Port question
I didn't know where to post this. But my port is a pain in my butt. Well my chest lol but...
I got it Last Thursday and it feels like it moves around and pinches when I move. But I feel the pinch in away from the port. Like I'll touch where it's hurting and it's next to it. I had to have it put on the right side and I'm having issues with much reaching, pulling or lifting. Also when I get up from laying down. Really anything that uses those chest muscles makes it feel like pinching and stinging.
Just curious is this was normal and if I would get used it it eventually? I do stop myself from reaching further etc when it starts to pinch. Maybe I should just keep moving through that?
My neck incision has healed but the one above the port itself is still there.
Was just curious of others experiences as I've never had one of these before. I know it's only been a little over a week. Hoping it's just cause it's still healing and it won't always Be so annoying

Hi Mojo,
I had my port inserted about 6 weeks ago. I know it is there, I feel it if I move my chest muscles or my arm alot. I really don't have pain anymore, but it is uncomfortable sometimes. I am looking forward to getting it removed next July, but I can deal with it until then, it does get easier with time as it heals. I hope yours heals up and you don't have any issues.

The one thing I forgot to ask (well. Not the one thing cause I've forgotten to ask a lot!) but when do they usually take them out?
I've got an estimated 6 mo of chemo and targeted (I'll find out what and when Wednesday
Then mastectomy (I haven't met with plastic so I don't know when for reconstruction)
The n I have chest wall radiation but not sure how long for that either. I see ro tomorrow.
Do they take it out during surgery?
I'm glad to hear it won't always pinch! Thank you for reposnding

I would think with her2+ you will have it for a year because one usually gets a total of 17 herceptin treatments. It should very soon get to where it doesn't bother you. I check mine for redness morning and might when I brush my teeth....other than that I never feel or notice it. I hope that yours feels that good when it is healed. If not,ask to have it checked. No reason to get pinched by it for a year. I've had mine for 3 years now.Good luck with your treatments and plan.

I found my port to be irritating for weeks. I had to be careful with movement and it felt like it was pulling. It has been 3 months now, and it still bothers me sometimes when I sleep on that side. But, oh, am I grateful to have it.
My surgeon told me it would come out when chemo was done. I thought I would keep it until after reconstruction, if they will use it during surgery.

Ugh, my port is driving me crazy too. It's just right there where nothing should be. I drive holding my seat belt away from it. I jog with my hand holding it so it doesn't move. I hold my arms a certain way when laying on my side so it doesn't feel sore. It's only been a week though and it was nice not to have to get an IV for chemo so I'll try to be patient with it.
Mine will stay in for a year because of herceptin.
I can't say for sure yet, but I think the scar on my neck where they slid it in feels like it's going to be thick. I don't want to massage it yet though since it's still pretty fresh. Luckily it's a small scar, but still. Also, because I've been tryingto avoid anything rubbing against the port, I've got sore shoulders and neck. I'm a mess.

My port has never been painful. For a few days it was tender but not painful. My Surgeon gave me Oxy and told Hubby to be sure I didn't hurt. So when we got home, Hubby insisted I had to take an Oxy. Then after I was sleeping good that night he woke me up to take another one - not needed so I didn't. Surgeon did impress upon Hubby that I was to do no 'heavy lifting/work for 2 weeks (he knew we had horses) so I got out of all barn chores for 2 weeks. I was riding a couple of days after port implant though and giving lessons as usual. I had 1 incision where the port was implanted - no other incision/none in neck.
I had my first DD A/C the morning after port implant.
How long to keep a port in is a personal issue. Some want them out quickly, I have chosen to keep mine in for 8 hrs getting it flushed every 8 weeks. To me (and my PA agrees with me) why take it out? It's there and IF in the future it might be needed - it's already there and ready to use. (It is my 'Lil' Soldier standing guard to keep the Nasty Cancer Monster from trying to attack but IF the NCM did try to attack, it is already there with rifle at ready to fight the Monster again. Childish - but how I visualize it.). IF I should ever need a port again and I had had it removed, a new port would have to be in a less convient sight. Plus it would necessate another surgery to re-implant one. So my port is going to stay where it is. Just get it flushed.
There are some who have problems with blood draws that keep their port for a 'time' for blood draws to keep from having problems with 'stick problems'. I don't (unless a blood draw happens to be on a flush day) as I have great veins in non- surgery side so not an issue for me.
There is no 'One Size Fits All'!

