Cancer location and the likelihood of lymph node involvement?

Is there any correlation between where the breast cancer is located in the breast and the likelihood in lymph nodes? Or is it unrelated?

Blessings,

Jamie

    jjAriz,

Cancer doesn't necessarily spread like a stain on a shirt. It can be spread through the bloodstream or lymph system. So, no, I wouldn't say those things are necessarily correlated.

There are lymph nodes all around the breast, so not really a correlation. A tumor could be anywhere in the breast and spread (or not spread) into the surrounding nodes. It has more to do with the cell proliferation and aggressiveness of the cancer, as well as the size. Not the location.

I have read several studies indicating that the quadrant is a factor in spread to lymph nodes. Outer quadrant tumors spread to the axilliary nodes and rarely the intramammary nodes. Inner quadrant tumors can sometimes spread to the intramammary nodes instead. These nodes are not usually sampled during surgery.
