Lymphedema after fat grafting?

I had surgery 4 years ago (lumpectomy and axilla dissection- 34 lymph nodes removed- plus radiation) and I am now considering fat grafting to even out my breasts....and I fear triggering lymphedema (post axilla dissection I have not had this problem but I am wondering if anyone was in similar situation and had no problems from lymphedema after fat grafting). Any experiences appreciated!

hi. As this post is a little old I am not sure what you chose to do. Unfortunately I had fat grafting after my lumpectomy and only two nodes have been removed. I now have rampid lymphedema that appeared 2 months after the fat grafting. I have since then had breast infection, pain and I have to manage the lymphedema in my shoulder back and breast daily. I had chosen accelerated partial breast irradiation post lumpectomy and I had healed wonderfully. For me, deciding to do fat grafting was a bad decision. Also the process for the liposuction for the fat grafting is also horrible. If you have decided to do fat grafting, I wish you luck and hope everything works out well for you! Just sharing my story. Best of luck, Lynn

hi Loomisgal (Lynn) Thanks for posting and sorry to hear of your ongoing challenges with reconstruction. In the end I chose not to proceed with any fatgrafting reconstruction (the only option open to me because of the radiation). I was worried about all the other potential risks and side effects and decided to leave thing so as they are. I hope you are able to get some relief from your lymphedema and I wish you all the best
