Waiting times for surgery

I was diagnosed with ILC and scheduled for a lumpectomy on August 9 - but I had an MRI beforehand and they found another mass in the other breast. Now have to have a MRI-guided biopsy before surgery and my surgeon is away on vacation. I have a tentative surgery date for September 6. Is this a typical delay? I just want this thing out of me.

    Hi RedMoon,

. For me I had mammo/sono July 5th, a biopsy following week and had a mastectomy on 8/7. To me it seems like a bit of a wait, not that it is so time critical, but from the 9th to the following month to have a mri guided biopsy seems like a wait. Or is the rescheduled date for the lumpectomy..if so when is the biopsy? How long is your surgeon away for?

It wreaks havoc on our nerves all the waiting.

    hi beach2beach

Had biopsy today and lumpectomy is tentatively booked for September 6. I guess they want to know if they are dealing with one lump or two. My surgeon is away until August 28 and i see him September 1. I'm in Canadaand always hear that our wait times are longer than in U.S. (Not sure where you are).

My cancer sounds similar to yours - except no DCIS. Hope things go well for you

    Hi RedMoon,

I'm in the States. NY. Depending where you live in the States, wait times can be a bit long. Depends on the Dr's too I'd say.

    Please keep us updated.

The more posts I read the more I realize how much wait times vary. hopefully, doctors know what they are doing and know which cases can wait and which cannot. I am trying to be patient and not think about it, which is hard. Except I wake up in the wee hours and that's all that is on my mind. Hate not being in control of this

    hi Rayleen

Most of my wait was because they found something in the other breast and I had to wait for another biopsy. Am very grateful that the other mass was benign, so we are back to original plan. Think I scared myself into thinking my whole body was full of cancer (i am quite good at talking myself into worst case scenarios), so the lump I actually have feels much more manageable at this point.

So you have surgery on the 6th as well? Are you getting the dye injections to find sentinel nodes beforehand? Hope things go well!

Had mammogram, ultrasound and punch biopsy on April 6, met with surgeon 6 days later. He gave me a partial pathology report and explained my surgical options. Met with him a week later after deciding on lumpectomy, which I had on May 6. The next 2 months were spent getting various scans and dealing with some oral surgery issues. Started chemo on July 7. (My troublesome tooth was more of a hassle than everything else - I was so afraid I'd get an infection and mess up the schedule, but it finally settled down and I was able to proceed.)
