Starting radiation September 2017

I start my 4 weeks of hypo fractionated radiotherapy tomorrow. I wonder about fatigue and possibly burns (although I am not fair skinned). Fatigue concerns me the most as my full time job is so wearing. I iwll start AI- letrozole once therapy is complete. 4 weeks is what I am told.
Have you had any blood work? I did not have chemo, but I had a partial mastectomy and sentinel node biopsy.
The simulation CT scan found a spot on my lungs so I had to have a lung CT scan and now am having followup testing with a thoracic oncologist.
I love my RO and respect the thoracic oncologist determination to draw conclusion on the findings and to stop my chronic 4 months cough. I will be meeting with a different MO soon after. I am proud of myself in asking for a change. I need a doctor who listens and responds to my questions, and unfortunately the MO I met twice did not.

Good for you for seeking a more compatible medical oncologist, Kaso! I've only had four radiation treatments and have battled severe fibromyalgia for many years so I'll leave it to others to provide input on the fatigue factor. I'm so sorry to hear about the cough and spot on your lung. I hope that the cough isn't cancer related (allergies, gastric reflux?) and the spot is a benign lesion.

Re burn - listen to how your body reacts. I am Asian w lots of freckles. I only have used Aloe gel and doing really good no issues.Since #26 (out of 30), I feel the area is getting lighter already. Key is letting the heat out of your body. No bra no top as much as possible really help. Some use aloe while others use green tea. Some like acquphor some like miaderm etc
Fatigue- I had short bursts of sleep coming over for the first four weeks. None of them lasted longer than a few min. Fifth week and on fatigue has been very strong. Very tired. Please take into consideration that I have had two drs appointments or test almost every weekday since rads started. I have made conscious effort to walk 2 miles every day. 2 mile usually takes me 35 to 40 min.
You will do fine and wish you only light pinkishness.

I started radiation on September 6th. 5 of 33 treatments complete. It seems that it takes them a long time to get me in position. This makes me the most anxious😟. I was told today that they will be taking an X-rays each time I have a treatment to ensure that my positioning is right. I spoke to my RO today regarding my concern for so many X-ray! I was told to not be concerned? Has anyone else experience this?
-
Kaso, I just finished day 6 of 15 hyperfractioned treatment. Doing really well. I've been working fine. I'm lucky the office is 5 minutes from work and only a 20 minute drive home though. Not really sure if it's the rads but did feel like taking a 30 minute nap today. I have my appointment late so i go home from the appt. Just a little pink. I believe you will find this easy go in in the beginning and hopefully over by the time we get into the routine. Hugs!

Had my interstitial catheter placement today - ended up with 20 catheters threaded through my breast. Planning CT was this afternoon and the first radiation treatment will be Thursday.
The placement wasn't bad, since the MD ordered pain meds, valium, and emla cream that I applied prior to arrival, and he used a ton of local. It was very weird though, and I'm glad it's over!
Looks like I'm the only one on here doing brachytherapy this month. Anyone else?
-
jeannemg, I have not had that experience. It takes them just a minute to line me up and measure. Just a couple of small scootching and done. Credit scans are once a week for monitoring.
-
That is supposed to be CT scan. Love spell check that s sticks something in on it's own.
-
jeannemg, I haven't started yet, but at my simulation last week that said I'd be x-rayed every day to make sure I'm positioned right

