Enlarged ovary and ovarian cysts

Has anyone had issues with tamoxifen causing ovarian cysts? I had a pelvic ultrasound last week because of some bladder issues and my results show that my left ovary is enlarged and there are multiple ovarian cysts, with the largest measuring 4.2 x 3.8 x 3.3cm. I am 44 and premenopausal and have been on tamoxifen for a little over a year. I have an appointment with a gynecologist set up for next week

    I believe that these cysts are caused by the tamox. I had them as well. (there is research that confirms this side effect.) The cysts can also cause high estrogen levels. Have you had your levels checked lately? Tamox was originally studied as a potential infertility drug (and also a birth control!) so it messes with the ovaries. My gyn monitored the cysts with ultrasound every 6 months. They eventually began to shrink and my estrogen levels went down (had they not, we were planning ooph or ovarian sup). Hoping for one more ultrasound and blood test to verify that I am post meno.

    jojo, thanks for your reply. I have not had my estrogen levels checked. I will ask the gyno about that this week

    I developed large, painful ovarian cysts while taking Tamoxifen. It is a known side-effect, and very common in premenopausal women.

    hi HuskerFan, I was on tamox for five years. During that time, I had a belly CT that confirmed a case of appendicitis and also caught a large cyst on left ovary. Had an emergency appendectomy that day and an ooph a month later. Easy recovery for both procedures. Never had any symptoms from the cyst so it was a total coincidence it was found. Am now post-menopausal so done with tamox. Been on anastrozole, the generic for Arimidex, for 2.5 years with 2.5 more to go. Best wishes!
