Still in shock!

I can't believe this is real! I had a routine mammogram on 8/9, called in for a repeat on 8/17 after an abnormal area was noted on the right side. U/S and biopsy done that day, call from my PCP on 8/21: IDC! Lumpectomy with sentinel node dissection done on 9/6. My biggest complaint has been pain at the axillary incision, way more uncomfortable than I had anticipated! I figured this is the worst of it as my surgeon was so convinced that my tumor was small and nodes would be negative. I have only been thinking about getting radiation started and putting this all behind me! My surgeon called two nights ago. She said the margins are clear..... but 3 out of 6 nodes are positive! NO NO this CANNOT be real! My tumor was only1.2 cm! Meeting on 9/25 with team to discuss plan. Now I'm looking at a full course of chemo! I am devastated and having a hard time processing this....

So very sorry! It is such a shock, I know. I remember feeling like I was stuck in a bad dream - that this could not be me and my life.

Do you have the specifics on the cancer? If you post them it sometimes makes it easier to offer any insight. You just make them public in your profile.

I hope your team meetings go well and give you solid hope for the plan ahead. I'm a big proponent of second opinions as well. It eases my mind to hear from more than one doctor.

    Keep us posted.

I'm so sorry. What a shock! Considering this was a routine mammogram and there is already lymph node involvement to three nodes ---how is this even possible? Someone dropped the ball BIG TIME! How could the cancer have been missed in prior years? I would get copies of prior year mammograms and get a different radiologist to go over the images.

I'm sure it was a shock to the docs too. My BS was sure I didn't have node involvement either but turned out I had a micromet in my SN. He said they must have dissected and re-dissected to even find it. Regardless it was there. He said it would get me chemo. Not his call. MO ordered the Oncotype test for me. Came back with low score. Dodged chemo. Rads only. Hope the same for you.

I'm so sorry to hear this. I was just diagnosed Monday and understand your plan to get this done and over with. How scary to have news that contradicts your plan. I hope you feel better after talking to your doctor.

So sorry. It's always a waiting game until every single result is back in. Hope after you meet with the Oncologist that you will feel back in control once you know what lies ahead.

Thank you for your reply Bosombuddy101, but I'm not sure if that would be helpful right now, as I just want to move forward and find out my best treatment options. I don't know if anyone "dropped the ball". My tumor was small. It was not there on my previous mammogram. Who knows how fast these things pop up and spread? These things happen, clearly it has happened to me. I need to put all my energy into the future, not the past. I will be looking to this forum for moral support, thank you all

Sending Hugs to you. I too have IDC left side. Just had my lumpectomy with SN removed on 1/15/18. Was told after surgery my initial margins are clear but I still don't have final report and waiting on post op appointment. I'm so sorry your dealing with this, I too am worried about next steps and whats going to hit me. How did this turn out for you going forward? I apologize, I'm new to this site and don't always follow the updates correctly but i'm sending prayers and hugs to you and hope that you are doing well!

Hi Boston6, so sorry I did not see your comment until now! I periodically check this site to read how others are managing, but I have not really made any comments or posts. I finished dose dense AC/Taxol (4 doses of each) on Jan 11 and just started my whole breast radiation treatments last week. They will be every day for 33 treatments. Physically, I have made it through pretty well, all things considered. Emotionally it is still a roller coaster ride, I still have my very dark days. I went back to work after chemo, now will be working 4 days a week, as I am told radiation can cause fatigue and I am driving in to Boston every day which is taxing. Anyway, thanks for the hugs, sending them right back to you! Hope you are doing well and your margins were clear. Keep in touch!
