Time From Surgery to Radiation
Hi My Dears,
I hope today finds you doing well in your own journeys.
I woke up worried and I need your support and input.
I had my lumpectomy on April 27 and the BS said he got it all but of course as you guys know, radiation is the next step. The only problem is this step is taking SO long due to the authorization process and now I'm worried that here it is August 3 and I am still awaiting authorization.
Maybe it's due to the fact that I changed MO's since I had the surgery....maybe it's due to the fact that the authorization process just is slow as molasses...I don't know...all I know is that I just called the RO and told him of my worry and he said, "You MUST have radiation." I said, "Yes sir, I know this and I WANT it. I'm just worried that it's taking this long to begin and I hope it will still be beneficial." He said, "I'll look into it for you." I said I appreciated it and then we hung up. The man is very nice. I just hope he understood my concern.
Has anybody here waited this long from surgery to rads and it was OK? sigh...so many things to think about since my diagnosis. I'm so grateful to have you and this forum.

I didn't have to wait that long for rads after surgery. I had surgery on May 4th and started radiation on June 14th. I did have an issue with authorization for one of my MRI's in December 2016. I ended up calling my insurance carrier to get to the bottom of it. Turns out and incorrect DOB was put on the pre-authorization request and it was just sitting in limbo at the insurance carrier just waiting on someone there to take action. Luckily after the phone call to clear things up I was approved/authorized within 24 hours. Not sure where you a located or who your insurance carrier is, but you may want to give them a call if possible. I was able to ask them to expedite my request since I had already been waiting a few weeks.

I would call my insurance and ask them why it's taking so long. You have to check as well if the clinic is in network with your insurance. I had surgery in March but have to do chemo first in which I started in May. I only took 4 sessions of chemo and will have to rest for 4-6 weeks before starting radiation. So you should have started around June or July already. Just call your health insurance and ask them what's the delay.

Did your hospital assign you a nurse-navigator? If not, call their social worker pronto and explain that the delay in scheduling radiation is unacceptable, given that you’ve contacted your MO, RO and surgeon multiple times and that you should have gotten an answer from your insurance company. If your providers are out of network, you might have to pay a bit more but it should still be at a discount from the uninsured-patient “rack rate.” If that’s not possible, explain that time is of the essence, and no offense but you really need to start rads yesterday and could they please refer you to an in-network RO. And if your insurance company hasn’t said diddly-squat, call them and don’t hang up till you get a straight answer, an authorization number, and the auth. faxed or e-mailed. Keep going up their chain of command if you have to. “Let me speak to your supervisor” (notice I didn’t say “may I?”) can work wonders. (Go online and find out the names of their execs, too. Once, in dealing with a fraudulent car rental made in my name, I ended up dealing with the rental car company’s VP and General Counsel and not only cleared my name but got the perp successfully prosecuted).

Thank you, ladies, for your kind and very good advice. On Monday I am planning to call my health insurance company.

Hi Hippiegirl. I had my surgery April 22 and was going to start radiation in June but I decided to participate in a study being done by a very experienced and well known research/clinical radiation oncologist here in Canada. This extra testing confirmed for me that I did need radiation and I started August 9th. My doctors are not at all concerned about time (though under 3 months is ideal) so don't worry too much about this. I hope everything goes well for you.

Hi jessiebelle,
I'm sorry you have to go through this stuff and I wish YOU well, too, hon. Thank you VERY much for your comforting words about not having to worry about this wait. I went to my primary doctor yesterday and he's so mad about the fact that this authorization for rads is taking so long to go through to the correct place. I think the way it's looking, I'll be starting before this month is over so I'll be posting in the Starting Radiation August 2017 topic (hopefully). I'm so grateful for this forum and all of the support here.
