Stomach distension
Hi,
I have quite extensive Stage IV mets through bones, liver, bowel. But what I am finding really difficult is an unexplained huge belly. I'm talking 6 months pregnant looking. The doctors have tried diuretics with no effect and can't drain it because the scans don't show any particular pockets of fluid. So what is it?!!! Anyone else have this problem?

Yes, in a BIG way --- I presented in the ER looking 8 1/2 months pregnant! First, there was plural effusion in the lung lining -- drained 3 1/2 liters of fluid from that area. It had a small impact on the abdominal cavity. Turns out a group of rebel cells broke off and found the abdominal wall an excellent place to microburst into tiny (and I do mean tiny) but plentiful cancer cells that impeded the acities from allowing the draining of the normal abdominal fluid into the system thus retaining it. It is not common but not rare either - it happens. After only one treatment of Avastin/Abraxane, the fluid began to drain - I wore diapers and soak one completely 1/2 way home. Thankfully, I had to stop at the drug store for a new prescription and picked up more Depends (ask the clerk to pull one out) and soaked that one by the time I got home. Now I only looked 7 months pregnant. The second treatment seemed to complete the draining but had little to no effect on the cancer cells themselves so I am now on a regimen of Avastin every 14 days, Xgeva once a month for the bone mets, Aresep (hemoglobin builder) and Xeloda (the chemo pill) 7 days on and 7 days off.
The fluid is gone, no more swelling in the legs and my turmor markers continue to drop and my latest scan on Monday show a significant improvement from the scans of October.
You could have something totally different as this disease does warp and mutate to an individuals cancer which I believe makes a 'one for all cure' the impossible mission. Be sure to check with your onc but this may give you a starting point.
I wish you the best and please PM me how it goes - there are so many posts, it is so easy to miss things...
Hugs...LowRider54

I've noticed the same problem. No explanation for it. I'm on chemo - Navelbine - which hasn't done anything to make my stomach smaller. Scans showed nothing. I hate it, it's very uncomfortable when sitting in my recliner. I don't wear anything that binds my waist, too uncomfortable.

I had bloating, swelling, belching with the smallest bites of food. Had endoscopy on 1/26 and a CT scan on 2/1. Found out Thursday the CT scan was clear but I do have cancerous cells in the stomach lining that according to oncologist would never had shown on CT. I encourage any of you with bloating to get an endoscopy....had I not, my ONC said he would have had no way to detect. Will follow tumor markers now. Starting taxotere and xeloda next week.My markers went from being normal in October to over 200 in December. I just had a very small meal and I look 6 mo. pregnant and my stomach is so tight it hurts.

With my last recurrence, one of my dr's said my increase in girth was due to my cortisol levels rising. All the stress that I had been under lately due to cansur was making my levels rise, thereby making me look more and more pregnant each day. But I'm not sure how to lower cortisol or how to lessen girth.

Me too..about 5 to 6 months preg look. I am starting to obsess with it. Saw onc last week, asked if it was acites, also asked if there is such a thing as 'a little bit of acites' (as in no such thing as a little bit pregnant)..he didnt answer the question
, but examined me and said no acites...'so its just fat then?'..but yes, im worried too, it is tight, and bigger by end of day. there is a good 2 inches of fat that i can grab, but its the tightness, the bloating and discomfort, that are worrying me....
I have next scans booked for april...but i am (obsessively) trying to reduce it with no luck..
what is an endoscopy like?...and what have oncs said re stomach lining mets? would treatment etc be the same?
anyway christina, sorry to hear you have this problem, but comforting to know there are others too. I havent had chemo, maybe its just this 'false' post menopausal state that has occured so quickly with hormonal treatment, and this is a middle aged spread thing im experiencing.?

