Serious Acne On Head and Face
Since starting chemo (TCH) I have been getting a mass of acne on my face and all over my bald head about 1 week after the infusion whoch lasts for about 1 week. The acne is horrible, literally covering about 80% of my head and 10% of my face. It comes to a head within hours of forming. I talked to my oncologist about this and he said it is probably the steroids, but he was not interested in reducing the amount of steroid that I'm taking. Has anyone else had acne to this extent? Have you found anything that helps? My head is so sore and tender from all the acne I can't even wear my wig!
Any help would be much appreciated!

I'm not sure if this is related, but I did develop Rosacea [google it for photos] and saw my regular GP for it. The Rosacea medicine helped alot. I also read that while we have a high acid stomach we can break out like this, which makes snese too. Try a high alkaline diet, it really helped me.
Other than that, please don't let it go, and BTW I did reduce my steroids a little. Got tired of my heart racing. And on the Rosecea info page, they said steroids will make Rosecea worse. So have a good look and then see a doc. Mine is gone now. [I had more on my face rather than the head. Whatever it takes to get rid of the bacteria. I cleansed it with Neutrogena non fragrant soap, then calamine lotion and a dab of Jojoba oil. Working well.

I'm on weekly taxol and get terrible acne on my face and neck. They gave me a topical acne medicine (benzo something) and it helps alot. Never get it on my bald head though. The nurse even said there's a saying (she doesn't know if its fact) but the worse the acne, the better results of the chemo. I hang on to that saying!
Hugs.

I have only had one treatment of FEC but yes...about one week post treatment, I had really sore acne all over my head but not too bad on my face (mostly my forehead). As I still had my hair at least is wasn't visible but it sure was sore. It started to clear up about a week later and now that my hair is gone, you kind see that it was all over my head...lovely!
My first treatment gave me that sore acne, totally wiped out my WBC's and platelets and now because of my blood counts tx#2 is delayed.....somebody told me that it's all good...the chemo is working super good on me because I am so sensitive to it lol. I'll stick with that

Just saw my oncologist yesterday and complained of the same thing.
I already had rosacea but had now really had any bad break outs since 2003. The bumps on my head were taken care of with an antibiotic my secondary oncologist had given me.
My oncologist at MDA said that Taxol does cause acne as does the steroid. She is recommending that we lower the dose of steroid or even stop it all together as I have not had any reaction so far to the taxol. She also prescribed Clindamycin Phosphate Lotion (1%) and Finacea which I have used in the past to treat rosacea. I just started using it last night so I will let you know how it works. My face was BAD!! Acne, red, rash-like, dry, and painful. I told her I can handle being bald but this acne SUCKS!!!!! She also recommended a gentle face lotion such as Aveeno or Neutrogena. But to use one specifically for the face, not body lotion. Like I said, I will let you know soon how it is working.
I hope you find relief soon!!

I have used Cetaphil to wash my face for over 30 years. I used to have very bad acne. Took acutaine 3 times! As of this past April I was diagnosed with Rocacea and have been using Metrogel perscribed by my doctor. So far I've been lucky with no acne.
But I highly recommend Cetaphil. I even use the Walgreens brand (if in they USA) and it works just as well. -
I am on Tykerb and it causes acne on the face and scalp for me at times. I use Clindamycin antibiotic gel on the face and helps keep it under control. My oncologist told me to buy some Head and Shoulders shampoo but not the regular kind. It is the kind in the blue bottle and has as an ingredient, selenium sulfide. It really helped me. It cleared up the acne on the scalp and helped greatly with the itching. Maybe an option for you to try. Good luck.

I got this too after treatment one. My onc. said it was folliculitis (plugged up hair follicles). He recommended Doxacycline to clear it up. I am going to ask for a prescription before my next tx on the 18th!

I got this after my first tx of TCH. It was awful. I also was recommended to use Cetaphil and it REALLY helped a lot. I had been scrubbing so hard, i think it made things worse. The Cetaphil is very gentle and I patted my skin dry and it seemed to heal pretty quickly.
I did call the onc and insist on an RX (that I had read about on here), but by the time I got it, the problem was starting to recede. On subsequent tx, I had just a few minor spots and then eventually none at all.
I never figured out if it was the T, the H or the steroids. Doc seemed totally unconcerned. (Why am I not surprised?)
Good luck - I hope it clears quickly.

Thanks so much everyone for your advice. This treatment, my Oncologist reduced my steroids and put me on some antibiotics - seems to be doing the trick. I still have "boils" but the smaller acne has subsided. I'm only a week out from my 3rd treatment so we'll see what it looks like in a couple of days!

I am on Tykerb, too, and have been having nasty pimples myself on my face and sculp that I did not have since I was a teenager. I stopped using all commercial products with chemicals with it. I found a baby product that contains no harsh chemicals and use it to wash my body and my hair (whatever I have left during chemo) and so far no irritation on the skin. It is called Eco Store Baby Wash and the moisturizer is great too. Here is the link http://www.ecostoreusa.com/babybodywash.aspx
Also, my doctor thinks that although they look like pimples, they are not, but it is a rash and she decided to treat it as such with hydrocortisone 1% cream that also did the magic so far.

I quit steroids and anti-histamines after my third taxol and I never looked back. My ONC took some persuading-but I stood my ground as I had had no sign of allergic reactions to the drug.
-
It happened to me, but only after the first infusion of TCH, and I am now ten days out from my third. My onc did not change my steroids or anything.
Hope yours gets better. It's no fun!
