After kids after dcis

edited September 2017 in DCIS (Ductal Carcinoma In Situ)

it's going to be a year in nov after being told I have dcis and removing both breast. I ask my oncologist if I can start having my 3rd child she told me I shouldn't t have anymore because the cancer will come back.now worried I Will. Anyone got pregnant after and nothing happ?

    I haven’t, but that’s because I was already done with having kids (was 45 at diagnosis). The doctor saying the cancer “will come back” raises a red flag for me, as no one can know that for sure. Yes, pregnancy will probably create an estrogen surge but with a double mastectomy and presumably (from your post) pure DCIS, the odds of developing a new cancer should still be very, very, small.

    I would seek a second opinion as I do know there have been people, some on these boards (although I can’t remember which threads I saw it on - maybe do a search) that have had children after having invasive cancer, which would be even riskier than your situation.

    I haven't either, but I did not have any kids when I was diagnosed at 41. I was told if kid(s) were a part of my plan, mastectomy would be a better choice. I opted for lumpectomy though, since the DCIS appeared local and I wasn't in a relationship conducive to having kids.

    So I figured kids was no longer going to be an option for me. Then, after radiation was complete, my oncologist suggested that I consider freezing some eggs/embryos before going on Tamoxifen. That way, I can still have a baby in 3 years when risk of recurrence is lower and getting pregnant naturally would be impossible anyways. Not sure if you are talking IVF though.

    But, I have the same worry, and an additional worry about the hormones given to stimulate egg production. In the meantime, I am dealing with some fluid build-up in my irradiated breast that I believe is giving me some numbness and tingling in my arm, so back to the radiation doc.

    I've seen wonderful stories on this site about women having children after treatment. Your doctor does not know if the cancer will return, and this is your decision. I would get a second opinion!!! Best wishes.

    Linikjoo, I feel like I saw this exact same question on another forum from you. It is difficult when one poster posts the same question more than once as the responders don't have the chance to benefit from additional information that comes out from answers to responders, and it is difficult to keep both threads up to date, so anyone in the future following along on one of them, may not get the whole story (with it's conclusion). Just fyi. (I answered you on your other thread)
