Im 39, recently diagnosed with ILC. Went for mastectomy a week before. Recieved my patholgy results today and shocked to see that the cancer was far bigger than the scans picked up (mammogram, ultrasound, MRI) with a positive lymph node. Now im schedule for another surgery for full axillary clearance in 2 weeks. Im really scared of the treatment ahead surgery, chemo, radiation!!!. Does the axillary clearance hurt the same as mastectomy ?

Welcome, Mimi78. We are very sorry about your diagnosis and all that you are going through. It often happens that ILC tumors turn out to be considerably larger than prior imaging studies indicate.

For the axillary node clearance, your Surgeon will probably use your mastectomy incision or an extension of it. It should not hurt the same as your mastectomy surgery has. There may be stinging sensations for a time, then just soreness that subsides gradually.

The axillary node clearance will put you at increased risk of developing Lymphedema in or around that arm.

Here is an article with links to information about reducing your lymphedema risk__

It takes several weeks for these free lymphedema risk alert bands to arrive by mail __
