Hello, sorry if this has been covered. My partner completed her 4 CT. She decided not to have radiotherapy. She is 35. Her OC has recommended HT. Being Tamoxifen. Her doctor suggested an IUD. So my question. Is using a contraceptive pill with her history and current HT an option? Prior to the CT she was using Cerazette contraceptive pill. Progesterone only pill.

She does not want more children and is not keen on having tubes tired. I guess I wondering what form of contraception various couples use. Thankyou

Her Drs are the ones to give answers pertinent to her and her DX and TX plan. There are no simple answers for all.

There are some younger ones who will probably have input on the subject but it was never a question for me as I was 19 yrs post natural menopause when my IBC developed.

If she's being recommended Tamoxifen, she probably had an ER+ tumor. In that case, no birth control pills--they include estrogen, and the Tamoxifen is intended to block estrogen. If the tumor was also PR+, this still argues against BCPs, which also include progesterone.

we use the mirena IUD. It does have an estrogen component but it's localized to the uterus primarily. My MO said to keep it even though my cancer was ER+ because that little bit of local estrogen in the uterus has been shown in studies to reduce the risk of uterine cancer which is a potential side effect of tamoxifen. The tiny amount of estrogen that makes it to the bloodstream is pretty much considered inconsequential and will be blocked from cellular uptake by the tamoxifen. A bonus with mirena is that many women stop having their period or it becomes super light with little to no monthly cramping :-) makes my DH very happy

Prudent medical oncologists will not recommend additional hormones taken with Tamoxifen.

Thankyou ladies for those replies. Very helpful. The reason I post questions for her, is that she is Thai and we live in Thailand. Some (most) Thai do not have the confidence to ask their doctors questions. Help that this site gives is important to many. My partner now is communicating with a young thai woman and talking about chemotherapy, the side effects, etc. That person is alone. I have seen first hand how people help each other. Indeed taught me the importance of communities like breastcancer.org. Thank you
