nem126:  I would call myself a Christian although I do not believe in God.  To me being a Christian more or less means that you treat others with the same respect and kindness that you expect.

Bill Maher was on a CNN special program last night and is a well know atheist and very liberal. A funny part at the end of the show was that he would now love to have Romney in the White House and if Romney could make that happen Bill would become a Mormon!!! So funny. Guess even atheists now and again want some magic miracle to happen irrespective of political preferencesLoopy

magiclight - . Comes to something when Romney, who was seen to have a major fault because he kept 'binders of women'!, is back in fashion. Now all sorts of 'sins' seem to be forgiven in 45! Anything better than the current incumbent in my eyes!

KB8670 - thats so irritating when people take that stance. I am very happy with my and my family's moral compass without the need to believe in a 'God'.

    Saw this yesterday on FB.

I saw what looked like a live re-creation of Calvary on my way to Dallas yesterday. I couldn't tell if they were mannequins or the other kind of dummies. what the hell is wrong with people that they think they need to do this?

Compassion should be your first reaction?  So why do you care what others believe or do as a sign of those beliefs?

We better care what others believe because they sure as heck care about our lack of belief.  Most states still have laws on the books preventing atheists from holding public office. The laws are unconstitutional but many still believe in those laws.

I don't care what other people believe. I care that they think I need to be "saved" and try to push their religion on me,, and their religious view of social issues, (birth control, abortion) on the whole population,, no matter what they believe. Separation of church and state !!!!

Still seriously effed up to have that right on the highway. I can imagine children being traumatized for life seeing people crucified. Talk about it being pushed on you....

When I told my work group of my stage IV de novo diagnosis in November, several of them told me "I hope you're not mad but I'm praying for you". As a non-believer staunchly against organized religion I wouldn't be taking comfort in that, however, they "believe" and they care enough to do what they think might help me. I can't be mad at that. I did have one pushy co-worker though who wanted me to join him in a prayer for me. I told him that was never going to happen and that it would be totally dis-ingenious, why would you even want me to? As far as I know I am still in 5 prayer groups currently, lol.

Offering to dust and vacuum your house would probably be more of a help immediately after your surgery. Offers of prayers are usually made to make the one praying feel better.  I know this sound cynical.  I just would be more confident that the one praying was sincere if the offer of tangible help was included.

I solved the problem of people praying for me by not telling anyone about my diagnosis. I got away with it because I didn't need chemo and never lost my hair. It doesn't bother me that much if someone says they will pray for me because intentions are good, but the tendency to take credit for any positive outcome is a bit nauseating. They never take responsibility when their prayers fail.

I ran across a poem by E.E. Comings I found very beautiful.

[i carry your heart with me(i carry it in]

i carry your heart with me(i carry it in
my heart)i am never without it(anywhere
i go you go,my dear;and whatever is done
by only me is your doing,my darling)
     i fear
no fate(for you are my fate,my sweet)i want
no world(for beautiful you are my world,my true)
and it’s you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you
here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life;which grows
higher than soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart
i carry your heart(i carry it in my heart)

Missed National Day of reason on the first Thursday in May of every year. Looks like I forgot, but try to celebrate it everyday, nonetheless. Belated National day of reason.

    magiclight,

Thank you, and the same to you. There's precious little reason in this country these days so we have to appreciate it wherever we find it.

I so hate when people think "God is on their side." It is so useless to think that, when some of the most devout, prayerful, optimistic, kind-hearted people in the world have died prematurely from cancer or side effects of treatment. For example, my mother who died from complications following Whipple surgery for pancreatic cancer.

Well, my mom always used to say, "God takes His favorites home early." She died from soft tissue sarcoma at age 48.

    Not very comforting, I know.

Being Stage 4, I guess I'll be one of the favorites, too.

    Love it!!

For years here in Australia there have been various bills put up to allow euthanasia. Suddenly every damned politician is a "Christian", and it is against their beliefs. What the hell happened to separation of church and state. In last years census 30% of the population said they had no religion. So frustrating.

Freya, the really crappy thing here in California is they DID pass the death with dignity assisted suicide law a couple years ago, BUT they charge you $5,000 JUST TO GET THE PILLS!!!

I for one do not have 5K laying around to off myself. Even Med insurance here will charge you.

They get ya coming and going, no matter what.

It sucks. I just don't want to go without some say in the matter.

I'm so glad someone has already started this thread. I know how much people rely on their religions during difficult times, but I'm watching hurricane coverage on TV and the sight of people praising God for sending the rescuers their way makes me want to scream. For openers, why did God send this storm? And don't you thing the rescuers and the organizations behind them deserve some thanks, too? End of athiest rant.

Organised religion is like organised crime, it preys on peoples weakness, generates huge profits for its operators and is almost impossible to eradicate. Mike Hermann

We would probably have the cure for cancer by now if all the money donated to church's was given to medical research instead. I prefer to believe in science than religious crap that has killed more people than anything else in the worlds history.

Exactly and great quote! I have a very good friend who was raised on religion and goes to church every Sunday. When I told him about my diagnosis he admitted that even though he is s believer, he still thinks god is an asshole sometimes. I just laughed and appreciate that he can admit that to himself.

Mae, it does my head in that it is the 21st century and we still have groups of people wanting to kill each other over who's imaginary deity is the real one.

When will people realise that Jesus, if you believe, was not caucasion and/or blue eyed, he was from the middle east, and how the hell did he find men called Matthew, Mark, Luke and John in that part of the world.
