Large Fibroadenoma... BIRADS 4

Hey all,

I am very much a hypochondriac and this whole experience has been extremely emotional for me.

I went in for my ultrasound on my lump, which I have had for awhile, and just ignored it. It hasn't changed size other than a little each month with my period. I have large breasts so I guess I just never noticed that it was on the larger side.

I had an ultrasound, and the doctor came in and told me I most likely have a Fibroadenoma, but he wants to biopsy it due to it's size (4cm) just to make sure it's not a Phyllodes which he said is unlikely. He said "It does not look like Breast Cancer."

But my ultrasound report rated me BIRADS 4, which had been FREAKING me out. It also says "probable fibroadenoma"

I am only 24, and I know the chances are low, but the BIRADS 4 has me sooo worried.

Anyone else been in a similar boat?

Thanks, and hugs!

Hi Mg. I have BIRADS 4 too....of course I'm not quite as young as you....lol....but my biopsy came back, even with the BIRADS 4. Like some crazy high percentage of them to...someone here has the right #....I think 80% or something...come back b9.

Get the biopsy as soon as you can and set your mind at ease :-)

mglouise, mommakat is right. BIRADS 4 has a 70-80% chance of being b9, so that is actually good news. The other good news for you is this:

Image result for breast cancer diagnosis by age

So notice that in the age group 20-29 (which is an age group representing a 15 year span) only has 0.3% of the total number of breast cancer cases. It doesn't mean it's impossible, just very statistically unlikely. Try not to dwell on worst case scenarios, but certainly follow up. "probable fibroadenoma" means that it is probably a fibroadenoma. Good luck!

    Hello Mglouise1,

We are definitely in the same exact boat, I am 25 and noticed a random lump around 5 inches below my collar bone, so relatively high. I had an ultra sound biopsy and post mammogram so a clip could be placed to monitor it. Basically fast forward 8 months later and its grown a centimeter(3.10) and my current doctor says that because of the rapid growth she believes it may be a phyllodes tumor. My other doctor told me it was just a Fibroadenoma but now i'm hearing things like the cells are very active and irregular and I wont know if it is a phyllodes or not until its removed and sent to pathology. And if it is i will need another surgery to remove breast tissue to make sure it doesn't reoccur. I'm new to all these new medical terms but I've had two ultra sounds and wondering what BIRADS 4 means and how do I find out what level I am? I wish you all the best and I am curious to know your results! ♡

Gabby, BIRADS is a scoring system. You can find out your score on your imaging report (you are entitled to a copy, and should keep them for your records, e.g. you might need them if you change imaging centers or move). Read more about the BIRADS system here: http://breast-cancer.ca/bi-rads/

I would take comfort in the fact that out of 2 radiologists, both believe you have a b9 finding. Hoping that pathology confirms that! Good luck
