Architectural Distortion on Diagnostic mammogram

Hello all. I'm 43 and have always had very dense breast tissue. I got a call back on my screening mammogram and didn't think to much of it. The spot mammogram showed the same results, architectural distortion in the left breast. The radiologist then did an ultrasound and said everything looked normal. I have to have a biopsy on Tuesday. I'm terrified when looking at the predictive value of architectural distortion to BC. My only hope is that it's a good sign itwasn't seen on the us. I'm a wreck and can't stop googling. I have a young son and my mind is going to horrible places. Does anyone have any insight or personal experience with AD? Thank you

Benign things cause architectural distortion too. You should get and keep copies of all yout reports. Unless your report says Birads 5 you have an approximately 60-80% predictive value of it being benign.

    KimYR,

I had the same issue last Feb. AD that showed on mammogram, but not US. The fact that it wasn't seen on US drastically reduces the chance it is cancer. Mine was benign....hoping yours will be too. The waiting is HORRIBLE!

    Hi KimYR,

I just had a stereotactic biopsy done on Friday, they saw an architectural distortion on my mammogram. I was then recommended for an Ultrasound which showed multiple cysts that may have been causing the distortion, the radiologist thought it was a radial scar, which is benign, but she couldn't tell me 100% until I had a biopsy. I am now awaiting those results. It could just be a cyst. I am not going to tell you to relax, because it's impossible to do so until you know for sure it is a benign finding. Good luck!

I had AD on my first mammo back in June. Had the 2nd mammo and US, then the core needle biopsy. My results came back benign, but the radiologist wasn't comfortable with them, feeling that there was so much going on in my breast something could be hiding in there. ??? Waiting for my surgical biopsy next week (FINALLY!)

I've done the googling too, and alternately convince myself it's cancer, and that it's not.

Either way, it's better to get the tests and know for sure. Good luck tomorrow and keep us posted!

    1. I have the same issue. My screening mammogram and diagnostic mammogram showed architural distortio but my ultra sound was clear. . I showed my reports and films to breast surgeon who felt there was nothing there and I should repeat mammo and ultra sound in 6 mos. The radiologist wants a MRI but the surgeon disagreed. So who do so believe the surgeon or radiologist? Worried sick!

Nunu2017, I would push for the MRI for your own peace of mind. Architectural distortion is considered a "subtle" finding, so I would trust the radiologist's recommendation more than the surgeon's simply because reading images is the rad's specialty. If an MRI isn't going to happen (insurance, or whatever), maybe you could have another radiologist give his/her opinion. I read somewhere that AD has a PPV of 25-75%, so it's not something you want to brush off.  Good luck!

Thank you. After consulting with another radiologist I decided to have a stereotactic biopsy of my right breast for AD not MRI right now. I hope this is the right decision. I am very nervous and have periods of total panic. Any words of hope here for benign findings

Hi Kim, I'm the exact same boat right now and just had my biopsy on Friday. May I ask if you've had any further information about yourself and have you had a good outcome? (Btw, I'm writing this at 4:30 AM being unable to sleep due to worry)

Hello, they just found a radial scar on me, but patholoy report lists as "questionable" - where did you get the sense that a radial scar is 100% benign? If that were true, but that's not what several radiologists told me. :-

I had architectural distortion which only showed on the 3-D portion of my tomo scsnand it did not show an ultrasound or on several MRIs. Where is the few people in this form getting MRIs,… Did anyone have the distortion show up on an MRI?

I am in a similar situation. I have AD and multiple cysts next to a previously biopsied area. I go for a biopsy tomorrow but was told the area would need to be surgically removed which is the size of a small lemon. I was so stunned as to hearing that I need surgery that I forgot to ask why.