Massaging the tummy could help. I did this for a friend daily in the hospital with her onc's approval. It relieved the discomfort and bloating. I read about the technique in a cancer care magazine at the doctor's office. First massage big circles clockwise, then little circles at 1,2,3 etc o'clock until 12. This is a rough description. Will try to find a video or better description.
-
heidi, what is the massage to accomplish? i.e. cancer care magazine?..what can cause the bloating? what a lovely, lovely friend you are to do that
-
Er, the massage has worked when the bloating is gone, vanishing into the air ;-) The magazine article (in German) talked about the massage relieving constipation and preventing blockages. But it works very well for bloating too. I did it to myself during chemo (and still do every once in a while) at night before sleeping. Ask your oncs because it may not be suitable for ascites or abdominal mets.
-
Hmmm... Wonder if that is why my kitty (called him Nurse Stanley) would "massage" my belly for hours on chemo days and for several days after.
-
Christinanz, from a veterinarian's perspective, the rule outs for abdominal distension like that is: fluid, fat, organ enlargement or tumor. So, I would definitely get it checked out and get another opinion perhaps from a GI doctor.
Good luck and please keep us posted.

Thank you all you kind people giving your comments and advice. What a great community! It can just be so frustrating having no solution. Lowrider your experience is really interesting as I'm sure I have cancer cells in my stomach lining too. Sounds likelukejessesmom too. And you both had endoscopys too detect the problem. Is that a camera procedure? I think there is so much other stuff going on with me that my oncologist isn't looking into all this right now. You the bigger priority right now is my brain. The disease has been found there and right now I'm having radiotherapy on my head. So all chemo is off the table. Just really hope and pray that this works so we could look at other options.
But I am trying massage myself and even have a lymph drainage person coming to try help. So good on you Heidihill for trying this too. I haven't had much success yet. So thank you for all your kind comments and help:) -
I'm so sorry to hear you have more to deal with. Sending prayers and positive thoughts.

I am new to the group. I was diagnosed with Stage 3B Invasive Ductal Carcinoma and had a double mastectomy since cancer had metastasized. I stumbled across the group when researching about Stomach Distension. I am having the very same problem. I look like I'm 3 months pregnant. The area is very tight and distended and highly uncomfortable. It's not something you can suck in either. I've been through 5 months pre surgery chemo, surgery and radiation. When they put in the expanders to start the reconstruction phase of treatment I quickly came down with a septic infection and was again hospitalized due to a near death experience. I had pus coming out all 4 of the drain tubes hanging off me.
I noticed the distended abdomen early on but it seems to be worse now. It is really uncomfortable! I also have a problem with lymphedema so I been treated with the machines in PT. Never have been able to get the right machine that would treat the trunk area, not just the arm. My PT lady would manually massage the area and it seemed to help some. Unfortunately you can only have so many PT sessions before you're cut off. I reached that point already.
I would love to find something to deal with this distended abdominal problem. Mine too is worse the later it gets in the day. I haven't found a solution but would love to hear one. At first I too thought the "middle age spread" thing but I ruled that out when the top of my stomach extended out further than my lower stomach. I hate looking pregnant as I'm way past those days.
Thanks for sharing your post. It lifted me up knowing I'm not alone.

I had ascites pretty bd and the only way they ever check for the fluid build up is an ultra sound. Mine has resolved a lot but I still get the tight abdomen feeling and found Gax X and Miralax have both helped. I think sometimes a little constipation can aggravate the feeling.

Hello. My stomach started swelling last Sunday, saw Dr Weds he said he thought it was digestive, but tms are up so he said it's fluid. I was in so much pain I was crying. This morning I had 4.5 liters drained and now I feel do much better. I am hoping it's not spread to stomach. Start we don't doxil Friday. Ask you Dr to see if you can get it drained if it's fluid.
-
So I had to get my stomach drained again 4 days after the first time and now it feels like I have to do it again my doctor hasn't said what he thinks it is I've no idea what's going on I'm completely and utterly miserable. I'm trying to find natural remedies to cure the bloating or to make myself go to the bathroom I've tried diuretics cucumbers green tea peppermint tea lemon watermelon juice nothing is working. Any ideas, please help!!

I would ask about a permanent shunt since you are needing drainage done so often. Take care.

Does anyone have spotting of blood from vagina when they are so fluid filled? I thought it was a spot here and there of feces and that maybe I was not wiping good enough, that was 8 days or so back and often since. And then today I realized it is a spot of blood here and there. I am long long time menopausal. I cough a lot and hard, I have some incontinence, well, a lot of incontinence due to the coughing excessively. So maybe that could do it too. But I am feeling afraid.
Back story, am sure enough I have ascites that I am approaching oncologist for the fluid to be drained this week asap. PET CT tomorrow which should help some.