Hello everyone. I am having my dry run on September 15th and hope to start September 18th. Not looking forward to this, but it is what it is. Really helpful posts. I really wanted to avoid radiation since I have DCIS , but since it is grade 3 and didn't get clear margins I didn't think I had a choice. Good luck to all the other "September starters.
-
I finally have my start date! Sept 18th. I will have 3 weeks of proton radiation. Lets get this going! I will be using this film called Mepitel. It is supposed to protect your skin. Lets hope it works.
For those have started how are you doing?
-
Hi ladies! It's been a while since I have posted. I have completed 7 out of 30 treatments so far. Missed 3 (Fri, Mon & Tues) recently due to Hurricane Irma shutting everything down. Many places around here didn't have water or power for a few days. Everything is up and running now! They took xrays/pictures after day 5 for me. They say they do it every 5, 10 , 15, etc...day. Then I see the RO once a week. They told me just to use Aloe and then let it soak in and then Aquaphor over that (both twice a day). So far, I've had a little pain on my nipple area, but that comes and goes, I haven't seen any drastic color change in my skin yet, not even pinkish yet.
-
Great to hear there's little impact so far SuzyFl. Glad things are up and running for you again. Today is day 7 for me too. That marks me half way through the three week course. I have pink from top of the nipple and down plus some swelling but easily manageable. Doesn't have a burning feeling.
-
Hi ladies. I started radiation this week - 20 sessions total. My breast is really hot and itchy already after 4 sessions, but I am very fair skinned and can burn in the sun in 10 minutes. I think I need to try aloe gel. I have the aquafor, but I am not keen on it - it seems very greasy and hard to apply without dragging the skin.
I was told to stop my vitamin D (with calcium) suplements during radiation. The RO said if the ostepenia was severe to kerp on taking them, but I don’t want anything interfering with the efficacy of my treatment.
I am ready for this whole journey to be over! Sometimes I get a little overwhelmed by the whole cancer thing! Time to join a support group, I think.

Hi,
I've already had my first appt, and they just finished mapping out the tx. I will do a test run and 1st tx on the same day, Oct. 20. I'll have 20 treatments. Trying to finish tx by Oct. 13 as we're going on vacation... already planned before all of this! In order to do this they are willing to double up on 2 days. So, they are willing to give me 2 tx, 6 hours apart. I'll do this twice, probably on 2 Fridays. Has anyone heard of this or done this before?
Can't wait to get this over with!

purple- I only start on the 18th. But I heard about miaderm! 2x day after radiation! Also make sure you have nothing before radiation. Some creams have oils that literally "fry" your skin!
Hope you feel better
-
Hello all! I was supposed to start Sept 11th but something had changed in my lung volume so they had to redo the mapping. I had my first treatment yesterday. My breast has been achy and I am hoping this is normal. I was really tired going into this I think due to a whole pile of life stressors but I am hoping this will get better if I get some extra rest. So I am now done 2/16 + 4 boosts here in Canada. It will be nice to have the support of others going through this

Just had treatment 2 of 19- hypo fractionated radiation. Also met with the nurse today to discuss my care while being treated. (I had hoped this would have happened prior to the 2nd treatment. I loved being informed. I am receiving 2.67 beams each sessions for a total of 5.005. I was told that by week 2 or 2and 1/2 I can feel fatigue come on slowly and this will not decline until 1 onth after treatment ends. I was told my skin can become irritated and ther may be hair loss in the area as well. Eucerin skin care and dove soap were provided and will be replenished as needed. I am not to continue with the maderma I have used for scar healing. There is uncertainty regarding shaving, flu shot and dental xrays- that I must ask the RO when I see her on Monday. I visit with her post treastment every other week and the other week she conducts a sim to be sure all continues to be lined up properly.I was told to stay very hydrated and if necessary for comfort to wear a cammi and not a bra.

Had #8 of 28 treatments today. So far, so good. I have a few freckles now but no redness. Today I started experiencing these pinprick sensations, as if someone was sticking me from the inside. Not constantly, just quick, random pricks every once in a while. Not painful (I don't feel much since the mastectomy), but noticeable.
-
Finished #4 of 10 brachytherapy treatments today. Still have a couple of catheters that bleed a bit as they move, but no signs of infection so far.
-
SuzyFL, glad to hear that things are back to normal. I feel terrible for those who have been affected by Harvey and Irma.
I finished 5 of 15 treatments on Friday. Fridays are also my X-ray days. I've been using generous amounts of calendula lotion (found at Whole Foods) after every treatment in the dressing room, and then at night after I shower right before bed. I rinse off in the mornings before my appt to eliminate any residual oils that might burn. So far, so good--no pinkness at all. I do feel occasional twinges, but nothing terrible. I am positioned in the prone (laying on my stomach) position, which has been fine. I was a bit worried because the simulation took so long, and I felt cramped and numb. The actual rads sessions have been super fast. I am in and out of the hospital in 20 minutes, and fewer than 10 minutes of that are actually lying down on the table.
-
I don't think I was eligible for brachy since I'm triple negative. You're almost halfway done!

