I had some bloody discharge in march of 2015. Then in May I had surgery to remove a polyp in the milk duct...came back with A typical cells..so I was to have an mri and then ultrasound every 6 months rotating. My last mri showed enhancement...I followed up with ultrasound and it showed nothing. Then I had a mri biopsy and got my results today. I have stage 0 DCIS. I see my surgeon on Wed. To go over my options for surgery...Im a mom of 3. 1 year old...6 and 7...What are questions I should ask? Tips for after surgery? What one? Its all so much ...

    hi, vane89,

You are not alone. My friend (we met at clinic for BC treatment ) who just gets the dx result for her daughter who is 28yo, she has more aggressive tumor than yours but she is still fine. It's natural to be scared.

So sorry Vane. I thought I was young being diagnosed at 41. I'm assuming since you are so young you're being referred for genetic counseling? I'm waiting on my results to make decisions.

Stage 0 is so early!!! But yes..you are so young to be dealing with this.

Actually, even if you were Stage 4, there are so many more treatments and options these days than there were even 10 yrs ago. So many more people surviving and living normal lives with breast cancer.

    Hi Vane89,

Sorry to hear of in such a young age. I worry for my own daughter who is 20 now, what lies ahead. I was dx this year at 51. Even with my 3 kids being older, 22, 20 and 16 I worried about them. I choose a bilateral mastectomy and had implants at the same time with nipple sparing. No regrets. For me, recovery was not bad at all. I could move my arms pretty well right away and could dress myself etc the day I left hospital with minimal effort or pain. Everyone is different. You also have a lil one who is looking for hugs and being picked up etc., so that will be gentle hugs and no lifting for a while.(unfortunately). There are some great threads with what to expect after surgery, and I'd personally add to that, "may expect" because not everyone will have the same pain, if any, take pain meds or not, etc. I had drains in for 5 days. Found them annoying just to have around. If you know when your surgery will be, or at least the month, join the surgery group for that month. Meet others going through the same. Id say even read the past two surgery months threads and read their posts.

    Good luck!

Hi, vane89, sorry to hear the news, it's crazy early... I'm 42 and just been diagnosed in July... this resource is extremely helpful - I would encourage you to do your own research, ask for second opinions and decide for yourself, there are so many contradictions. I'm focused to keep my breast, doing tons of reading and research to take my informed decision. Don't let fear influence your decisions and education on the subject. Wishing you all the best of luck! Cancer is curable!

vane89...I'm so sorry you have to deal with this damn disease at such a young age. Just not fair! Just want to add that IMO where you get treated is one of the most important factors in fighting BC. May I please suggest a major university based teaching hospital? Good luck and please keep us posted.

Good Luck Vane. Its a crappy hand to be dealt but once you are on the other side of this I hope you will feel more peace with your decision. You are a young woman with a full life ahead. Look forward to raising those kids and seeing them grow.

Once you have your scheduled surgery date, join the Surgery forum group for that month. Meet others going through surgery at the same time.

    You'll do well I'm sure.

Vane89: I think your decision is a good call. Having been diagnosed so young means that you would have many years ahead of you to develop breast cancer and there is likely a gene involved being so young, and not necessarily the BRAC ones either. With the mastectomies, your chances go down to 1% for recurrence and since your Stage 0 means it hasn't gone anywhere, there won't be any distant recurrences either. Reconstruction is amazing these days.
