shoulder and shoulder blade, slightly swollen axillary node(s), drastic rapid weight loss, no appetite, lumps on my collarbone (possibly nodes)...and SO many more symptoms.
I don't have the pathology report yet but she said we would go over it at our follow up appt. Will include my pathology results when I have them.
Will be getting tests/scans for the collarbone lumps and right abdomen and pelvis. I'm not out of the woods yet...malignancy elsewhere is still a possibility and is being investigated...but it's not BC!
So grateful for all of of the wisdom and support from everyone here during such an emotional and difficult time!
-
Yaaaay MamaBee! That is great news and thank for providing that ray of hope for those women who come after you. I do continue to hope that they find (b9) answers for your other concerns!
-
Yay MamaBee!!!! That's fantastic!!!
-
congratulations mamabee that's great,
-
thank you bibi!
My pain seems to be worse this week than it was in the first week. Did anyone else still take Tylenol in week two? I still can't move around without using my left arm to secure my left breast in one position because one wrong angle or wrong move can send shocks ofpain through my breast.
-
sorry you're still in pain and needing Tylenol. I was still in mild pain but did not need meds. Could it be nerve pain? I was definitely in more pain this time than last year, I think because of where the incision was, could that have something to do with your pain?
I went to my OB but he hadn't received the test results from breast center so couldn't offer any recommendations on the benign findings of PASH etc. I have another appointment with him next month after having sono of uterus etc done and I called to have results sent, hoping this time he has them as I would like a second opinion on PASH
-
Hopeyour ultrasound comes back all clear and that you get the answers and reassurance you need about PASH!
-
Good luck Bibi! I will have a mammo in December to get my new baseline pictures.
-
mammabee great news! yes, it's very thoughtful for you to leave a footmark, it's important.
So far i have had a hard time getting a good sports bra for the size I am looking for. They lie about the sizes on the packages, maybe I am 34DDD or 36 - they all have different sizes but it says let's say 36 and it barely covered my niple, much less the rest of the breast. Still looking.
Mystic the still did not call you?
-
Momallthetime, they did.. I think my post was pushed to the last page? Anyway there was no new information, so I am unsure why the pathologist called me. The BS's assistant said they would look into it and call back if there was anything additional, but they have not called me sine then. So I assume no news is good news
I'm sorry you are having such a hard time trying to find a good sports bra. Are you feeling well enough to go out shopping and try to see if you can find something?
-
mystic what if you get in touch with the pathologist office yourself? is it a possibility?
I am just fine, it's just that i have a crisis with my DD now, and i'm literally working on getting the right treatment for her. so to go out to the store is a job, but i might still do it. I am kinda thinking in getting in touch with the surgeon, and see if it would be ok to postpone this whole thing, as of today and tom, we are going to dif docs to get opinions for her tx, and i'm not sure if it will be settled by next week, and this business of pain etc... if i'm out of the picture it's not good, because i'm the one that takes care of the medical side, talking to docs and being her companion, so this is messed up.
it's a papiloma, i wonder how long we could wait to take it out. it would be about 8 weeks sinceit was discovered in the biopsy, if i could jus wak around with it, it would give me some leeway till i settle things with her. i did do the BT already, but i'd just redo it, i wonder how urgent it is.
-
I think I am just going to let it be and assume no news is good news. I will be seeing my BS anyway in December for mammos, so I will just bring it up then if needed.
I hope your DD is ok. It must be hard, but you need to take care of yourself as well so you can properly look after her. Please keep strong!!! I don't see why it would be an issue for you to wait a little while longer for surgery of a papilloma. We all know there is always a chance something else can be found within the papilloma that would be more concerning, but it would be great if you had a chance go get everything else in order first. That way you can focus on healing
-
Hello ladies, hope your all doing great with recovery. 19 days post op, I'm still feeling pain twinges but healing well. Spoke with my hematologist and gave her the report..she convinced me to go ahead with the re-excision. Primary MD put in for a stat mammogram and I'll see the surgeon after and do the waiting game with authorization. Going to try to schedule in December so I can be off work for the holidays and max out my out of pocket.
Momallthetime, Stay strong, your daughter needs you. If you can, delegate to others..you need to take care of yourself too! Im sure you could push it back further, but if your up for it, you might as well get it over with. I can tell your the kind of mom that wont let it keep you down because you have things to do ..like take care of your daughter! Best wishes.
-
Mel! Good, I'm glad you have a treatment plan set up. Hopefully your insurance doesn't take as long this time to authorize your sx!!
-
Mel i "could hear" that you are comfortable with the idea, it seems to be a logical decision so you won't rive yourself crazy.
Thanks you guys so much. As it turns out, there was ANOTHER emergency on the 10th, ER...hospital, we came back yesterday, her hubby was covering w the kids. Thursday she has new appointment with Rads person, and I really have to b there, i asked around about postponing this nonsense on Wed, but each doc including hers ( a new Onco) told me not to, first the pre op is done, and who knows what's gonna be like the week after, so I am counting in going on Wed, BUT my plan is to go w her Thursday AM. I am thinking in buying a sling, maybe use it as protection? I'd love to sleep it off w some good narcotics, but you guys think I'll be able to go, It's very early in the AM, i just have to be there for that appointment and then I'd head back. You guys think it's possible? Pain wise? Obviously at that time I cannot be on heavy meds because i gotta pay attention.
I'm telling you, you cannot make this stuff up, if i'd read it in a book, i'd go like yeah sure....
-
momallthetime, I'm so sorry you keep having things come up. It's probably easier said than done, but remember to take care of yourself.
I think you should be able to help out on Thursday as long as you are not the one driving. The pain scale ranges (as you can see from all our posts above). I did not need any pain meds the day after surgery, but MamaBee had ongoing pain many days post-op. A lot depends on how large your mass is, where the incision is, and your pain tolerance in general. Just don't overuse your arm and try to rest as much as possible after her appointment.
I'll be thinking of you!!
-
momallthetime...you are incredible! Such an amazing Mother!
For me, it was my first ever surgery and the anaesthesia threw me off. I was a little out of it for a few days. My lump that was removed was huge at 6.5cm x 6cm x 3cm so my incision was pretty big. I also had a 3 x 2 lump, 6 core samples and 3 fine needle samples taken from another area...so the extended pain is understandable. Most other women ive heard from had a much easier recovery and felt decent enough to function on day two. Just wear a binder or very supportive bra and rest as soon as you can. I'll be thinking of you
-
mystic - mamabee - thanks so much. I'm gonna look for the sling today, it was my hubby's idea, kinda have ppl stay away. mamebee yeah, that was really quite an excision! Can i ask you how did that change your breast hmm how shall we say, architecture? The breast being excised already is more loopy, my thingy is right under the fold, so i cannot imagine what's gonna hold it up at all if he has to be more generous in the cut than a small cut. I do trust him, i've known him for years. He took care of my DD at first, very caring man.
Thank you so much for your support, i also never had anesthesia or any surgery, do you believe it? And my daughter went to Hell and back. The truth my brain gotta function because i help her with decisions, so we can only hope for the best. I'll let you guys know.