kicks, hey! That info could give me another few days off of feeding! Hah I had my husband do it for a week and started a couple days ago. But I am down to only one horse and I just leave the stalls closed and the barn open (we have a gate across the middle. It's a wide super old dairy barn) so all I have to do is feed and water. She goes outside to go to the bathroom liken the neatnik she is lol so my barn chores are very light this time of year.
I have a bulbous scar on the neck too! I just feel like maybe the pocket was a little big or it's just in a location that every move of that arm pushes on it. I'm just sore when that area moves. I also like to keep the seatbelt off of it. It's super tender. It's not that I'm in agony it's just it is uncomfortable.
I can't imagine riding right now. It would drive me insane! 😂 I would need a smoother horse! Mine doesn't need have a jog 😂
-
brightness, how are you feeling?
-
I feel the same way about keeping my port in. I have a hate/love relationship with it.
It was tender for months after I had it inserted but I am happy to have it so I can swim amd shower with it.
-
My port is in my upper left arm. My surgeon said it's better placement for it. I have to agree. The nurses at the infusion center said if it's in the chest, accessing the port tends to be more painful. My MO says I can take it out after last chemo treatment. I want it gone asap, no reminders and back to my life! I feel if you leave it in you're just waiting for the cancer to return. I'm thinking positive and besides if I need it again it only takes a few hours to get in put back in. But everyone is different!

Hi Mojo,
It does get better. I've had my surgery about 3 weeks ago now and it was a pain in the beginning as well. My incision on my neck is still healing and the incision over the port is finally starting to heal. For a while it might be easier for you to sleep on opposite side of the port, but once it starts healing, you'll know its there but you'll be more comfortable. Hang in there.

I had my port 3 days ago, only one incision under my collar bone.
Any one else feel bruised on the “inside"? Like, if I take a deep breath it aches like I had a terrible cough for a week and those inside muscles are sore. My right chest is sore, my right arm/shoulder is a little sore, I feel like my whole right chest should be bruised but it isn't. Is this normal? Should I call?
I didn't ask enough questions pre-op. I had surgery first, so when they talked about port placement I was thinking “well it cant be nearly as bad as the 8.5hr mastectomy so I'm sure I'll be fine" oops
-
I just had my port placed Friday and I am pretty sore and bruised probably 3 inches by 2 inches. I can't dare sleep or lay on that side. Of course, it's the side I sleep on usually. I took oxy 3 times but today just trying Tylenol.
Sorry your hurting so much wonder woman. I have 2 incisions neck and where the port is. So maybe that's the difference
-
Wonderwoman,
Do you feel short of breath? Or winded when you climb the stairs? One potentially dangerous condition that can develop out of port placement is pulmonary embolism.
You could call the surgeon's office and leave a message for whoever is on call. He/she could call you and you could describe your symptoms and how you feel, just to be sure.
-
Call your surgeon's office, if for no other reason than for your peace of mind. My port never stopped hurting, but an x-ray showed that it was properly placed and not fractured. The day I had that thing out was a joyous, joyous day.
-
Elaine and Ksusan- today is better but still sore, no shortness or breath or swelling or new bruising, Ive called my surgeons office, they said they would get back to me in an hour or so to talk symptoms, they did mention US or CXR to verify placement and peice of mind.
-
Thanks for the update, and hoping it's just post-surgical soreness!

I'm a little depressed after reading this thread. I just got my port on Tuesday, and came here hoping people would say the pain goes away in a week or so. That doesn't seem to be the case though.
I had a chemo appointment yesterday, so my port was accessed for the first time. The pain was unbelievable.
-
Lissa, many people do not have pain with their port so don't give up hope. Mine hurt for a day or so but much improved after that. Ibuprofen helped if you can take that. Ask you MO for Emla cream (lidocaine cream) to put on your port about 45 min before your infusion. It really works well to numb the area. You just put it on the skin over the port and cover it with Saran Wrap until they need to access the port. -
Don't get too discouraged - it's still very soon after your port surgery. I was surprised by how much mine hurt for the first 3 days or so. And all this time later, it's still uncomfortable if it's bumped or rubbed against. But mostly I forget about it now.
I used to just do the numbing spray when it was accessed. Now I put a big glob of Emla on it and lightly cover that with plastic wrap about an hour before my infusion time. And I still have them spray as well! I'm all about minimal pain at this point.
