September 2017 Surgery Group
Well, after almost 2 months of tests and waiting, I finally am having this done! Lumpectomy scheduled for September 1st. My genetic test came back negative for BRCA, and my MRI and bone scan were normal as well....just this 2cm IDC. I am hoping I am making the right decision. I am still going to have to have radiation after, and a good possibility that chemo will be highly recommended, but I am hopeful that this will turn out good!

I am also having surgery September 1st, and I can't believe I am saying this- but I can't wait! I just finished 5 months of chemo and am looking forward to finding out how well it worked!
-
I'm scheduled for a BMX on September 1st, too. I have yet to meet with the BS or PS...that's on the 21st, so am not sure about recon or if they'll even do a BMX. My BS once suggested removing only the left breast & when I called to ask about the ps was told they had me down for NO recon! I want both removed and TE's...I'm pretty sure I'll have rads, too. I know that if I don't go 'all in' now I'll likely never do it...then I'll have regrets. Thing is, my husband is having major neck surgery August 28th...we'll be staying at our daughters as there's no way we can take care of each other. What a fiasco!
-
Joining in. Having final exchange surgery on 9/19 nearly 1-1/2 years after my initial mastectomy. I can't wait to have this all behind me.
-
I see my BS today. Hope to get a surgery plan and date. I will finish chemo Wednesday which means surgery in September, too
-
just saying Hi to my sisters. Chemo is the hardest part if you ask me.
Wish all of you speedy recovery!!

I was diagnosed at the end of June. A bunch of testing and scheduling later, they're going to do a mastectomy on the left and augmentation on the right because I'm too small to reconstruct to match my healthy right! Haha... super frustrated at how long this process has taken... diagnosed June 29th and surgery is scheduled for September 26th! Chemo to follow. Doesn't that all sound crazy?
-
ElleElleBee, the fact that any of us is going through this is crazy. Unfortunately, it's also all too common. But still crazy. Makes your head spin sometimes, doesn't it?
-
ElleElleBee- I would be super frustrated that it is taking so long. I am triple negative and everything was such a whirlwind- biopsy Feb 10th, results Feb 14th, many other mammograms, ultrasounds, an echocardiogram another biopsy, port placed and MRI and I started chemo March 3rd. One thing I have learned in this process is that you have to advocate for yourself- it's nice that most places have nurse navigators, but you are the driver. If you are concerned I would push for an earlier surgery- I got mine moved up 2 weeks because I thought 6 weeks was a long time to wait after chemo and my MO agreed so we made a few phone calls and bam, it was done!
-
Prior to being diagnosed, I had been rehearsing to be part of a play that we will be performing in September 22nd, 23rd, and 24th. After I met with the plastic surgeon August 4th, they said they would talk with my breast surgeon and schedule me "as soon as possible". So I figured I'd be able to get in within a couple weeks of that day at the latest and hopefully be able to be healed enough to be able to perform at the end of September. When they called me on August 8th to tell me that my surgery was scheduled for September 19th, I actually asked them to push the appointment one more week if possible. I figured if we've waited this long, I might as well wait one more week so I could perform in this play I've been working on so long. I've been very thankful to have the play as a distraction for me all this time and it would pretty much crush me if I wasn't able to perform.
I mean, given how cancer usually grows, by the time we figure out we have cancer, we've had it for years already at this point, right? What's one more week? Ha.
-
heard back from the BS this afternoon. My surgery is scheduled for Sept 11th.
-
Wishing you all the best with your treatments, surgeries and recovery. This is day six post-op for me and looking forward to getting better. Luckily I should not need chemo/radiation- still waiting on pathology. I can completely understand that this process feels like it's taking soooo long. I was diagnosed on June 9 after 6 months of having symptoms and the 2 month wait until surgery felt like years. But please use this time to get everything organized that you will need. Stock the freezer, stock the necessities around the house, have a game plan for your return. Make certain that whomever is helping you at home understands your limits. My husband has no household responsibilities on a normal day, but he has learned. My nurses were very clear with him that I will not be able to do my usual chores. I've limited myself to slow dishwashing (we have no dishwasher) and very small loads of laundry picked up one piece at a time. He has picked up everything else. You will also need someone to help with your incision care. My husband cleaned and re-bandaged around the tube and incision- using my arms for that long and trying to do this by myself just makes life harder. Take is easy when you get home. If you've never had surgery before, you will be surprised at how tired you get by the smallest exertion. If doctor tells you six weeks, plan on six weeks. Again, hoping you all have great recoveries!
-
Ready for September surgery too!! BMX on 9/5 set and scheduled! I am looking through older posts for insight on preparing for surgery. I remember reading about a certain vitamin, supplement or med to take prior to surgery that aids in recovery....anyone familiar with such?
Best wishes to everyone and your upcoming surgeries
-
Hello! I'm a September surgery, too. I just got my date last week. September 5th I will be having a double mastectomy with reconstruction. I just finished my chemo on August 4. I am so nervous and anxious to enter this next phase of treatment but at the same time excited.
