Wrong Bi-rad
So today I had my biopsy at the hospital and i was given a new bi-rad. Initially, at a mammogram clinic they assigned me a 4C. It's been a long terrible wait.... Both my husband and I came to term with the prospect of cancer. At my appointment today, they down graded me to a 4a and told me I didn't even have a lump. I did however have a cluster of microcalcifications and we proceed with the biopsy. Not sure if they are still pleomorphic and in 10 days I will know forsure. I am over the moon with my new stats but also a little angry that the first radiologist was so off. Anyone else have abi-rad change?

I didn't get so lucky, but a friend of mine did! They had her convinced it was the end of the world and turned out to be a cyst - She just had her mammo done on a lousy machine. In my case, it was lower grade and upgraded by the time I had my biopsy. I am on the Stage IIIC side of things. Be thankful that you're okay and be thankful that your radiologist was being overly concerned and conservative. Imagine how you would have felt if he hadn't been and it turned out to be something much worse.

I didn't get a BIRAD with mine

I currently have two radiologists who don't seem to agree. Had a MRI was apparently given a 5 (my dr actually called me when he got the results and told me I had breast cancer)and then went to a different radiologist for a location ultrasound and she had trouble seeing anything (I don't know if it's cause I'm super dense or if it's just bcause the masses are deep) but she said "I'd call this more like a 4" but I'm having biopsy with MRI next week.
So I'm not sure what led her to downgrade if she can't see anything. Or if that's why she did. I don't know how that works. Or if it's because I didn't tell her until after she said that that I had retraction, a dent, and spontaneous discharge (no color), if that plays a factor. Or if it's because the lump I am feeling is a cyst and the suspicious areas are not near that. So that would leave me without a palpable mass I guess. Unless you count the hardening under the dent. Haha I don't know. But I'm just gonna wait and see what the biopsy says. Cause I've been trying to figure it out and it's bugging me. Bottom line is they scheduled me for the first available hold slot for MRI guided biopsy and stents making me sit and wait long.
Maybe my surgeon appointment Thursday will have more info.

I had a bi rad 3 changed to a 4b just recently. The first was at a general radiology clinic and the latter at a breast oncology center. Biopsy is tomorrow. I'm praying the oncology center is just being extra cautious since they were a 2nd opinion.
The stress of waiting has taken a huge toll on me. I have GAD and it's been extremely difficult on me.

Hafdozen, I also suffer from GAD and the stress of it all is just too much. When I was given a 4c I convinced myself that it was most like to going to come back with bad news and prepared myself for it. Now that it's a 4a I'd like to say those thoughts when away but they didn't. I should find out the results any time now. They said 7-10 days. If I could reasure you on anything, if you have a stereotatic biopsy it looks scarier than it is. Really easy procedure. And 4b still has good odds . Best of luck

BIRAD's changed based on information. Your first doctor did not have the same information you have since recieved. I would not considered him "wrong". The thing with breast cancer is....its lots and lots and lots of peices of a puzzle. Until you have all the pieces you really do not know much at all....and anyday a new peice can pop up when you thought you had it all worked out.
Hoping for the best and watching for an update.

hoping and praying for a B9 result. The waiting is torture.
Forgive me for sounding ignorant, but what is the difference between a birad 4a and 4c? My radiologist just gave me a 4. No letter behind it. Insight?
-
Rrobin, some facilities use the letter designation and some do not. You can read about the implications of the BIRADS scoring system (both with and without the letters) here: http://breast-cancer.ca/bi-rads/
