Would it matter to you who gave you biopsy results?
After finding a lump on the side of my right breast last month I went to my OB/GYN who Rx'ed a diagnostic mammo and ultrasound.
A couple of weeks ago I had the tests at a diagnostic center. The radiologist held me back after the initial mammo and ultrasound because she wanted to re-do the ultrasound herself. At that time she told me that I should "bite the bullet and face that you have cancer." She also was concerned about a cluster of calcifications in a different area of the same breast. She told me I'd have to come in for a biopsy on both areas. Needless to say I've been in a state of high anxiety since then.
I went in for the core biopsy today. I was surprised that only the lump was being biopsied. A different radiologist saw me. She said that the diagnostic report only indicated the large mass (5cm) to be biopsied. I don't know if the first radiologist changed her mind when writing up her final recommendation or if it was a mistake.
My OB/GYN's office is closed the day that the pathology report is due back. I asked for the report to be sent to my PCP, too.
I just want to know the results as soon as possible so I can catch my breath. The idea of going all weekend and then waiting another couple of days for my OB/GYN to get in to her office is too much for me.
Is there any reason why I SHOULD wait for her and not get the results from my PCP or another physician in her practice?
Thanks. I can't tell if my anxiety and impatience are getting the better or me or not.

I wouldn't wait to wait, I'd call and get results from the first person that would give them to me.

it wouldn't matter to me, however I would want to ask follow up questions on why the calcification area wasn't biopsied and see if that could be scheduled Especially if the lump is benign. The calcifications could be an indicator of something starting and several women have posted lately that DCIS was found "hiding" in the calcifications.

I had a similar experience trying to get my biopsy report. The breast center said it would be up to 7 days before I heard from them, so I waited until day 8 before calling. I was told that the person who gives patients their biopsy results had gone home sick and wouldn't be in for a few days. I asked who this person is, an attending or a fellow? was told the person who gives out the results is the SCHEDULER!
I had to insist to speak with a Dr.! a few minutes later, a fellow called and told me the results were in her hand, but she had to go over them with her attending before disclosing them to me! It was so distressing! I really thought the news had to be bad. So she called me back an hour later and said all 12 samples were benign!
I was of course, so relieved, but also found the whole experience to be done in such a way that only increased my anxiety. And this is coming from a renowned breast center.
Call your PCP and see if you can get your results ASAP. The waiting is torture.

Thank you all for your replies. You are reassuring.
I have to keep reminding myself that while my results may be a #1 priority to me, to the doctors, techs and labs I am one of MANY cases they are handling.

Does anyone know if you can get biopsy results off a patient portal? I am able to receive my mammogram and ultrasound reports and images this way.
-
No one in our family ever was able to get biopsy results from the portal. Agatha, get a copy of the original mammogram radiology report and look at the BIRADS score. Hopefully, it's on the portal. That will give you some info in the meantime.

The Radiologist who was reading my mammo and US as they were done, did the biopsies then. He called me the next morning at 8 with the path. report - as expected IBC. -
My PCP called me with results the day after biopsy which was good as I have known her for years and she is very sympathetic.

I can see mine in the portal under 'tests'. But it takes 4-5 business days for them to upload them and I've usually heard from the dr before then. It is nice to have access to them though because I can read through them and ask questions about what's in there. For instance I had a CT to diagnose bilateral blood clots in the lungs. The radiologist noted that there was a module on my liver. Had a PET scan that showed the module too and biopsy was needed. Biopsy comes back benign as a likely hemangioma. but the radiologist who performed it mentioned it was strange that it didn't bleed when he biopsied it and when he was locating it with ultrasound he said it was showing smaller than measurements given from CT & PET. Sent for diagnostic MRI if the liver and li and behold there are 2 spots and the MRI could pick up which one he biopsied and it was the wrong spot! MO just read throughout it and said it was all good. It wasn't til i pointed out the discrepancy in the report that he realized we were not 100% out of the woods. Thank heavens I had access to it and read it thoroughly

I am embarrassed to say I don't exactly understand what a patient portal is.
Do I set it up through the pathology lab my biopsy samples were sent to? The radiology center I went to for mammograms, ultrasound and biopsy doesn't seem to have a patient portal I can log in to (at least that I can find myself on-line after hours.)
just so overwhelmed with how much I don't know about the process no matter how much I've been trying to quickly educate myself.
Thank you again for your advice, everyone.

Agatha, no reason to be embarrassed. You'll usually set up a patient portal through your doctor's office. Or possibly a hospital/clinic or treatment center. Ask at the receptionist's desk. That's where I usually get them set-up.
Once you've established the "portal" you can check records your medical providers post to the portal. Some docs put everything up, others put very little. Some only put things you ask for. You'll have to see (and maybe ask for what you want).
Most portals also give you the ability to send messages (non-urgent, of course) to your medical providers and get replies that way. Some offices respond promptly, others can take a few days. You simply need to understand what you can expect from each portal you use.

Thank you again, everyone.
I just got myself a fax number and requested that the imaging center send me copies of all my reports.
The technician at the imaging center who receives the reports from outside lab said she'd call me to let me know she's forwarding the pathology report on to my doctors. My PCP has promised to get in touch with me as soon as she receives the report so I really hope I hear something today.
Thanks again for walking me through the process.