Kaso, sounds like you are getting a lot of really great information. How did things work out with the spot on your lung? I had some issues with my lung volume changing so it made me think of you and hope it all turned out fine.

Hi everyone, I started my rads on September 11th. I have had 4 treatments so far of tomotherapy. They do a ct scan daily, and 3 times so far, they needed to do 2 ct scans a day. I am worried about all the radiation from the ct cans as well as the rads. Each treatment has taken about an hour, most of the time is lining me up, and then getting it checked by a Dr, then repositioning and rescanning. I have very little side effects so far. A few twinges, and a bit sore but I am thinking it is my cording that is painful, I am dealing with PT 2 times a week to get rid of the cording and that is painful sometimes. This Friday's treatment was canceled because the machine was down, so I get a long weekend. I think they said it will extent my treatment at the end, so that means another weekend. I am staying here at the hospital for the 6 weeks of treatment and I was really looking forward to going home on the 20th of October, but now it will probably be the 23rd, and 3 more hotel nights. I read above that MelDent was able to get 2 treatments in one day 6 hours apart, I wonder if they can do this for me? I will ask, for sure. Good luck everyone, and I hope we all get through this with very little pain and suffering.
-
Carmstr835 - That's a long time to be away from home!. Sending hugs, and I hope you can get an extra treatment in so you can go home as originally scheduled.
-
I have gotten the first one done! only 14 more to go. The proton radiation took 40 minutes. My arms were killing me when it was over. But I can do this!
How is everyone else doing? What lotions are you using? How about deodorant? What type bra where you told to wear?
-
Congrats on finishing the first session!
I'm almost halfway done. Tomorrow will be my halfway mark. Doing well so far, but felt totally drained over the weekend. It's like I finally had the time to crash after the busy week, and my body was exhausted.
I'm using Boiron calendula lotion, which I keep at home, and a tube of Boiron calendula cream, which I keep in my purse. This was recommended to me by the rad onc nurses, and so far so good. They absorb easily, smell pleasant, are not too expensive, and found at my neighborhood Whole Foods. Also, the calendula does not stain or mark my clothing. I have not been using deodorant, but I shower twice a day with Dove bar soap. I figure the world can put up with me au naturel for a few weeks. I have been using cotton bralettes (no underwire) from The Gap online. They are smooth cotton with a little bit of spandex/elastic, and the medium size ones are supportive enough for me (34B, almost C). When I am at home, I go braless and wear fitted cotton ribbed tank tops. (I tried on Hanky Panky bralettes, which were very comfy and very pretty, but I was worried that the lace would be itchy if my skin became too sensitive.)
-
Today is my first session. I'm getting nervous. Is anybody exercising or working out during radiation? I'm a sweat hog when I work out and I'm worried that the sweat will irritate my skin.
I bought Miaderm and Aloe Vera. The therapist recommended Calendula... I will probably buy some soon. Thanks Bromeliad for the recommendation.
-
Just finished #7 of my interstitial brachytherapy. The catheters are really starting to bother me at the skin. Lind of a stinging/burning every time I move. And a few spots continue to bleed a little - just enough to make a mess.
Dying to take a shower!!
-
hi everyone!
Just got my 2/30 session! I can tell what are position X-rays what is real tx! It is quick all done in less than 10 min!
No pink yet but some twinges! I was told no underwire bras! Miaderm! 3-4xday. Definitely not before session, I was told to be clean before session.
Good luck to everyone!
