avastin and ascities
I am stage 4 breast cancer which moved to ovaries and lesson on spine and pelvis. I have been undergoing treatment this round since May 2015. I have tried Abraxane, Avastin, Xedola, now on Gemzar and Carbo combo. The Avastin is on the drug that cleared up the ascites. However, the insurance abruptly stopped paying for the Avastin. It was a blessing in disguise since I needed a gall bladder surgery and needed to be off Avastin for 6 weeks. After the surgery and healing dr put me on Xeloda since insurance still wouldn't pay. That lasted 3 months then fluid returned along with tumor deposits floating in the peritoneum. After the Xeloda stopped working he now has me on the Gemzar/Carbo which is crashes my platelet count. I have only had 2 treatments and each time platelet count drops extremely low. Marginal transfusion last time. Dr said Avastin isn't effective second time it is administered after a break. My question is has anyone had Avastin again after stopping it. Also is there another chemo drug to get rid of the ascites. I'm getting drained weekly. Last week there was blood in the fluid but tech and dr said he was from trauma of the procedure and the fluid amount was 6.2 liters. Very large amount. Plus the Gemzar Carbo combo gives me no appetite and really has messed with taste buds. I would appreciate any thoughts or if you have had this experience to let me know.

I have not personally had experience with those treatments but wanted to say that you have certainly been through an incredible amount the past two years! Glad to hear your gall bladder surgery went OK. The abdominal fluid collection/drainage procedure sounds quite dramatic. Did you appeal the insurance denial?
Perhaps the stage IV forum gals would be more likely to have some familiarity with Avastin to share with you

I don't know about Avastin, but you probably could get an indwelling catheter that would allow you to drain your ascites at home.

Hi Capinva, you might get really pertinent answers if you post in the Peritoneal Carcinamatosis thread under the stage 4 forum. Best of luck.

Thank you Ann. That is a big help. Didn't realize that thread existed.

Eribulin has been working to get rid of my ascites.