-
MamaFelice:
I did research prior to my BMX on supplements to not only take -- but those to stop taking. BS, MO, etc., weren't terribly helpful there.
Try Arnica and Bromelain. Routinely recommended in Europe for surgery. I had almost no bruising and swelling. I also took a few others but have forgotten what. I'm joining this list, too, for 9/7 Exchange surgery, so I have to figure out what to take again.
Stop taking Omega 3, aspirin, anything that thins the blood. Also I believe Turmeric does this -- so I may stop that. I'm on Tamoxifen and have been told 2 weeks off, 3 after surgery, likely due to blood clot issues.
Good luck to all!!!
-
Hi, Eastcoast! So glad we're finally getting exchange dates!
Re: supplements - also increase your Vitamin C intake, as much as your tummy will allow.
-
It looks like I am joining this group too. I am scheduled for a lumpectomy on 9/7/17. I am meeting with my PS today because I have implants and want to develop a "plan" for radiation
-
I had a BMX on July 10 with tissue expanders. The right side was a prophylactic nipple-sparing mastectomy. I have to say the recovery was much easier than I thought it would be. I went back to work after four weeks but was feeling pretty good at three weeks. The worse part was the drains and just being so tired from the pain meds. I stopped taking them after a few days. Once the glue came off of the incisions, I was pleased with the way the scars looked. I start chemo tomorrow so on to the next thing. Just wanted to let you know that it wasn't too bad!
-
I have to say I agree with OCDAmy. I had my original BMX back in April of 2016 and the recovery isn't all that bad - as long as you don't have any post-op complications. I agree drains are of the devil. Hated them and hate that I'm going to have them again after the exchange on 9/19. Working on getting my big girl panties on about that.
-
ugh...it didnt occur to me that I would have drains again after the exchange! they aren't as bad as I had expected, but I sure don't want to have them again. I am 15 days out of bmx surgery and will hopefully be getting mine out next week
-
Pinkvictory:
I'm a newbie here too (relatively) -- but NOT everyone has drains at Exchange. In fact, I think it's in the vast minority for those who do. Mine is possible because I'm set to have a lot of pocket work. So I'm preparing myself although I may not have them, either.
Don't worry about Exchange. Most folks say it's so much easier than BMX. So much.
-
pinkvictory, I agree with Eastcoast - I'm pretty sure I'm in the minority of getting drains at exchange, but my PS is a sadist as far as drains are concerned. I had them for 7 weeks after my initial BMX and I think they only took them out because I pitched a hissy fit about them.
-
My surgery is scheduled for Sept 7th. After testing and more discussion it will be a lumpectomy. I already know that chemo and radiation will follow. It seems like forever but the surgery is only five weeks after diagnosis. I've had all the scans and the genetic test. So now we move foreword with pre-op. I haven't posted much but have been reading. I won't be visiting here again until after surgery in an effort to not be made any more anxious than I already am. Best wishes to the September group and a speedy recovery to everyone else.
-
I am also having a BMX on Sept. 1st. Though I'm only stage 1 and my tumor is very small, I made the decision for BMX because I am only 27 years old. I think I'm doing a pretty good job of staying positive with everything happening so quickly, how is everyone feeling?
-
I'm joining this group too. Surgery tentatively booked go September 6, although I have to meet with surgeon September 1 for final plan.
Good luck to everyone, especially those with dates as early as next Friday.
-
Hi Ladies, wanted to wish everyone a speedy recovery for their upcoming surgeries. Being diagnosed was awful and now I'm learning to navigate through it one day at a time. I am so thankful for this community. I have learned so much and appreciate all the ladies who have gone before me and offered up some great advice. My surgery is scheduled for Sept. 12, unilateral with recon using my own tissue. Praying that I won't need radiation or chemo.
-
Rayleen, I know the feeling, although my 3 month wait is probably a lot shorter than most have had to wait. Between all the appointments and waiting for test results, I will finally be having surgery tomorrow. I opted for the lumpectomy and praying this is a one shot deal....over and done with. Chemo and radiation will follow, but I just want this thing to be out of me. Good luck on your surgery and keep us all posted!
-
Good luck, Littlebee72.
-
Hi everyone,
I am having surgery September 8 and the "scout" procedure will be the 6th. I cannot wait to get it over with. Every day I wake up and my first thought is "I still have cancer." I really want to know if I will have chemo because my mammoprint came back "b" and my tumor is Grade 3. Not knowing is making me crazy.
-
Good luck to those facing surgery!
I'm 9/7 but Exchange to implants. I had BMX in late Feb. If you guys have any questions, there are a couple of us on here who've been through BMX and maybe lumpectomy, too. We could try to help you prepare.
Also, there are some GREAT lists on BC.org with ways to prepare for surgery. This was very beneficial for me. What to take to the hospital, what to do at home before, things to consider (yuck but good idea: stool softener, etc., etc.).
Hugs to all.
-
I'm a tad late but Good Luck to littlebee72, Sam0623, utjoy, and Flygirl12 who were all scheduled for surgeries today! Looking forward to updates as soon as you feel up to it.
