PT and no PT
I was wondering how many people had physical therapy and how many didn't. And if they had it, for how long? I am most likely not going to have PT due to not being able to find one in my area that takes Medicaid and was wondering how important it is for full recovery. I have been doing exercises but still feel a little tight and was wondering if and when it will go away. My BMX was August 11th.

pepper......Your surgery is very recent tightness was also my biggest issue
I don't remember how long it took to recover but you will.
I didn't have PT......THEY SENT ONE home and showed me what to do....I was able to raise my arms very early on. I think she was OT not PT.....
If you think you need PT for some reason Clinics in hospitals take Medicaid an d yo can have it.
Just be little bit more patient..do not carry more than 5 lb..
Do you have numb areas on your chest ? I did and they never went away doesn't even bother me anymore.
Good luck to you.

Yes my whole breast area on both sides is numb and on my right side part of my underarm is numb. My right side seems to be more numb and also tighter.

My BMX was 8/8 and I'm starting PT next week. I've been doing exercises and my ROM is really good. I was not planning on going, but I have some fluid build up and some cording I need help with. If you don't need it, that's great.

I only had umx, but I had no PT. I had a friend who walked me through some exercises and they helped tremendously. I had numbness over the whole right side of my chest extending under my arm, but over the course of the next years, it actually went away. I have full feeling in the skin both on my foob and under my arm. But it took time. Good luck!

Thanks. It really helps to hear other peoples experiences so I know a little more what to expect.

I did no PT (with a PT) after my UMX as I had very little limitation with ROM immediately post surgery and just kept working on the little bit myself. I did develope LE (lymphedema) 9 weeks post UMX (3 weeks post surgery and 6 weeks into 12 weekly adjuvant Taxol) so I started seeing my LET (LymphEdema Therapist) who is an OT for the LE issues.
The area under my arm (axillary) is still 'numb' to the touch but the only time I notice is if I 'touch' the area (like when bathing/etc.), not at other times do I notice at all.
My suggestion would be to see an LET (LymphEdema Therapist) sooner rather than later to get a base line evaluation and education regarding LE from one who has the additional education. To be an LET, one has to be a PT or OT with addition education, not just someone (PT or OT) who says "I know all about LE".
Not trying to scare you but after any surgery (or traumatic injury) the potential for LE to develope is there. So it is best to gain knowledge from someone who does have the education regarding it and can give you input. Unfortunately, many DRs really have no knowledgeability of the realities of LE. I was fortunate that my Drs noticed before I did but that's not always/usually what happens.
Added: Remember we are each so unique and none of us can 'say' what is best for someone else or that anything 'will' (or 'will not') happen. We can only give our personal experiences.

Thank you!
