hormone suppresents

Options

Hi all,

I had a lumpectomy, came back with positive margins, I had a mastectomy on May 4th with reconstruction the same day. I went into the hospital with two breasts wanted to leave with two. My pathology report came back no cancer found in the removed breast tissue. I just completed 4 rounds of chemo because my doctor said a cancer cell could of escaped the mastectomy. Now they want me to do the 5 years of hormone blockers. I am so confused as what to do. My Doctor is pushing me towards the blockers. I wish I could find some non bias opinions.

Hi there. Finding non bias opinions about anti hormone therapy might be hard to get on this forum. You should probably look at actual scientific studies. It's a very personal decision. Please feel free to PM me if you want to talk more about the decisions I made. Good luck to all navigating this complicated disease....

    Hi kellyjeanne57,

Deciding to take anti-hormonals is a person decision that can only be made by each individual. I would suggest asking your doctor for an oncotype test and discuss results of reoccurrence both with and without anti-hormonal treatment. If you decide to take the drugs, please know that many women experience side effects and others do not. I personally couldn't tolerate Tamoxifen, but after shutting my ovaries down, I'm doing ok on Arimidex.

Breastcancer.org provides lots of great resources on pros/cons of this treatment too. Search the site! You'll find tons of good info.

    Best of luck.

    Hi Kelly,

I'm facing the same delima about taking hormone blockers or not?? I've gone through chemo, surgery last Dec, more chemo and radiation.. now I get herceptin every 3 weeks and struggling to get back to my original weight before all this... It's frustrating and now have been told weight loss with hormone therapy is very difficult 😑It's very difficult to decide I totally get what your saying!!

I just completed my first year of hormone blockers. I'm on the 5 year plan. <sigh> I get a Lupron injection once every 3 months and take Armidex every night. I was told to expect to gain weight. So far I am keeping it level, but it is super hard. My side effects are crazy insomnia, mild bone pain, and no mater what form of exercise I partake in I can't tone anything anywhere. I was told I'm lucky though because women usually gain weight like crazy.
