Biopsy 3 sites today...don't want to hear anything bad on Monday

edited September 2017 in Waiting for Test Results

I had ultrasound guided core needle biopsy on 3 sites in my left breast today, as a follow-up to my ultrasound 2 weeks ago. The results of that were somewhat disagreed on between the radiologist and the breast specialist, and neither seems overly concerned, but there were new findings from the previous US 5 months ago and at least one was described as a lobular complex cystic mass. So ultimately we agreed to biopsy the 3 "new" things to hopefully verify they are complex cysts and not something more scary.

The biopsy went ok. Three sites was a lot to have done at one time and they kept saying I was being a trooper. The 2nd one was the most uncomfortable, I think due to the angle/location but still not more than the sting of the lidocaine and the pressure of the biopsy needle (that thing is a big machine by the way). Now I'm having a bit more pain than I expected and wish I could take more tylenol (or something better) but it's not time yet. Icing on and off as directed with their ice packs. Not sure why but I have a bit of redness on my stomach also, which looks like a mild heat rash. All I can think is the ultrasound tech's arm laid across there, maybe that irritated a bit. It's getting better and not worse so I'm not concerned.

I'm also waiting for genetic testing results due to the high rates of cancer in my family, although not breast cancer. And unrelated, I had a cardiac event monitor due to low heart rate that I'm waiting for those results. I expect all of this will probably turn out okay but it is kind of accumulating on me at the moment.

This Monday marks 3 years since I lost my younger sister to an aggressive cancer (sarcoma). When they told me today that biopsy results MIGHT be in by this friday but more likely Monday, I kind of froze. I really hope I hear Friday because I have a hard enough time living through that date without having to wait for news, let alone the possibility of bad news.

Thanks for giving me a space to wait and worry. Hugs to everyone else waiting too.

I love your screen name too. It's my fav cracker - haha.

So sorry about your sister. I have lost 2 brothers and it never gets any easier ESP when the anniversaries of their deaths roll around.

We are all praying you have good results. Keep the faith.

Thank you so much for your replies and encouragement - really helped to hear. I love triscuits too - I'm sure I was eating them when I picked my screen name. :)

So, I heard today! And the news was good. Voicemail from the nurse said "no cancer" and everything looked "pretty benign". I'm obsessing a little bit about that "pretty" benign qualifier and the fact that they still want to see me for a follow-up appointment we had already scheduled. But she repeated twice it was good news so I will take that and relax. I didn't get the message until after they closed (early) for the day, so I'll call back on Monday and hopefully also get the report then and have the full details.

I talked to the nurse navigator yesterday and found out that the "pretty benign" comment referred to the fact that all the samples contained papillomas. I still haven't seen the report, she's sending it to me (the BS is out of town this week so apparently it can't be approved to post on my portal, but it can be mailed?).

Doing some research seems to indicate that multiple papillomas will probably require excision. I already had an appointment set up for Oct 9 so I'm sure we will discuss that then.

I'm wondering if I have extensive papillomas (or papillomatosis), how much will need to be excised and whether MRI would help figure out the extent. I have multiple "complex cysts" show up in both breasts. Are they all papillomas?
